Team selection double header time, I don't see SDG making to many drastic changes on Thursday to keep players for Sunday.

From Goggle he played a 4-2-3-1 Vs Celtic in the league cup final.

Villa

Marshall

Miller
Harbottle
Rocky
Hanlon
Stevenson

Jeggo
Newell
Rudi

Vente
Boyle/Youan

Boyle or Youan can drift either side with Rudi going either wing at times, I just don't want a really embarrassing scoreline, with a lot of fight from us.

Aberdeen

Marshall

Fish or Harbottle if he was selected Vs villa and played well
Rocky
Hanlon

Miller
Jeggo
Newell
Lewis/Obita

Boyle
Vente
Youan

I feel Fish deserves to be dropped for the time being, I feel a 3-4-3 could be something different to try.

If we can keep it on the deck then we should have a chance.

I have no idea if Marshall is even fit to play either game.

Team could be anything as I honestly now believe players were (whether deliberately or not) vastly underperforming under Johnson.

We tried 3-4-3 under maloney and it was brutal

I'd rather we just saved legs when we play Villa and focus more on the sheep game, sheep have a tough European game and we have a chance to get something at Pittodrie on the back of it.

Play the kids Vs villa, I honestly don't think I'll even watch the game, it's meaningless and will only tire our first team before a massive game Vs Aberdeen.

And I'm a die hard fan too, but I have even less interest in the villa game than a preseason friendly.

Not too concerned with the Villa game but for Aberdeen I’d think it’ll be a back to basics type approach.

I don’t think we’ll persist with Youan and Boyle on the wings. One will drop out or play up front with Vente IMO. More of a Jack Ross type set up where the central midfield sit deep and we have a front 2 playing closely together.

Marshall

Miller
Rocky
Hanlon
Obita

Newell (left of centre)
Jeggo
JDH

Boyle (wide right)

Youan
Vente

Tend to agree with this, play the development squad against Villa & hope Aberdeen have a really tough game going to extra time. Give our better players a chance to reenergise.

If we’ve concluded that a number of our key players can’t handle mid week and weekend games together (worrying in of itself), then I’d be resting them all against Villa. Have to suspect Villa will be playing a weaker team too, in relative terms anyway.

Think the whole midweek thing was completely overplayed by Johnson. I’m not saying it wouldn’t have some kind of impact on physical output but it didn’t lead to some of the issues we were seeing. Particularly after the game against the Andorrans, that was a training session. But if you continually tell folk it’s really difficult and they can’t do something, they’ll believe it.

We have two games this week then no game for a fortnight so time for the players to knuckle down and get some pride back.

However you only have to look at the weekend just passed where Hearts lost to Dundee and Aberdeen by all accounts were played off the park by St Mirren and were handed multiple huge slices of luck to scrape a draw.

JDH wasn’t on the bench at the weekend i’m sure so doubt he’s going to start either game.

From the teams picked so far, we either need to play some youngsters or get 2 new midfielders in. Only Newell is worth of a starting place of our central midfielders.

Me as well mate. I even started a thread about it and got absolutely slaughtered for suggesting we play as few probable picks for Pittodrie as we can get away with, with the bonus being if any of the fringe players or kids show up well at Villa we think about them for Sunday.

I certainly won't be watching it .... I'll just shut my ears and eyes shouting 'la la la la la la la' for the 90 minutes and then check on here for the result praying we don't get an absolute belting, and by that I mean 7 or 8 nil.

As things stand the Aberdeen game is so far ahead of the Villa one in order of importance it's not even a contest. Some folk might say, well what's the point of even being in Europe if that's the attitude. But the truth is in the future it isn't beyond us to get to the group stages, we just got unlucky this time with absolutely the worst draw we could have got in the playoff game.

I would love another shot next season, knackering our best players running around Villa park chasing a lost cause and making our slim chances of 3 points at Aberdeen even slimmer makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever if we are serious about finishing high enough up the league to do that.

Agree. Ties gone, we have to concentrate on getting something at Pittodrie as we already have ground to make up on our “rivals”.

As others have said, the team could be pretty much anything. The Villa line-up won’t actually tell us anything about the next few weeks as it’s for a very specific task. I’d like to see our Aberdeen team as;

…………..…………Doidge/ALF…………………….

…..Youan………..…..Vente……………..Boyle…

………….…..Newell…………..Jeggo…….……

Stevenson…..Hanlon…..Harbottle……Miller

………………………..Marshall………………………

Doidge or ALF leading the line. Both are clever players and can bring others into the game with either guile or physicality, depending on who plays.
Youan and Boyle provide pace on the wings. Both could easily offer an additional option up front.
Although Vente is a forward (and I think he’s a decent one), he looks like he could play a 10 role really well. Seems like a clever player with a good eye and likes to drop deep and get involved anyway.
Newell can get on the ball in midfield and pick passes with runners in ahead of him or Vente offering short. Jeggo can do the dirty work and recycle the ball onto more creative outlets quickly.
Stevenson offers solidity at left back, as that flank won’t get much protection from Youan. Miller on the other side of the pitch offers aggression and drive. Think he needs a good run of games to see what he offers.
Hanlon needs to play at the back, though I think we might see a slightly more commanding role from him going forward. I wouldn’t have Fish partnering him as he’s looked bereft of confidence since returning. Harbottle could step in there and stake a claim.
Keeper picks itself for now, though I think that Marshall needs to start showing his value.
