View Full Version : Managerial turnover - a bit of context

On a human level it’s not nice to see people losing their jobs. As far as being beneficial to the club, a rapid turnover is not usually a good idea. Yes, you do have the occasional gaffer who has an immediate impact but in the main I would guess that most really become successful after a couple of years in post when a team truly becomes their own.
I would certainly like Hibs to have a bit of stability/success with a leader in place for 4/5 seasons.
However, let’s not be fooled by the narrative punted by many that this is an issue particular to Hibernian. ‘Poisoned chalice’, ‘revolving door’, ‘hire and fire’, ‘trigger happy’, ‘directionless and adrift’. The sort of guff spouted about us in the press in particular.
If ‘year zero’ began after us winning the Cup. Then starting from the 2016/17 season gives not too long, or too short a period of time but does supply a decent ‘sample group’ for context. It covers the ‘seven year itch’ as we are a month or so into the 8th season.
So, only counting permanent appointments, not caretakers, since the 16/17 season Hibs have had 5 gaffers (about to hire our 6th). How does this compare with the other 11 in the league (and also the most recently relegated).
St Johnstone- 3
Celtc - 4 (counting Rodgers twice)
Aberdeen - 4
Livingston - 4
Motherwell - 5
Ross County - 5
St Mirren - 6
derStickies - 6
Hertz - 6 (counting Neilson twice) (7 if you count Naeclass and McAvoy as 2 separate appointments)
Dundee - 7
Kilmarnock - 7
Dundee United - 8
It’s not ideal but let’s not have our detractors con us into believing that this is a problem peculiar to Hibernian.

Agreed entirely. Even on here, as a stick to beat the longevity of LS and PH we've read "they've been present through an absolute revolving door of managers" style chat as if it's something extraordinarily Hibernian, whereas we're actually resolutely mid table as far as managerial turnover goes - how apt :greengrin

Good point well made.
The media are loving this, the tone across the bbc when covering it was almost salivating like. Their sensationalist crap is best ignored.

Richard Gordon was trying to sensationalise the amount of managers we’ve had but it was actually Willie miller who put him straight and said it’s how football is these days and isn’t unique to Hibs.
Gordon was loving it yesterday but surprisingly miller and craigan were downplaying it all

I thought Craigan was quite complimentary about us yesterday
Despite the criticism he receives on here about his Hunnish views

Based on the point being made should it not just be a tally of sacked/mutually consented managers?

I heard Gordon and he was listing managers like Collins, Lennon , Williamson, Mowbray, Stubbs etc that left of their own accord, just to get his dig in..
For what it's worth, the next incumbent of the hot seat will be the 30th in my lifetime. Given that Shaw, Turnbull and Miller were in charge for a total of around 30 years that is quite a turnover.

Jim Duffy was our 20th (permanent) manager in 122 years when appointed in 1997.
26 years later we are looking for our 17th manager since Duffy.

That's how society has changed.
It requires instant gratification and disposable everything.
Football merely reflects that.

Alex Miller was here for 10 years. If social media was around then it would have been 10 months.

I’d hazard a guess most clubs are in a similar boat.
