Why is it called the derby? I remember way back when I was a student and I mentioned I was travelling back to Edinburgh for the derby most folk thought I meant a horse race.

I don't think there's a definitive answer, but the two main theories I've seen are:
- Because of the popularity of the Derby (the horse race), it became a general term for a major sporting event, including major football matches such as those between city rivals.
- The Shrovetide football game (a village football game involving hundreds of folk trying to get a ball to a particular point) in Derby was particularly violent, and so it became a shorthand for any fiercely contested match.

There’s another theory that the Earl of Derby owned Stanley Park between Anfield and Goodison. A newspaper report in the early 1900s called a game between Liverpool and Everton as The Derby Match…

But why is Derby called Derby? I think that must be at the root of it
