For anyone travelling to Ireland or maybe visiting family here I would highly recommend you try this chicken product , nicest chicken I've ever eaten tbh . Abit dearer than the normal chicken products though well worth it .

"Truffle magic" - tried it in Sorrento and it was delicious, although quite expensive (but if you're in the market for truffle powder anyway then it's maybe not too much more).

On the Italian theme Rega San Marzano tinned tomatoes.

About £2.50 a can so pricey for a tinned tomato but they are amazing. For anything that cooks for ages or has tomatoes as a background then I'll just use the cheap ones but for soemthing all about the tomatoes then I've always got a couple of tins of these.

San Marzanos are a world apart from ordinary plum tomatoes. :agree:

I’ve used the rega ones and the mutti ones and don’t notice much difference. Mutti San Marzanos are available in Waitrose.

:agree:This is an excellent tip. Also for a slightly different flavour additive try nutritional yeast, often used to add a cheese flavour but I think it does a similar job to Marmite, just a bit mellower. Also good for your gut health, both are of course yeast derivatives. Used to only be available in wholefood shops, but I have seen it in a number of supermarkets recently. Engevite is the main brand name for it.

The Pinch of Nom recipe books.

Been eating a lot more healthily these last couple of years, and it's great to have familiar foods that are a lot healthier.

Just had their version of Coq Au Vin for tea which although not as good as something made with really good red wine and with lots of butter in the sauce was still very tasty.

I love my food and not having to give up much has been a godsend.

Honestly not sure mate, it is a completely different colour over there, looks like the old school orangeade you used to get in glass bottles when I was a kid

Should try Jarritos Mexican Sodas, the Mexican Cola flavour tastes like the original Cola’s of 50 years ago. Around 9g sugar per 100g. Made with sugar cane and all natural flavour

I always preferred Kas Limon when I was in Spain.

Don't think it's ever been sold in the UK and I think they have recently lowered their sugar content by quite a bit as well, from around 7g down to about 4.5.

Gaseosa is my soft drink of choice when in Spain. Tremendous stuff and no sugar. Do think there is a lot of salt in it though (you can't taste it).

Kas and gin is nice when roasting. Equally I don't like shandy or tops here but stayed at Port Adventura theme park and it was Estrella on tap everywhere. The Damm Lemon was pretty refreshing, tasted like actual lemon unlike our lemonades

I've actually been drinking diluting Vimto recently. They seem to have bucketloads of the stuff in ASDA at the moment and the original version of it seems to have the original sugar level in it. The "no added sugar" vimto orange and pineapple is actually quite pleasant as well, just so I'm not guzzling gallons of the sugary stuff.

Did coke reduce the sugar content? I thought they just cut the bottle size and increased the price and thats why its more expensive than other soft drinks.

Orange lucozade is another one. They've just changed it again and stuff is rotten now. Cheek to increase the price as well.

You’re right about coke.

I think Smartie was alluding that when he said it’s still enjoyable after the others changed their recipes.

They absolutely weren’t cheap, but it was the first time I’d had a steak in months due to my partner being pregnant and now having had our wee boy.

It was part of their “extra special” range but were as good as anything I’ve got direct from a butcher before.

I get 12 cans for £11.25 on Amazon subscribe and save.

A guy at work tried brewing his own with a borrowed scoby/culture but admitted it wasn't as nice as the packaged product, a lot of effort.

Vanilla protein puddings that you get in Lidl or Aldi.

So versatile - good to take in a packed lunch to work. A good low calorie and filling snack. Nice with stewed apples.

If you beat in one egg then 40g of sifted flour and a half teaspoon of baking powder, you can make a stack of three pancakes that are around 400 calories, around 30g of protein, and taste delicious.

Always have some in my fridge as they’re in the sweet spot of satisfying but also good for when you’re watching your calorie and protein intake.

Saw Simon Howie now do a Haggis burger. As a big fan of haggis it is magnificent.

Not sure if they have a new range or if it was because I was in Tesco when Sainsbury’s is nearest to us and they stock differently. Also bought their chorizo burger, which my wife said was also very good. I can’t stand the taste or smell of chorizo personally.

I put a rib eye steak in my bran new cast iron griddle , Let it sit at room temperture , Oil and seasoned the steak .. Brushed oil into the pan and put the pan on high as it could go , Put steaks on and within a minute my pan was smoking setting off every fire alarm in the house off !! Now did i have it to high ? though they say have the pan roasting hot :confused: Did i not put enough oil in the pan ? Steak was actually cooked perfect but the smoke was everywhere !

The oil in the pan was the problem, oil the steak not the pan.

Gin bothy do a rum marmalade that goes incredibly well with anything that has pineapple or another sweet, tropical dish. Made a pineapple tarte tatìn and brushed it with the marmalade let down with a tiny bit of hot water and it was great.

I have started going to my local Chinese supermarket up here in Dundee but there are three products that I now always have in my cupboard:

MSG. An obvious one but can be added to so many things and improve them.

Second is a Knorr brand, but it’s Chinese chicken powder. Dust it on anything savoury and it’s phenomenal. Wings, wedges, or just rub a little over a jacket potato before crisping the skin up and it is so incredibly savoury, it’s fantastic. Tastes like the crispy skin you get on a roast chicken. Awesome product.

Lee Kum Kee mushroom powder. Any stews, stocks, casseroles or sauces can be improved by it.

I made square sausage rolls recently. Brushed the square sausage in Dijon mustard and just used the roll out pastry you get in supermarkets. They were excellent.

I’ve also recently been making chicken gyros at home. I oven bake chicken breast in some spices, parboil then air fry some cubed new potatoes (although I sometimes don’t bother) and I get tsatziki and Greek style flatbreads (M&S ones are best). Finely dice a red onion, tomatoes and cucumber, chuck in a bit dried dill, salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice for the salad, roll it up in tin foil and it genuinely feels like having a takeaway. Without the potatoes it comes out to 52g protein, 53 carbs and 14g fat, 535 cals total, a great ‘cheat meal’ if you’re watching what you’re eating.

Another recommendation would be hot honey. There’s a few on the market now and it goes absolutely brilliantly with so many things.

Waiting on my boss coming back from Iran as he brings me a couple of my favourite foods. First are dried baby figs. I love these and while they are available in the UK (very expensive over here) for some reason the Iranian ones just taste better. Also should get a nice bag of saffron roasted pistachios, these are the dugs danglies of roasted nuts, in fact it isn't even the pistachios that do it for me, its the coating the put on before roasting them, an umami saffron taste that I will literally suck off the shells. Other mentions for Iranian fare would be Pistachio butter, a little goes a long way but it is like Worcestershire sauce, it adds something really nice to savoury dishes. Also, I wont see it because his mum isn't coming over but her tahdig is ambrosia, certainly the best rice dish I have ever eaten.

Unlikely to measure up to the real thing, but tahdig isn't too difficult to make. I use this recipe: https://thefeedfeed.com/thefeedfeed/crispy-persian-potato-and-saffron-tahdig

Make sure you have a plate bigger than your pan to flip it out on to – I have a big pizza plate solely for this purpose. The exact timing/intensity of cooking will depend on your hob and probably need a bit of fine tuning, but once you have that down it's easy and delicious.

Lidl often do a "Spanish Week" and they sell dried baby figs for £1.79/250g.
It's not something I'd normally eat but my wife gets them when they're in stock and she loves them.

Chorizo Link sausages, incredibly versatile and great in chilli, bolognaise - even better barbecued.

Healthy Boy sauces, mostly get them from Morrisons but their sweet chilli, sriracha and soy sauces are great and cheaper than Blue Dragon etc - and they come in big bottles.

Maldon sea salt in a big tub, can be used for cooking and is great to finish as well - more versatile than a fine or chunky salt and a tub lasts me about 18 months.

I have shopped in Chinese supermarkets for over twenty years, mainly in Liverpool, paid a visit on my last trip. As well as the other things I regularly buy, they do a fantastic frozen Hot & Sour Soup.

I've never used MSG.

Does it not come with a bit of a bad rep - obviously it really helps enhance flavours etc but are there not theoretical health risks that come with it, and it is of zero nutritional value (??)

How exactly do you go about using it? I've had one or two recipes that have suggested it and I've just skipped it.

Make sure you have a plate bigger than your pan to flip it out on to – I have a big pizza plate solely for this purpose. The exact timing/intensity of cooking will depend on your hob and probably need a bit of fine tuning, but once you have that down it's easy and delicious.

I can make it, and if I do say so myself, my tahdig is really good but it is not my bosses mum's, she has almost 70 years experience in cooking it and it is food of the gods, my tahdig may get classed as food of the demi-gods or some lower circuit of deities beneath those :greengrin

Lidl often do a "Spanish Week" and they sell dried baby figs for £1.79/250g.
It's not something I'd normally eat but my wife gets them when they're in stock and she loves them.

I've never used MSG.

Does it not come with a bit of a bad rep - obviously it really helps enhance flavours etc but are there not theoretical health risks that come with it, and it is of zero nutritional value (??)

How exactly do you go about using it? I've had one or two recipes that have suggested it and I've just skipped it.

Theres no actual health risk to it - some people have a sensitivity to it and if you get, say, a Chinese that uses a lot of MSG then some people can feel a bit iffy afterwards because usually with a take-away or such it contains more than normal and we tend to over-consume with take-aways. so double whammy.

Porridge satches with Scotch Bonnet chilli jam. I accidentally put a spoonful of that into my porridge this morning instead of strawberry jam.

It was bloody hot 🥵

Anyone know where I can get authentic Thai ingredients like Lemongrass, galangal, holy basil etc?

They used to do a Thai pack in my local Asda, but they stopped it. I then used to go to Mathews in Longstone but it was sometimes a hit or more often now, a miss. I’ve been to the place in Haymarket/Dalry but it’s dear and a pain to drive to/park?

Anywhere else anyone is aware of?

You get lemongrass and Thai basil in Waitrose. Pretty sure they don’t do galangal though.

Sainsbury's sell a galangal paste if there is no luck elsewhere.

Yep, I mentioned in my post although couldn’t mind the name. It’s a pain to drive to/park and it’s cash only. Looks like it’s still the best option so far as a one stop for all. Thought there was a chance there might be somewhere else handy.

I hate sweetened porridge. Often have one of Sainsbury's plain porridge pots with a good grating of pecorino cheese and fresh ground black pepper stirred into it.
