SIR ALEX FERGUSON has taken aim at the clubs who voted to expel Rangers from the Scottish top flight during their financial turmoil.
And the Scottish managerial great reckons a drop in attendances as the Ibrox side worked their way back through the divisions following administration and liquidation was "a lesson" to them.
Ten of the 12 then SPL clubs essentially voted to remove the Ibrox side from the top tier back in the summer of 2012 - with Kilmarnock abstaining and oldco Rangers themselves voting for a motion which would have allowed newco Rangers to take over their spot in the top tier.
The SFL then voted to re-admit the Ibrox men at the bottom level as they embarked on their journey back through the divisions.
And Ferguson - speaking in a major interview for Rangers TV - has hailed the Ibrox fans for "keeping their dignity".
He reckons they could easily have punished teams who voted them out by saying "well I'm not going there".

"But to get back, it was a long journey, it wasn't overnight.
"I was surprised about Rangers, after they got back in the Premier League, they [the fans] still travelled.
They could easily have said 'well I'm not going there, you voted us out'. But they kept their dignity."

Did crowds go down and did clubs suffer financially from it ? To be honest it was so long ago when rangers died as a club I honestly cant remember complaints in the media from clubs having to get the begging bowls out due to loss of income
Obviously the likes of St Johnstone/St Mirren, Kilmarnock etc would have taken a hit x 2 per season but was there such a big outcry ?
What I do remember is that the bucky swigging hordes of the undead swarmed all over wee towns and most likely bringing their bile with them and I certainly remember they were crammed into the likes of Brechin etc, certainly going by tv evidence as they were never off the bloody thing

The 4 years Rangers were "downstairs" saw the following unprecedented (in the modern era) wide array of clubs take a national trophy:
Celtic
Aberdeen
St Johnstone
St Mirren
Inverness
Ross County
Oh and another team in green won their first Scottish Cup since 1902.👍🏆
Plus Dundee United and Falkirk reached finals. Even the Jambos did too although they were bumped by St. Mirren. A great day!
Armageddon it was not.

2013-19 was the best ever time to follow Scottish football
The Brexitland/Rule Brittania bigots were being humiliated at grounds from Peterhead to "same old Alloa"
Everyone else was winning trophies (except Hearts of course)
4-0 at Easter Road
3-2 at ER
3-2 at Ibrox
3-2 at Hampden
3-1 at Hampden
All fantastic memories

Must admit I had a slight panic when I saw this thread title. Glad it is just an old man becoming a little forgetfulPoor wee lamb must have forgotten that the hun fans walked away from the previous entity, and it was the now defunct Glasgow rangers who actually decided to liquidate themselves as the alternative to paying all their debts.
If there was a negative effect on Scottish football I must have missed it.
Sevco fans continue to be a blight on modern Scottish society and culture but that's another story.

11 years on and Scottish media are still pretending clubs voted to expel Rangers rather than Rangers not being able to be in the league as per the rules due to liquidation. Rangers died. If Scottish football wasn't a farce before then (it was) it certainly has been since.
As great a manager as he was he's still an old blue nose who's bitter about the treatment of his old cheating club. I couldn't care less what he thinks about that period in Rangers history, **** them and him.

That chat did happen though, when they were drawn against teams above them in the leagues, Dundee Utd comes to mind, the rangers fans were threatening not to go and deprive them of the ‘blue pound’ - has fergie had his head buried in the sand all these years?
And as has been said, this is the same club he refused to manage because they wanted to know about his wife’s religion, yet now he’s suddenly defending them, a decade after the were liquidated…

Sir Alex has lost it here.
If the clubs had allowed them to remain in the league it would have been tantamount to cheating. This wasn't a club who went into administration and took a points penalty, it was liquidation due to the fact that no-one wanted to take over a club facing a massive tax evasion case due to the scandal around the EBT payments.
Their situation was akin to Gretna who were bombed entirely from the professional leagues.
You won't get any hun admit it however even after all these years I still think they were very fortunate to begin again in the 4th tier - if it had been up to me it would have been a lot lower.
Ferguson going on about dignity - sporting integrity was far more important here and the top flight knew they were going to suffer financially for a few years but the majority of the clubs and fans look back fondly on the time that they were not in the top league.

This is political though. Fergie is a Labour man and a Unionist. He'll sell out any principles for his precious union. It's the same reason both Tory and Labour are trying to cosy up to the Orange Order. Utter welts and any respect I've had for Sir Alex has just gone down the swanny.

Almost all the lower league teams got higher attendances as The Rangers climbed up through the leagues. But I felt sorry for Albion Rovers and Morton, who missed out due to relegation in 12/13 and 13/14.

Our average attendance went up the year after they were given their very underserved lifeline. Saying that our average would have been higher if team like Livi, Dundee, The Rangers and Hearts had not cheated their way to false league and cup positions
