I know we should be trying to win both games, and we will be, but if you had to prioritise one, what would you choose;
League points or qualifying for the next round in Europe?

Europe for the excitement/glamour/cash boost (if we get through to face Villa). But don't want to develop a losing habit in the league. I remember way back in 1985 we lost our first six league games but the fact we were winning in style every midweek as we reached the Skol Cup final kind of obscured that.

Interestingly, the glorious Albert Kidd game came at the end of the 85/86 season which started with hertz losing 5 of their first 9 league games only winning 2 (one against us obvs).
Turns out they have a point when they blame St Mirren.
Not only did Celtc hammer them on the last day of the season to capitalise on Kidd's siccess, they beat hertz 6-2 in the second game.

Europe, going by last years prize money table we've just scooped about 350,000 in prize money for coming through the 2nd Qualifying round and stand to collect 550,000 if we get past the swiss mob. Thats a decent signing right there. Should we get through and somehow knock Villa out thats another 750,000 added to the pot. Qualification to the group stages is worth just under 3m. These figures have bound to have increased slightly for the 23/24 season though. What dreams are made of.

It's not cumulative, it's single payments depending on when you exit. We get 100,000 for each round we play. Then a set bonus depending on when we drop out; 550k if we lose to Luzern or 750k if we lose to Villa. Unfortunately it's not added up per round. It's just when you go out.

Also very high costs have to be deducted from that figure. It is still good money for us, but the real benefit is reaching the group stages. In that respect league points are very valuable, with 3rd getting us into the Europa group stages. Its Europe for me but only just.

If we are set to scoop €750,000 if we get through to play villa then I will take that over 3 points on Sunday.

100%. If we get knocked out by Villa the entire ECL campaign will have been worth just over 1millon in prize money alone. That's a great return for us, especially when 5th place doesn't always get Europe.

If Hibs and Rangers both get through this round then that should be enough to preserve our coefficient and keep us above the Swiss. Are we not in danger of losing a European place soon?

Turkey & Austria are catching us too. We won't lose any places this season, but good chance we slip out the top 10 and possibly down to 15th in coefficient for 24/25. One of Scotland's best years points wise (19/20) falls off our 5 year points total used to determine our position in coefficient table, end of this season, replaced by however many points we all get in Europe this year.
Dropping out the top 10 means no teams in Scotland get guaranteed group stage football.

Europe. If we lose to Motherwell we have the rest of the season to claw it back. Lose on Thursday we're out. No brainer. Obviously preferably both.

Indeed. We had the 7th best coefficient in 2019-2020. As it stands right now we're in 14th place for next years league. Turkey are on fire, but we're holding our own against Austria. I'd say we need to amass about 7 points to avoid falling out of the 5 Euro places in the near future

Europe I think for me. We have time to play catch up in the league. The money on offer in Europe is a great and the chance to play Villa something that might not come round again for a while.
Don't get me wrong, I want Hibs to win every game, but that's not going to happen. The one where I have the biggest dilemma is the League Cup. If we beat Luzern we're fighting on three fronts. The LC is a trophy we should be looking to win, but if still in Europe I fear LJ will use it as a chance to give game time to some fringe players and that could backfire against Raith. If he doesn't and puts out the first team and we suffer some injuries, he gets dogs abuse dor not changing the team! Interesting few weeks ahead

Both obviously, but if I had to make a choice it would be Europe.
There are 36 games left in the league to make up any dropped points but only one game between European progress or exit.
Edit - we can do both. Win tomorrow in the league and then draw in Europe :D

Both. High time LJ and this Hibs team started to win a few back to back games. Too often their performances go from the depths of StM to the highs of Thursday night. That's got to be attitude and application.

I'd be interested to know what's the actual profit from Europe after you've taken out all the hiring of hotels planes etc
Europe in this case. The opportunity to test ourselves against an English Premier League team doesn't come around very often, whereas a loss at Fir Park will be forgotten about in a month.

Europe but I'm expecting nothing better than a draw tomorrow. That was a leg bursting 90 across the majority of the first team and we've already seen what that does versus The Buddies. Draw or lose the Johnson out threads will be all up at the top of the forum pages again.

Hearts drew their first game of that season at home against Celtic also - Paul McStay equalised in injury time.
So for all the drama of the final minutes of the last day of the season, their first two games of the season were where much of the damage was done.

Ask the board :greengrin
An extra 200,000 Euros in prize money if we go out to Villa. But if Hibs charge £30 for an adult ticket and £20 for kids and OAPs for this and it sells out that could be another 400,000 quid. Chuck in TV money, hospitality and advertising and we could end up clearing about £600,000 from that one game.
Chuck in the 100/1 shot that we might actually win the tie and we're talking about millions.
Not a bad trade off for a few dropped points that we could potentially make up later. Going by last season a bad run isn't usually terminal, just ask Aberdeen.

You can never make up points lost in the league. The opportunity is gone. We have to try and win both games while having an eye on Europe when we play Motherwell while

We need to get points on the board tomorrow after last weeks debacle. Hopefully Thursday night has given them a big boost rather than taken too much out of them.
Qualifying on Thursday massive though. Getting to the group stage was always going to be difficult but if we can beat a decent standard of opposition then get the big glamour tie, thats the next best thing and well have made a few quid from it all.
