We can love him again after the game but frankly during the game i hope Jeggo/Newell put him in the stand

There's no chance of cutting out the sentiment. He's a Hibs hero and we love him. He's one of my favourite ever Hibs players and he loved his time here.

I do hope Jeggo and Newell take care of him, though that's unlikely.

I hope he does for Villa what he did for Hibs in Europe - miss a penalty that means they go out

A guy who just got this club and gave 100% every time he pulled on it's jersey. Not just that but clearly a fine human being as well. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed to see a player leave Hibs as the day SJM signed for Villa, even though it was inevitable he would leave in the end, it didn't lessen my disappointment. But yeh, for two games he will be an opposition player trying his best to put my club out of Europe and I certainly wont be cheering him onto or off the park. But sentimental over SJM ..... how can you not be? ..... There will always be a part of him that belongs to Hibs.

I think it’s a balancing act.

We shouldn’t ignore the fact that SJM is a club legend but at the same time, he shouldn’t dominate the build up to both games.

I personally think it’s great that we will see him again, he absolutely should give him the best reception possible at ER and VP but get stuck into everyone of their players, SJM included during the 90 mins…as we all know, he’ll get stuck into us.

I think the sentiment is also based on our chances of victory - we are massive, massive underdogs. They have spent over £50m on Diaby this summer. That's one player for more than ever transfer fee ever paid in our history. If this was a few years down the line and he was back in Scotland playing for say Aberdeen, I suspect fans views would shift slightly.

I also don't think fans being sentimental is a problem. The players won't give a ****, and that's the main thing.

This is pretty much how I feel. A very warm welcome back before the game, pelters during it, then resume love-in at FT.

No chance.

He is one of the few Scottish Cup winners we have and repeatedly in interviews says only good things about Hibs.

When the whistle blows he is part of the opposition and naturally, I hope things don’t go his way, but he still deserves a friendly, warm welcome and respect.

Yes, he does. Hibs Legend and on his way to becoming a Scotland Legend and fully deserves our respect and admiration. This is rare game where the occasion trumps the result.

I remember being pretty stunned when some of our other cup winners got booed by (some) Hibs fans - surely nobody is going to do that for SJM? You don't have to be 'sentimental' if you don't want to but booing that guy would be cringe of the century.

Exactly. A huge part of that cup winning side that will go down in Hibs history.During the game I hope our midfield turn them over and he has a stinker. But before the game I'm going to show him the love he deserves.

Nah. Absolutely love that man unconditionally.Yup, this. He helped give me the best day so far - bar none - of my forty odd years of supporting Hibernian. Almost certainly the best day I ever will have of supporting this club. More than that he's a player with the kind of swash buckle that Hibs should be in my mind - and he's a top human being too. And he clearly has a huge affection for us. I'll be radiating love to him before and after the game and hoping that he has a very quiet 90 minutes in between.

Do that really need to be said?I expect he will applaud the stands at one point or another during the game - potentially at K.O - and get a well deserved electric reception. That's about as far as it will go, adds a bit of interest to the game and keep a good atmosphere between both sets of fans.

I full heartedly hope that at some point, whether it's before, after or during the game, everyone in ER is singing the SJM song. The man deserves a glorious homecoming, and i don't think it would harm our chances of seeing him back at ER one day in hibs colours.

Also think we could kill him with kindness, in terms of his performance.

Aye if folk are thinking that giving him it tight for 90 minutes will hamper his performance then they probably don't understand the mindset of players like him.

He was a big hero for us, but how would we feel if he was returning to Easter Road playing for Celtic, or god forbid the Rangers? He wouldn't be as much of a hero I reckon.

Win lose or draw I will clap him off the pitch. A special player who loves our club to bits. The game will be very special for John. Might be a wise decision for Villa to use him sparingly over the 2 legs.

Off the top off my head, Keatings, Bartley, Fyvie and Fontaine have all come back to ER and received applause at varying stages of the game. As they should.

Think there is potential for the reception McGinn gets to be a bit OTT though. Before/after the game he should absolutely get a good reception but once the whistle goes that should be it.

Fans will, rightly in my opinion, show a lot of love to SJM before and after the game. I really don’t see our fans cheering him during the game so don’t think anyone needs to worry about that.

SJM will be a legend at our club forever for the cup win but also the 110% effort he put in every week. Don’t see why people shouldn’t let him know he is still loved by all at ER.

He’ll rightly get a great reception pre and probably post match, but I doubt it will continue through the game. Remember the type of player he is, he’ll be flying into 50/50 challenges - and loving it; our fans won’t be cheering that they’ll be roaring encouragement to the Hibs players.

I will show my appreciation to a great hibs player, and a great guy, when at easter road, he was always available to the fans for photoes, and often stayed and chatted, just when we needed a bit extra, he drove us forward in 2016, to win the cup.
Since leaving, he has promoted our club, to all the aston villa fans many times, saying his greatest moment in football was our cup win.
However during both 90 minutes i will be supporting hibs not John.
I have no problem signing his name multiple times before and after both games, in a drunken stupor.

A player who I loved to watch - he has given his all whether for St Mirren / Hibs / Villa / Scotland.Im not sure He has as much affinity with us as we have with him... and thats not a criticism, but because his character and personality is such that he will never be half hearted and will fight for team & team mates where ever he plays.Very glad he did not leave to INFIRM and I think that helps his status. He won't be wearing the Green & White (or Purple) in these games so no support from me.Hope he has a mare in games against us (gets booked early so he cant be himself) and gets Megged by Joe..And also hope he is brilliant when Autumn Scotland matches come around
