View Full Version : Anyone staying in Zurich on the Wednesday night?

I guess most will be staying in Luzern or maybe Basel the night before, but for anyone staying in the middle on 16th, I would be able to book a few tables(or more depending on numbers) at my local, called Kennedys (https://www.kennedys.ch/) very close to the train station where, unless they have some big game on that night we might be able to get some Hibs tunes on the jukebox etc.

This wouldn't be a Blackpoolesque entire pub takeover, unless I've misjudged the numbers staying in Zurich, but planning in advance is always a good idea so if you're around on the Wednesday evening and interested in a highly unofficial meetup, let me know and I can get talking to the general manager of the pub who's a good mate

Why you guys staying in Basel if flying to Zurich? Would it not have just been easier to stay in Zurich? Or did you mean to say Lucerne instead of Basel?:hmmm:

We were in that hotel but switched to the Hotel City Inn just round the corner as it was a better deal. We will be in Basel, I'd say around 7:30, dump bags then straight out for a peeve.

Hotel was booked first due to price and that we may have just driven over if we couldn't get reasonable flights.

Ahem. Brutal. Anywhere between about 7.5 - 9.5 CHF a pint. Swiss stuff (Feldschlösschen, Eichhof, Calanda etc) will be at the less ruinous end of that scale, import stuff at the upper end.

Carry out prices from supermarkets are far more reasonable but if the masses are congregating in Luzern's Bars that's where you want to be really.

Thanks mate. Not great prices really, but not really really bad!

Hopefully it’ll be a good trip.

Do they have ciders generally?

What prices are they if so?

Abd spirits?

Paid £6.60 for a pint in Glasgow City Centre on Saturday night.

The difference between us and the most expensive drinking places in Europe gets less with each passing week.

Ciders yes, magners/bulmers in expat pubs you can also get a drink called Möst which is basically more classic alcoholic apple juice.

Spirits is where things get properly pricey because the headline price in the menu generally won't include mixer.

Expect to be paying circa 14-17 CHF for a spirit of mixer but I think maybe the default measure might be bigger than at home but don't quote me on that

This is true, the lower end of the Swiss scale isn't b that far removed from the upper end of the UK scale these days, certainly for beer

English and Irish pubs are in general the most expensive pubs / restaurants in Switzerland because of all the imported beer. Cheapest beer will always be the 'local' one.
If you are lucky, Pickwick Pub will make a special offer with a cheaper beer. They did this before for football fans. They are used to loads of footy fans and always host the away fans for any National team or FCL opponents.
There's also a cosy Irish Pub called Shamrock, quite close to the fan zone with pickwick pub. They usually have live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings / nights.
If you wanna have proper local beer, try the Rathausbrauerei (they brew the stuff right in the building, you sit next to some tanks), Stadtkeller or Bierliebe. All quite pricy, but you get good beer. At Rathausbrauerei you can also buy a 15 L barrel for 190 Francs for bigger groups. Stadtkeller have a pipeline which runs directly from the Rathausbrauerei to their spot in the middle of old town.

Else: Try some more local restaurants, where beer is a bit less expensive than at the tourist hotspots. Then, drinking in public is allowed and totally fine. Buy your beer or spirits at a Coop, Lidl or Denner and sit at the river or lake banks.
Generally, the local police will try to separate home and away fans and gather away fans in the old town part.

If the weather is nice and hot, it will also be possible to have a swim at one of the beaches at Ufschötti, Lido or Lidowiese.

Excuse the ignorance Paul mate, but that means gluten free right?
If so, maybe Pickwick's might have a token gluten free beer in bottles or draft but I wouldn't hang my hat on that.

Best bet is probably the big co-op or drinks of the world that are downstairs in Luzern Bahnhof. I'm quite possibly going to Luzern with the family on Sunday, maybe I'll need to pop in to Pickwick's for a pint in the name of research.....

Yeah that’s right mate!
I’m sure I’ll be grand, and to be honest I’ll likely be stocking up from a supermarket nearby to keep the costs down, just don’t fancy paying top dollar for imported Irish or English ciders.
Loads of GF options in most countries I’ve been to for drinks and food and I imagine Switzerland will be the same.
Had a look and loads of restaurants and pizza places offering gf food, but not much mention of gf beer anywhere.
Either way I’ll manage to get tanked up 😂

I guess they'll have GF beer at the bars. Yet will be bottled.
Else: Try Coop or "Drinks of the world" in the main station shopping area. DotW have plenty of choice in international beer. All in cans or bottles. But they are a bit more pricy than at the regular Coop or Denner supermarkets.

Gonna break my heart, still 1.25p a pint at my local.

68CHF per person, booked on the SSB website. 👍
We plan to head down on either the 11.03 or 12.03 train I think

Will be making a preliminary table booking later on for this, based on this thread about 8-10 could/will be in attendance, hopefully a few more will come across the pub as obviously not all the Hibs world is a .net member.

www.kennedys.ch Freischützgasse 14, all welcome 👍.

I'll book the table from 19h30, the earliest I'll realistically be there

From what I’ve seen it depends on the bar. Some close at 10 and some open to 2am midweek in the new town area.

Yeah, places open after about half 11/midnight will either be tending more towards clubs or more "characterful" bars, especially midweek, assuming Luzern and Zurich are comparable in this regard but perhaps our new resident Luzern fan can advise further

Question to local guys. With it being Wed and Thurs what time are we looking at Bars closing in lucern. Most Restaurants / Bars will close at midnight or 0:30 am.Still, there are some night clubs and late bars. Nothing too fancy though: Roadhouse (right next to the train station): open until 4 am --> this is the most obvious choice. On weekends they close at 6 or 7 I think. - Franky's (smoker), Down Town (Heavy Metal / Hard Rock bar, smoker) or Bar 59 usually close at 2.30-ish - Raviolibar and Zentralbar are usually open until 1.30 amOther night clubs: Madeleine or Kegelbahn. If anyone asks them, Anfield Pub or Shamrock Pub might open late as well. Generally there's much more in Zürich of course.

Arrive into the airport but already been delayed an hour so won’t arrive til about 9.30pm from Gatwick so by the time we get out and to hotel there’s likely no point heading there. We are in ibis budget west

Back in the days of my studies in Zurich, 'Nelson Pub' used to be open until 2am during weekdays. Might still be the same I guess.

Ok, keep in touch just in case. Your hotel is just round the corner from Steinfels Brauerai where they make their own beer and Les Halles, both open until midnight.

Also Big Ben pub, open until 1

It remains the pub of last resort until the wee hours. Then upstairs to Lady Hamilton's complete with sticky floors.
