View Full Version : Is recruitment really the problem?

Seeing loads of posts the recruitment has been poor, the players aren't good enough, huge Jan window, squad terrible etc.
Has it really been poor?
General theme couple weeks ago was it was the best transfer window in ages.
There's certainly issues to be addressed - keeper, left sided centre back to name a couple... squad depth.
Who is poor in the starting 11 today - the posts saying we can't play 4-4-2 until we get better players had me wondering.
Do we get better than Boyle on the right, Youan on the left. Do we expect to bring in better central players than Newell and Levitt or better striker than Vente.
Everyone was creaming themselves when we were after these boys. Whole support desperate to see Fish back. Miller and Obita having praises sung a couple weeks back.
We showed good ambition and fronted up big money for a host of signings that went down a storm at the time. These boys all poor now?
I would say recruitment has been a mixed bag of hit and miss, it probably is at most clubs. Just don't think players are poor, recruitment is poor and that's that. Don't know what the answer is but we have good enough players now to win games like this. Bit of luck/decisions and we win today against a team spent more in recruitment than we have.
Up to NM and coaches to get a tune out of what's there, waiting to Jan window/own players doesn't cut it for me.
I gather this won't be popular but hey ho

Not entirely, it's also the mentality at the club for me.

If we want to be third or win a cup, then yes we need better than Newell and Levitt.

As ive said on another thread it worries me a bit that some people are pinning their hopes on Monty getting a window to get in players. Does he have the contacts to improve us in terms of player recruitment???
We need better all over the pitch but that costs money, hopefully the rumours of a large investment helps us achieve that.

That's surely the DOF's job.

Yeh agreed, but the manager has influence as well.
Also the DOF model in place hasnt exactly delivered results so far on the pitch yet.

I think Vente and Obita are 2 examples of good players brought in by McDermott but he's only really had 1 window as DOF. Monty came in after the window so we'll see in the next who he needs, he'll work closely with the DOF but the manager doesn't go and get these players, it'll all be down who is available and prices etc, lets hope any rumoured investment helps us get the better players needed.

I’d add ALF to that, who has been excellent and we really could have done with yesterday.

The idea that we have a barrel load of good players was wild a few weeks ago and is still as wild now.
We’re a poor side with a manager who isn’t getting enough out the players he has.

When was the last time a player ran the show ?
I remember SJM used to run the show.
Dylan used to run the show.
Latapy etc.
We have some ok players but all very similar and rarely does a single player drive us to win a game.
Newell - Boyle etc all have moments but when was the last time a player was a standout for the full game??!
Recruitment of Ben CEO making dodgy decisions of manager - poor player recruitment has definitely put us back - always feels like we are playing catch up.
Football is ever changing but feels like we are constantly rebuilding to cover up mistakes.

Agree with this. We've made some really poor recruitment decisions in recent years, including managerial appointments but it's not the only reason we're seeing no improvement in our fortunes.
The club needs to grow a backbone on and off the pitch. We are far too nicey nicey.
We need strong leaders on and off the pitch and we appear to have none.
