Looks like a new indoor arena is closer than its ever been. Shouldn't be any NIMBY's as it only got a few big budget hotels next to it and the train tram stops just now. Fingers crossed

Really great news. Could do with it being maybe a couple of thousand bigger to compete with what the hydro gets but maybe it’s to give an alternative for acts that are kind of in between the corn exchange and then the hydro.

Was beginning to get a bit worried about this. Found out about this about a month or so ago through my wife's work and someone involved with it said it would be announced the next again week. As the weeks rolled on and nothing was announced we were beginning to wonder if the plug had been pulled already.
I would have liked to have seen it around the 10k/12k mark but 8.5k is better than nothing.
Even better is I live a 10 min walk from the site.

Would save people travelling through to Glasgow for a gig.

I’d rather it rival the Hydro but I suppose we have Murrayfield for the super gigs and this sits somewhere just below the Hydro.
Down at ocean terminal would’ve been amazing

8500 seats is still a significant venue that will still get bands in the same category the hydro gets. I’ve been to plenty gigs at the hydro where it’s not sold out and 8000 seats would have been more appropriate.
More important now is the quality of the venue, acoustics, staging etc. Get all that right and it will attract big acts.

I think one down at Ocean Terminal would be good but the transport links at Edinburgh Park are outstanding compared to Ocean Terminal.
Tram - You have two tram stops right at it (Edinburgh Park and Edinburgh Park Central) for getting people in from Leith, the City Centre and the west of the city.
Rail - You have Edinburgh Park Station right at it for folk coming from West Lothian, Falkirk, Glasgow and central Scotland. You have South Gyle station about a mile away for Fife, Dundee, Perth. Edinburgh Gateway station not far away and connected on the tram for similar services as South Gyle. Tram from St Andrew Sq from Waverley.
Road - The M8 is right at the arena pretty much too (though I'm assuming the Council won't allow a lot of parking). M9 linked into that end of the M8 or via the A8. Edit: parking wise you also have Ingliston Park and Ride on the tram route and Hermiston P&R is walkable to Edinburgh Park. Assume Hermiston Gait retail park parking will be restricted.
Air - The airport is obviously very handy. Maybe more of a thing for acts rather than punters

Most events at the Hydro aren’t anywhere close to the full capacity.

In that case, all for it! As mentioned later, transport links etc are better out there and I suppose ocean terminal is more residential so not as well suited to a big arena.
Edinburgh is def on yhe up!

Might help regenerate the Edinburgh Park area too. Soo many empty offices since Covid, and lots never came back
Might see a few more Hotels and restaurants pop up in the area too, meet the demand from concert visitors
Great news . Anyone got mock ups of the inside ?

Only pic I've seen. Quite like that layout looks like it goes further up on the left and not many on the sides

Sometimes I feel the Hydro is just too big and some bands struggle to sell out there, a good proper decent sized venue is just what's needed, all we have in Edinburgh is Murrayfield for the bigger gigs.

Looks a relatively intimate venue, which is great. Also looks to be a relatively small footprint for a reasonably sized venue
Will probably take some business away from the hydro, especially for bands/shows that won’t sell out there. I like the hydro as a venue, but access and getting away is a pain in the arse, the road system from there to the M8 isn’t great, and that stretch of the M8 seems to be in perma roadworks. This new venue should be easier to get in and out of with various options (hermiston gait roundabout lights not withstanding)

On the capacity "issue", does anyone know if the P&J Live in Aberdeen regularly sells out? Depending on configuration, that is actually bigger than the Hydro. I'm assuming not as I read that the Hydro was the second busiest arena in the world pre-covid behind MSG.

In general I hate going to music events in enormous metal sheds, but I recognise that some acts can only hope to meet demand by playing in such venues. So on balance, I'm pleased that Edinburgh is at long last to get a venue of this size. But I doubt I'll be a regular attendee.
Stairway 2 7

There's a number of things that will only go to a big venue, that Edinburgh Currently doesn't have
The darts will probably make a stop here, world championship boxing, there's an arena tour panto each year, Disney on ice does the arenas, the hydro has Andre Rieu most years, some bigger comedians only do arenas like Peter Kay.
I count 33 music acts at the hydro next year so far and 11 other events. Most aren't doing Edinburgh but are doing dozens of other UK venues.
Will be a good thing if it goes ahead, hopefully the council keep their hopeless fingers out

really hope they deliver on this, as it's something this city has lacked for a LONG time

I think that’s what my wife was told. Between the station/Premier Inn and where the Patina restaurant/bakery is

Yep right next to it. Can't see any objections neighbours are a Lloyd's office that the site owns, a Premier Inn, a vacant lot and then retail across the train tracks. It's the green space here in the middle next to the premier Inn

Will be a good use of the site, my work used to be next door to it and the plans had originally been lots of offices, cafes and bars, a doctor's surgery and sports facilities, once COVID hit and folk started working from home then progress ground to a halt with only one office and a car park built, obviously wasn't viable in the current world so repurposing it for something sorely needed is a great move

Extremely confusing location plan. Why do people draw maps with N at the bottom? Are they Australian?

Maybe why only 8.5k although there are bigger gap sites near it.

I thought it would be the space at the other side of the station, appears to be a bigger patch of land

100% agree with that, north should always be at the top. My former employer, pkc, did a map info board for the north inch which is utterly confusing, face the map and the river is on your left, look at the map and it's on the right!!!
Besides that, the location for the arena is east of the premier inn.

I'm guessing it will be in either of the red areas here, I know thats the land the original developers bought and wanted to develop and they are the only land about there big enough

My wife was definitely told it was the other side - "the waste land next to Patina" (also owned by the same folk). Wonder if that's why it wasn't announced when she was told. I walk past that bit of land fairly regularly. It is definitely compact, though weirdly we've said it in the past that a "smaller arena" would be good in that bit. Really can't see how you get a 8.5k arena, associated bars, backroom areas, docking bays at the back for lorries for staging and equipment and the like, etc. in that space.

Yes I am more than aware of that area also doesn't feel big enough to fit into that area. Intersteing to see what they do with road connections as quite a built up area

I've checked and it's pretty much the same size as the hydros building footprint 125m×125m hydro v 100mx150m roughly edin. Hydro has a lot more space around it though. Dimensions probably show why it looks more like a massive playhouse configuration than in the round

Underneath perhaps or probably a multistorey one in the spare land close. Although the application goes on about active travel so not sure if they want to many cars. Will need to be some as you say for a venue like that. Will find out more after the consultation on the 4th of Dec

I was speaking to a couple of my mates about the proposed new arena yesterday, one of them said that P&J Live has never been filled.

Would have liked it to be bigger but that looks fantastic. Great use of the space surely no objections from the usual squad and the council keep their distance not to spoil it. Can't see how it can be turned down at that site. The timeline also shows how Victorian our planning system is
