Had a car crash on Friday, all my fault. Never noticed the give way sign and ploughed into a car that was passing.

Both them and me are fine, she had a bit of a sore chest with the air bags going off, i'm completely fine.

Police were called and i've given a statement and insurance company informed. My car is a write off, i'd imagine hers is too.

I had no claims protection insurance, will my insurance go up even though i had this?

Also It was a 2016 BMW 1series M sport, bought last year from the BMW garage for £13500.

The car was in mint condition, 31000 miles on the clock, what should i expect roughly as an offer from them as its a write off, and can i refuse and seek more than their first offer?

This is my first ever crash in 40 odd years of driving, i've never had to deal with an insurance company before?

Seen a very similar car with same mileage and condition for £12999.

With no claims protection, you will probably see your no claims period reduced. So if you have 12 years no claims, it may get reduced to 10 years or 9 years, which will probably increase your insurance policy when it renews. You’ll also likely have to declare that you were in an accident that was your fault.

Insurance companies are fly at how they operate, there’s no claims protection, and there’s no claims guaranteed, which costs more as an add on and as the name suggests, means your no claims isn’t impacted by an accident.

As for the valuation, I’ve no idea what they will offer, but afaik you don’t need to necessarily accept it straight off the bat, you can argue your case with them. Depending on how you bought it, there’s also the potential finance complications, and gap insurance if you took that too.

Glad to hear you and everyone else came out of it ok btw

Cheers matey, yes both of us fine. I was only doing 15-20 miles an hour but never saw the give way sign. There's no finance on the car, never had to claim before so i'm just a bit naive with this if i'm honest. :greengrin

Fingers crossed all goes smoothly with the insurance, no finance makes it a bit easier to get things tied up.

Have a wee nosy around for similar cars, it’ll give you an idea of the value. parkers.co.uk will be able to give some guidance on this as well I think

As far as I am aware your no claims will be protected but as others have said insurance companies fly and your premium will go up in future. It will be because they've added a crash (or whatever they want to call it) premium. If it wasn't your fault you might stand a chance of getting it knocked off. Sadly not in your case.

As for the written off car they will make you an offer. Make sure you're sitting down! They will argue long and hard for a valuation way below what you're thinking. It could take sometime before you reach a settlement.

The fact you mention having already seen a similar car for sale will be a big help in any negotiation.

When my wife had her crash and our car was written off we had the money in our account within a few days and valuation was more than fair

That was our first claim too and the process via aviva was really flawless

My insurance went up when somebody went in to the back of me so it’s odds on yours will go up.
I ended up in a ditch outside Inveraray at the tail end of 2021 and knew instantly the car was a write off. I was planning on getting rid anyway so had checked out the market value just the week before. The payout was way more than I had expected and was made quickly.

Can't talk to the no claims aspect, I've never taken out the protection, but I was in what felt at the time like a relatively minor collision in 2020.

The car was driven 20 miles to the insurere's chosen garage but nevertheless deemed a write-off! Anyway, the offer was better than I had anticipated, maybe by 10-15%.

I would be curious as to the effect of resale values increasing though. My dealership has been trying to buy back my current car for the last twelve months.

I had a Toyota Celicaa few years ago and a driver pulled out of a junction onto the main road, smashed my car's rear end with hers and sent it spinning down a deep ditch, write-off.

The insurance company made me an offer which I considered too low and I was asked what I thought it was worth. I said I'd seen other similar Celicas in Autotrader for a certain price and the insurers asked me to send links of the examples in an email. After carefully selecting examples that were favourable to my climb I sent details for three cars and they actually paid out more than I had originally expected.

Yes, you should do this, Gary.

Also, if your car had any added options like memory seats, heated steering wheel, metallic paint, HUD etc etc make sure you tell them about them and look for a similarly spec'd car, or better.

Don't take the first offer, even if it sounds reasonable.

PS What was your registration?

My wife had agreed to give her car in part ex 2 days before firemen had to cut the roof of to free her after an accident. The insurance paid £1000 more than the part ex was worth so something positive came out of the crash, which wasn’t her fault
