After giving it a lot of thought, I've decided not to offer up 'This is how it feels' this season.

There are a number of reasons why, including health and personal, plus I don't think I'll be able to attend/watch every match.

It's been a blast doing it though and I'll miss it but thanks to everyone who contributed to that thread over the past couple of years.

Real shame. Always a reliable, measured and interesting analysis of each game.

It's been great to read a write-up like yours, amongst a sea of knee jerk reactions (justifiably on many occasion to be fair).

Thanks Jonnyboy
Your reports were always interesting, an accurate review of the game and worth reading - recently almost the only contributions worth reading on an increasingly depressing forum.
Hope your health improves and as I’m sure you will forever remain a “Hibee till the day you die”

Sorry to hear that Johnny. I gave up my season ticket about 10 years ago and latterly read your reports for each game. That was my only contact with Hibs. Your honest and fair reports rekindled my interest and I bought a season ticket for this year. So thanks for keeping me engaged with the Hibs during my self imposed exile.
I hope your health improves and I do empathise with the difficulties of writing up match reports after a dismal 90 minutes of football. Thank you for what you did and I hope you enjoy the coming season.
All the best.

I’m sure I like many will mourn this news- it’s my go to place after a result to get perspective regardless of whether I’ve attended or not to get a measured view of how things when through the eyes of someone more learned about football than me and with an ability to distill it down and articulate it in a way I never could. To do all this within a such a short timeframe after a game is a truly awesome feat and a measure of the honed skill of a craftsman.

I salute your sustained efforts. A truly magnificent selfless contribution of one Hibee to countless Hibees around the globe. A sight to behold.

Really sorry to hear this news Johnny Boy The First half could be summed up Dug *****
Better second half and both goals came from passing on the deck
Why we then resorted to high balls is beyond me

Why we allowed the cross in for thier third was bad enough. But for thier smallest forwardco getting on between our two defenders and score is just not acceptable

Can't ever recall being annoyed at anything in your reports JB. Maybe the very occasional minor disagreement on MoM or something irrelevant but nowt of any significance. And it was always good to read a long post with all the apostrophe's in the right place.

On days when the Hibees fail to bring joy,
Best stay away from Hibs net 'til Jonnyboy,
posts his match report This Is How It Feels,
the red mist abates and we start to heal,
with his sensible prose, the voice of reason,
but alas JB has done his last season.
As many have said, he'll be a huge miss,
A big hole in .net, nay a massive abyss,
So someone is needed to fill big shoes,
and report on the Hibees, win, draw, or lose,
Can anyone out there step up to the plate,
And take on the mantle of .net's best mate.

Always enjoyed your take on the games, both on here and back in the days of the fanzine, and more often than not I wouldn’t find much within your musings to argue against.

I hope your health can be such that you can still get to see Hibs as much as possible. As a familiar face at away games and having been sat close to you on many occasions I’ve never actually felt it appropriate to say hello!

I’ve certainly appreciated your pragmatic writings over the years which were always a bit of respite from the extremities favoured on social media today.

In an era where there are a thousand views posted online in a range going from from the eloquent and accurate to the ignorant and idiotic, it is sad to see this go. I held it in the same ‘must read’ regard as in earlier times I did when waiting outside the local newsagent for the pink news to arrive.

The quality of the main stream and local media’s offerings has plummeted to the depths where I no longer bother with them. It means my general interest in football other than Hibs and knowledge of other teams and players is minimal. Jonnyboy’s report (with its fair and acceptable level of bias😄) and the discussion it generated gave a reliable but challenging view of the fortunes of my team.

Best wishes to its author who certainly leaves big boots for anyone looking to fill them.

Had the honour of stepping in for JB to do one TIHIF match report - one! - and it’s a lot of work! To do this for many seasons in a row is some accomplishment, especially as they were so well written and timely, often published here within a few hours of the final whistle.

Enjoy your ‘retirement’ !

I will miss these match reports which were always interesting, insightful and enjoyed by many on this forum. It was always good to get an attending fan’s perspective.
Thank you Jonnyboy. Best wishes to you and yours and stay safe.

I’ll join in with everyone else in saying that the match reports will be missed it was always one of the first threads that I checked when getting home from the match as such I would like to thank you for a lot of enjoyment over the last few seasons but wanting to relax after a game without having to write a review I can understand, Thanks for everything

Jonny, just wanted to add to the countless posters on the thread and wish you all the best.

The post-match summaries were always essential reading and it was a rare day when I disagreed with anything said. Fair play to you for taking the time to do it.

Hope you're keeping well and I'll see you in the East.

'This is how it feels' will be sorely missed by many.

Thank you for your service Johnnyboy. I know my late father enjoyed reading your reports too.

Would you consider doing an occasional guest report for special occasions or when the feeling grabs you. I know it would be dearly appreciated.

I remember when The Pink stopped being printed, I was genuinely sad, it was an essential part of my Saturday matchday ritual, whether I queued outside my newsagent waiting for the van to arrive or picked it up in a pub on Easter Rd. It provided something we all craved, an unbiased report from someone who understood the club and the fans.
Your reports were a perfect substitute for the beloved Pink and will be sorely missed.
Wishing you all the best JB and thanks for your efforts.

I have to confess I am both overwhelmed and genuinely humbled by all of the kind responses to my original post. I'd love to respond to every one of them in turn but that would make this post pretty messy!

As I said in my OP, part of the reason I looked to stop doing TIHIF was my health situation but I've reason to feel that may improve in the coming weeks and having agreed as much with the Admin Team I have offered to provide a TIHIF on an as and when arrangement. I know I won't be at every game but will endeavour to do as many as I can for those games I will attend. Thankfully, Admin have agreed so I'll be back in the saddle again. The truth is, I really enjoy writing TIHIF and the encouragement you have all provided in this thread has reignited my enthusiasm.

It looks like my first opportunity to start up will be the home game against Raith Rovers and I'm already looking forward to it.

Thank you all again for your support, it means a great deal to me and effectively formed the catalyst for me starting up again.

Even when you've been at the game, if you don't feel like doing a report, please don't feel obliged to do one.

I always read them and whilst I've sometimes posted a thank you for the report, I'm guilty of not always doing so. From now on I'll aim to at least give a 👍 to acknowledge I've read and enjoyed it.

First of all it is wonderful to learn that your health is likely to improve and you will hopefully be feeling better in the short term. The responses from all posters are well deserved and I'm delighted that they have proved to be a tonic and lifted your spirits to get back in the saddle. Like everyone I always looked out for your TIHIF posts and the thought that they would no longer be on .net was a blow. Great stuff.

Can TIHIF be turned into a collaborative effort, with others filling in for JB as necessary?

I’m unlikely to be at many matches this season so I can’t be much help but would be very willing to volunteer when possible.

Obviously matching the quality of JB’s reports will be a tough ask.

A true highlight of every match was, for me, that it was not over until I had read JB,s thoughts on the game. Always accurate and written from the heart much appreciated by me and how I miss them

Great just great news to hear JB - hope you maje quick progress with your health recovery in the coming weeks 🙏🤞
