Its odd. Most did not want Hoof ball as we had resorted to under LJ.
Now we are trying to build play / retain possession and there are grumblings when its not lobbed forward at every phase..
Hard job pleasing football fans :tee hee:

It's mad. I constantly hear folk shouting "get it up the park" or "stop pissing about" when trying to build a move. People always talk about playing "the Hibs way" as being some kind of free flowing, attacking football yet some of the shouts would suggest otherwise. Strange.

Some of the shouts at the game today were mental. Guy in front of me was just about having a heart attack because Marshall didn't punt it long to a lone Hibs player v 5 defenders less than a minute before HT when we were 1-0 up. Clueless. Same guy went nuts at Jeggo for passing it backwards when he had a man right on him and was facing his own goal. Where the **** do you want him to go? People also getting all worked up when the CBs gave it to Newell when there was a man on him and he knocked it wide to the full backs 1st time, triangles are about the first thing you learn in football but obviously some people never played beyond 4 year old so never learned it.
Thankfully the reaction to the performance on here seems a bit more positive than some of the crap I heard at the game.

Hopefully it’s a symptom of being stung so much and so often by the results under the previous couple of regimes. If Montyball continues to improve results, I’m sure the fans will adjust to the patience of our play.
I’d much rather see us playing out and being patient than just punting it aimlessly to the channels as we often did under Johnson. The players will need time to adjust too, but it’s worth doing.

Retaining possession is fine if the players in front of the ball are making movements to show for it. Much easier with two upfront rather than the lone striker.

Kevin Harper made the same point on Hibs TV. We’re 1-0 up at home, coming up for HT and keeping possession nicely. Surely it made more sense to hold on to the ball and let St Johnstone force the pace, open up a bit and allow us to take advantage of the gaps that appear. Just aimlessly punting the ball upfield hoping it will stick and in doing so risking giving away possession doesn’t seem like much of a plan to me. Maybe some folks just prefer hoofball.

As ever results will determine whether the style of play is acceptable to most.
I personally love possession based football as long as its played with a bit of pace. Maloney always tried the possession based stuff but it was painfully slow and we couldn't buy a win.
I enjoyed a lot of what I saw today, particularly in the second half

That's pretty much the norm these days. I don't understand it. I saw a clip the other day of a goal scored, by of all teams, Gateshead, where there were 37 passes completed in the lead up to a goal. They played patiently, going backwards a few times before breaking the lines an getting into an area where the goal was on. I can't imagine that being accepted by some at ER. There are a very vocal minority who want it forward at all costs. It's tedious. When winning, keep the ball. If you've got it. The opposition can't score. Why is that so hard to grasp?

Not quite to the levels of 37 passes but we had a couple of fantastic attacks in the 2nd half, cutting StJ open just the end product that was missing. Still trying to figure out how Youan missed his opportunity

I actually was sad enough to freeze the ball as it crossed the line for the second goal. Hibs had five players in the box to st johnstones 3 defenders and 1 goalie.
I love to see that. It’s a sign of the attacking football we will get used to seeing.
All the nervous bed wetting needs to stop as that was about as a convincing two nil win you will ever see. St Johnstone were poor but still always a tough team to beat in our short term history.
4-4-2 is back, and it’s beautiful.
The save from Marshall also was fantastic, however on replay I think it would have been given offside as the player on the line was impeding his vision. But with Scottish var, maybe not
Great start and suddenly it’s 7/9 with 2 tricky away games ticked off.

It really is mental some of the stuff you hear from the stands/read online.

The one thing that annoyed me yesterday was the lack of movement at times, fish and rocky were coming out with the ball and struggling to find someone in space, very much a work in progress but looked like something they were struggling with

Hibs still getting used to the system. ATM, players pass it across the back but fail to then spot or exploit the gaps or openings in front of them. It's all just one paced (slow), with the ball recycled too often - usually going back to Marshall. Add in Fish, Rocky and Jeggo getting caught on the ball as the last man and you can easily see why the crowd get frustrated and nervous. All we see is us going nowhere much of the time, but risking giving easy chances to the opposition.I like the new approach but we need the players to execute this properly and am not convinced we have them.
Ironically, there were 3 or 4 long balls in the first half that led to half chances :greengrin

I think there’s a difference between getting the ball forward and just hopfibg the ball high in the air up top. There were instances in the game yesterday where a ball was on forward but we opt to play around with it at the back. We need our play makers on the ball more, not just rocky, fish and Marshall keeping the ball between them. We’re too slow at getting the ball forward though, Boyle, vente, ALF and Jair made some good runs yesterday but we played the ball back or sideways. I seen Monty and the assistants going mad on the sidelines in the first half when we passed the ball back.
We’re still in the mindset of Lee Johnson though, it’ll take a while before Monty gets his style of play across to the players, and a lot longer for them to feel comfortable implementing it.

First half yesterday there were definitely times where I could understand a bit frustration. We were dithering at times.
Second half at 1-0 up there was a time when Jeggo kept the ball by going to the centre halves and it drew a big groan from the crowd. Three passes later we were in their box.
Thought the crowd were generally supportive yesterday and there was a totally different feel about the place going in.

I think the challenge yesterday was we were being caught in possession a fair bit yesterday which caused nervousness in the crowd, folk not confident it won't lead to conceding. Monty himself referred to it in his interview, said we we could have passed quicker to avoid being caught.
Second half was much better. I think if the fans see a bit of possession as building rather than feeding into previous negative perceptions of possession for possession sake i.e. Maloney then we should get less panic!

We're doing fine if you're only complaining about a few individual shouts coming from the stands.
The support for the team was fantastic yesterday, and in no way were the crowd being impatient or demanding hoof-ball.

I thought that was the best 90 minutes we've had for a good while. We restricted Saints to one shot on target, a huge defensive improvement. We were organised and had a plan. Not perfect but lots better

I’ve seen airdrie’s goal from yesterday. 25 passes I think. Retained the ball and went absolutely nowhere out their own half with the first 21. They were literally about 5 yards further forward than when they won the ball back. Jrr we’reot possession and then eventually passed into the opposition box where the boy tucked it away. The very definition of retention and recycling. Absolutely no hurry to get it forward till the time and space was right.
