For me the game changed when Newell came on in the second half, it shows how important a player he has become, midfield is light weight, Newell is the main man in that department for me.

I thought his positional sence was awful most of the game, got the wrong side of his man all game and we were lucky they never capitalised a few times.

He's comfortable on the ball and can play out, but he will need to sort that out if he's to get better and compete for a place in the team.

Agreed! The overall team score for me was well below average. Don't let a 2-1 win convince you otherwise. We were rubbish for large parts of that game. So not many will get pass marks from me against a Championship level team.

We've got to get the midfield sorted. Today's had zero influence on the game until Newell came on. Bypassed for majority of the game, resulting in our defenders long ball to our forwards.

I know it's an old cliche, but this was a game of two half's first half was a bore fest, it all came alive in the second half, for me this was because that's when Joe Newell came on.

Totally agree. Newell was the crucial catalyst.

TBH maybe it wasn't a bad thing the crowd was so small. Although folk at the game were frustrated it wasn't ever toxic. Think that probably helped - the RR fans were there in decent numbers but they weren't as vocal as some visiting fans. Whole place lifted with the introduction of Newell then Vente.

Have to disagree with some of those ratings though.

Thought Harbottle was solid and played real well on debut. Couldn’t ask any more from him.
Megwa not quite ready for first team level - caught out of position a few times and better decision making.
La Fondre always looks creative and threatening to me. A good buy.
Thought Stevenson struggled again
Thought Hanlon was reasonably solid.
Thought Miller looked good again. Solid, reliable. Blocked a great shot on goal and gave the assist to Younan for our the goal.
Thought LJ played well too. A smart starting X1 and subbed well.

At least twice he had short pass backs to the goalie, that almost caused a goal.

No. Until now came on we had no one with the ability to take the ball in the turn. It’s a huge issue.

There was no football in frst half might give Doidge for workrate and Harbottle for no glaring errors pass marks and Campbell 2 for turning up.Rest were just poor, Second half Newell brought the game to life with his runs and passes and rest bucked up a bit but not a lot better. Newell was MOM for me and Youn finally contributed with his goal and assist. A horrible day at ER for me.

You can probably guess exactly how we played.

Midfield two wouldn't have been a problem had we got the ball into the front two or used the two best players we have out wide, but the whole team - bar the first ten minutes - seemed to be hellbent on recycling the ball backwards or inside at snail's pace then reaching a complete brain-dead zombie state from 30-45.

Not to dwell on the bad in a a ultimately good day, but it's becoming so predictable it's a total waste of 45 minutes.

To me all these young players look mechanical, no pitch personality. There’s only one or two that look like they might do something a bit different. The natural talent & skill seems to get coached out of them. It’s almost a drip feed of exactly the same player time and again.

Not really. We found it very difficult as we played 442 and regularly got outnumbered in midfield.
