We all know the FIFA world rankings are erm…convoluted and complicated in parts, but sometimes they seem to not give some matches the importance many would think they deserved..

Eg

The Matildas went into the Women’s World Cup Finals in 10th place.

They battled through to the semi finals.

As a result of their ‘success’ in the tournament they are now in 11th place.

These things are normally a rolling average over a two year period. Some good results probably dropped off or other countries ranked lower over achieved.

Get all that, but I …and certainly other punters with even less knowledge than me could be excused for thinking that when a team competes in the crème de La crème tournament…..the World Cup finals….and it makes it to the semi finals, ie the last 4, that some tweaking is maybe needed if they are relegated on the table?

I can nearly explain the reasoning behind the drop to…casual fans in Oz who took to the streets to celebrate the Matildas success, but still get the same puzzled looks and the ‘But they finished 4th in the world cup’ exclamation.

No doubt there have been similar anomalies of similar magnitude in the past, but this one has puzzled a lot of people!
