From Will Fish getting chased from a lion to asking the Celtic players what they eat.

What is your favourite Lee Johnson quote/story you heard about his time at Hibs?

I heard his initiation song on joining the club was Elton John’s “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest word”…

Cupping his ear to the Hibs fans at 1-1 versus Livvy and sitting back down again one minute later at 1-2 (allegedly)

Sums him up

I’ve read a lot of people getting told on here that the “David Brent” comments were unnecessary and poor comment.

I have to say though , for me, when comparing Lee Johnson to David Brent it was a term of endearment rather than insult. Deep down, Brent was a nice guy who was simply trying too hard.

Lee Johnson’s quirky way with words was part of the charm for me.

Don't know if I agree in the David Brent analysis. To me he was a narcissistic and self-serving person who cloaked himself in a faux-persona that he thought other people would like.

Lee Johnson seems like an alright guy (if a bit quirky), just not the best manager.

There was a diagram of what LJ used to refer to play positions as but I cannot for the life of me find it. Sunderland fan sent it to me.

Whilst googling for it, I found an article on loads of different quotes he's said over the course of him being a manager, just a load of old tosh.

Nice guy without doubt but if he was chocolate he's get wired in.

See, that sort of thing really annoys me. Managers can spout off all sorts of nonsense when they first join, and introductory press conferences are littered with grandiose promises about pressing, attacking flair and excitement. LJ said pretty much all of this, and then promptly seemed to forget it. Naismith across the city has pretty much done the same according to my Hearts mate, promising high intensity attacking play, only to have his team wander about passing sideways slowly.

If I got a job having made all sorts of assurances about what I was going to do, I would expect to be held to account. Apparently, football managers don't.

Also, I'm fairly convinced I could make up a waffling quote that makes some analogy about hard work and something unrelated like scissors or Wheatabix and attribute it to LJ and it would sound believable.

I asked ChatGPT for a Johnson quote post defeat and this is what it came up with. Not that far from the mark really:

""Well, that was a challenging match for us today. We knew going into it that our opponents were a strong side, and they definitely brought their A-game. We had our moments and created some good opportunities, but unfortunately, the final result didn't go our way. It's disappointing, no doubt, but we're not going to let this define us. Our team is like a good single malt – it takes time to mature and develop its full flavor. We'll analyze the game, learn from our mistakes, and continue working hard in training. Our fans have been fantastic, and their support means the world to us. We'll take this setback as a stepping stone towards our goals and come back stronger in the next match. It's all part of the journey, and we're committed to making it a successful one."

I think my favourite actual quote was the following in 442 magazine immediately after he was appointed which turned out to be completely unadulterated 5hite:

"“The main thing is to get a supporter base who feel attached and can identify with the performance. I want the fanbase to really be a part of our performance, that’s absolutely key for me.

“Can we have such a clear identity in the way we play that they can start to recognise key factors in games and therefore get behind us and support us?

“I want an aggressive team in terms of being forward-thinking. I want players to play forward and run forward. The simple aspect is to make sure we are playing with such a tempo and high line we can force the opposition into unforced errors.

“I want us to be world-class in transition and you need athletic players for that with quality and good decision-making.”

He achieved literally none of that. Zero.

It actually works quite well if you reverse the pitch. So we have the Bomb (Scare) Zones for our right and left backs then the Corridor of Confusion across the front of our goal where our keeper and centre backs get in each others way.

I think there are two categories of quotes that LJ got slated for – there's the actual nonsense, and then there's the stuff that's just common jargon within football.

'Matchday minus one' might be unfamiliar or grating or seem grandiose or whatever, but it seems to be commonly used:

https://twitter.com/NUFC/status/1654871139187916801
https://www.afc.co.uk/video/matchday-minus-one-media-conference-in-sweden/
https://www.asroma.com/en/news/68258/gallery-matchday-minus-one

Seen the same thing before with JR and Maloney sometimes being slated for 'coaching speak' in their interviews – it doesn't mean they never talked s***e and no doubt their interviews could have been better, but it always seems unfair criticism when elements of the language they use day in, day out in their job slip into an interview.
