Was a complete stitch up from FIFA and the Saudis to make sure Europe, South America and Africa all hold World Cup 2030 matches. Thus enabling only Asia and Oceania to be able to bid for 2034. Australia step aside as they know what's already been paid for.

FIFA an utter disgrace. The fraud expose did nothing, still as corrupt as any organisation can be.

I will not be watching this tournament and I hope to god that major nations boycott it.

Football is dead.

6 of the 10 stadiums would be too small. Would take a lot of investment and we seen with their commonwealth games that prices can spiral. They should have jumped in with other nations who have a few stadiums.

It's sad that south America getting token games in 30 rules then out, an absolute swindle to keep the path clear for Saudi.

Another soulless tournament in purpose built stadiums and fan zones in the desert

A North Korea, Russia, Belarus and Saudi Arabia semi final set up should see the sponsors happy.

Not strange as the race has already been run. They knew what was coming so there was no point carrying on. The brown envelopes were opened a while ago.

Me too. I was on the fence about boycotting Qatar but ended up watching some of the games.

This is an absolute disgrace though. One of the worst human rights records in the world.

Oh and prepare for another winter competition. No way they are hosting games in Saudi in July if they couldn't manage it in Qatar.

I'm at the point where I'm ready to give up on all football that isn't Hibs.

Pretty much where I am. I enjoyed last years world cup for the football itself but a line in the sand has to be drawn somewhere

Of course. Sadly, it wasn't unanimous.

There were only 13 or 14 posts on here before yours. That's hardly representative of anything.

I would imagine the same people who wanted such investment in hibs are also perfectly OK with a Saudi world cup. They just haven't commented.

Right now is the time to make it clear to FIFA that we - and I mean Scotland- will not be participating in the tournament- it would be bold but wonderful at the same time - it won’t happen of course ☹️

Absolutely - issue is that money still talks and I'd imagine it would be the Saudis fronting a new world order (see Golf) so it will be a perpetuating issue.

The issue is money. It always will be. Changing competitions etc is just putting new lipstick on a pig.

I am just glad Hibs are so far removed from the upper circles that we have a genuine local product we can all enjoy (OF-aside).

Nobody did anything when it went to Russia and Qatar. The beautiful game is in fact the ugly game and it keeps getting uglier. The players all have their little plastic fans though who will claim they deserve it as football is a short career and playing in the launderers paradise EPL isn't enough for the wee darlings. Watching people try to defend Jordon Henderson was such a hoot. F@nnies the lot of them.

True Russia world cup was post stealing Ukraine and parts of Georgia. The US world cup and the euros in England will be post 500k dead Iraqis. Many watched the Chinese Olympics when they have Uyghurs in concentration camps. Don't get me wrong Saudis are abhorrent and it's everything wrong with football it going there, but why boycott this and not others

I get your point s27- where do you draw the line and decide a country isn’t fit to host a football World Cup due to morals?

Also, some would argue that because the regimes in these places are abhorrent, does that automatically mean the people of such countries should be denied the opportunity of hosting events?

I’m not for a second saying that SA should be given this. But I do see where you’re coming from.

I'm also not for one minute saying Saudi should get it. Its a sham and its disgustingly been bought like Qatar and Russia. Even worse is making the previous tournament held in Africa, Europe and South America to make sure they can't go against Asia. It's a horrible horrible regime

It's probably less of a sham than Qatar in regards to population, with it being 33mil rather than 2.5. Also Saudi has genuinely been football daft for decades think of Al-Owairans goal in 94 and the celebrations after they beat Belgium, Morocco and made it through thegroup.

Obviously it went ahead but I wouldn't say exactly "nothing" was was done about Qatar. There were plenty of dissenting voices. You can argue ultimately how effective they were but it didn't exactly go unquestioned...

They've lowered the number of established grounds during the bid, can build/upgrade the rest after.

That's a fair point. There were dissenting voices and action amongst fans and I should have pointed that out. Very few apart from token words from money people though. Advertising at record levels. Pundits speaking out after attending and pocketing the cash. Too many greedy piggy's wanting more and more.

Presumably no one has a problem with illegal wars, drone targeting and subsequent killings, years of rendition flights, imprisoning and torturing suspects on no charge basis on a non domicile island prison camp, persecution of journalists who leaked their war crimes and/or inplict and explicit support for various nasty dictatorships throughout the word or arming and actively supporting a country to the teeth who indiscrimately bomb refugee camps and hospitals.

All the hypocrites will be watching that one I suspect.

When it comes to training, financing, and arming despicable murderous regimes, the US sits proudly on top of the league.

When homosexuals are getting arrested and beaten to death in the streets, we'll compare. US are bad, Saudi are 100x worse.

The US government hasn't chopped up any journalists recently either.

Is there a difference morally though, when the US props up disgusting regimes through all sorts of ways even if it doesn't inflict such crimes on its own citizens?

You may be correct tbh. Their stance on Israel is shocking right now for example. So is ours.

Still. I think Saudis human rights abuses should see them expelled from hosting a bingo tournament never mind the world cup.

I have a problem with winter world cups?

Surely the criteria has to be summer?

Also, my unmarried partner and I want to go and enjoy the World Cup. How can this happen?

Budweiser and the likes? Presume no sponsorship from them.

I fancy having a wander round Mecca, but I’m not a Muslim ❌

Certain legal opiate prescription drug in the U.K. will see you behind bars in Saudi. How will people with pain management get to the games.

Never mind, chopping up journalists, bombing Yemen (never in the papers, similar death totals to Gaza at the moment), woman’s rights, gay rights, HUMAN rights, freedom of expression, free press, an actual fair legal system, democracy, the list goes on.
