The European Ryder Cup team is beginning to take shape, with six automatic slots determined by the World and European rankings and six Captain picks.
The six automatic picks at the moment (25th July) are:
European List
1. Rory McIlroy – 4033.5pts
2. Jon Rahm – 3417.23
3. Robert MacIntyre – 1743.57
World List
1. Jon Rahm – 388.57pts
2. Rory McIlroy – 364.59
3. Viktor Hovland – 265.75
4. Tyrrell Hatton – 195.51
5. Tommy Fleetwood – 158.33
Just outside the automatic picks are Yannick Paul, Adrian Meronk, Matt Fitzpatrick (9th World Ranking), Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka and Justin Rose.
You would think that the Europe team would be made up from the twelve named above, albeit still time for one or more new entrants.

McIlroy, Rahm, Fitzpatrick, Hatton, Fleetwood, Lowry, Hovland, Straka and Rose I would imagine are locked in one way or the other. Sadly the other three look like weak links whoever is picked and it's going to be a big job for those nine to carry home whoever else is in the team, even with home advantage.

Feels a bit like momentum has swung towards Europe lately.
The last Ryder Cup was a bit of a pasting and the Americans looked really strong for the foreseeable future but they've been hit by LIV and a few of their key players being out of form.
On the other side, some Europeans have been playing some great stuff and home advantage always counts for a lot during the Ryder Cup. The weaker end of the European team will probably cause some folk some concern but there always seems to be a hero who can emerge and scrape an unlikely and invaluable point or two.
I've watched the Italian Open on this course over the past few years and it shaping up to be an absolute cracker imo - can't wait.

Two tournaments to go - Czech Masters then European Masters and Bob Mac is still holding on to 3rd automatic spot, but with Paul, Meronk, Perez and Hojgaard snapping at his heels. Not sure what points are up for grabs at these two tournies but hopefully if he drops out of the top three over the next two weeks his previous win at Marco Simone will see him picked. Just hope he doesn't bomb at both.

Young and burns would go as the two rookies (I don't think Burns has played).
Our bottom end looks less impressive but who knows. Home soil and the top end might carry us.

Close, but Young misses out with Thomas picked. Harsh on Young. On form that's a terrible choice. Youngs driving would make him hard to beat in a 4 ball or singles.
Thomas form has been awful but you have to think Johnson has gone for the experience and the JT/Speith/Fowler mates act.
Let's get them smashed!

That's a pretty solid looking European team.
The golf was great viewing on Friday afternoon. Crans Sur Sierre is a cracking venue anyway but it felt a bit surreal and totally nerve wracking watching Bob McIntyre scrambling to make the cut knowing his Ryder Cup dreams might be hanging on it.

Suppose Ludvig Aberg winning in Switzerland changed things. Meronk may have been a better option than Lowry and Rose, but Donald has obviously gone for experience with those two.

Betting about right but id say Europe are massively understated,
USA not won in Europe since Valhalla 2008,
9 of USA team wont have played competive tourney golf for 5 weeks when the ryder cup starts,
A lot of folk wont have heard of Aberg but he is unreal, great asset to have on the team and doesnt seem phased by anything. Played very well at wentworth at weekend.
Hovland won the fed ex and in exceptional form.
Rahm and McIlroy hugely experienced and also in amazing form.
European team met up at Marco Simone course a couple of weeks ago to practice and bonding session, great prep that went very well and no other euro team has done this before so they will be familiar with the course and surroundings when they arrive next week..
All the euro team played wentworth at the weekend and were grouped together Thursday and Friday, great preperation.
I think Europe are quietly going about there prep much better than USA and Europe would be my slight favs.
Heading over for it, fly over Thursday, tickets for the course on Friday and kick about Rome then Naples for the weekend.
Kilts on so hoping Bob Mac plays morning and afternoon sessions on Friday, which is unlikely unfortunately, probably just play 1 of the sessions.

I must admit, Europe look to be the value to me.
Home advantage is huge and their preparation looks meticulous, with lots of players in very good form.
Obviously the Americans have a lot of talent but they've been hit harder by the LIV effect, must surely be concerned about Thomas' form and there seems to be a wee air of complacency about their preparation.

We’ll soon find out but Europe would have to be around 2/1 before I considered them close to value. I think most expect it to be close and should be great viewing - but I just have a hunch that USA will take it without too much trouble this time.
And they’ll be quite comfortable with JT if he plays like he did this weekend passed.

Just 1 person drives and its alternate shot. That's why its important to work out whose driving on which holes or teeing off on par 3's etc.
Someone will tee off on all odd holes and the playing partner tees off on even numbered holes.

Max Homa had excellent record in the recent presidents cup which is like Ryder cup so good value for top USA player.

I'll obviously be hoping that Bob McIntyre plays well in the games he plays in but I still can't help feeling that he's the weakest player in the team and I would have selected Meronk before him.
However he is in the team on merit and nobody can deny that that's a fact.

He went through a great run though and extremely unlucky not to win Scottish Open. Rory birdieing last 2 was just ridiculous.
He qualified automatically on merit, if meronk should have been in the team ahead of anyone it would be Hjoggard.
Bobs short game is as good as anyone on the Euro tour, hopefully a bit fire in his belly and fight brings out the best of him in matchplay.
Aberg is unbelievable, super star of the future. So calm for only having been pro a few months. Another that some folk might not be familiar with but could be a massive asset to the euro team.

Bob's also won a tournament on this course as well as having put in respectable matchplay performances in the US in the past, I'm sure I remember him beating DJ in one a couple of years back.
I'd have probably picked Meronk over Hojgaard (mainly due to the fact the Meronk has won a few times and won on this course this year) but tbh there's not much in it.
There's often room for an unheralded European hero performing above expectation in this event and I wouldn't put it past anyone on that European team.

His biggest problem this year has been a few big numbers at daft moments. He still makes tons of birdies. I think he will be just fine and actually thrive in the team environment. As you said he’s there on merit. It would have been Meronk over Hojgaard for me but we go with who we have.

Yup. In his off time he has been known to turn out for Oban Celtic. His old man trains them.
Talented family with the two cousins at Hibs.

It’s interesting to watch, good partners will work to set each other up for the next shot, whether that’s accounting for players who fade or draw the ball, what their partner’s strengths or favoured clubs are, how they like putting in particular situations, etc

Great finish from Europe, into a commanding position already. The star names on the team are really pulling out the stops and helping to mask that bit of depth of quality that's lacking down the order. Rahm, Fitzpatrick and Hovland in particular were outstanding. Rose digging out another half point at the end after MacIntyre seemed to lose his way.
Great to get everyone a run out today but you've got to think the Americans are going to come out fighting tomorrow. Best strategy would be to try and get as many of the big names and major winners on the team out for both sessions and try to push back against any US fightback. Having given the likes of MacIntyre and Hojgaard a go today I'd sit them down for tomorrow and go all out with the big guns.

I'd like to think that the European players might actually say something or gesture to the crowd to cut out the p*** ('get in the water' , etc) , but they seem to be fine with it. I'd alsolike to think the crowd could create an intimidating atmosphere without resorting to crap chat like that.
Mcilroy isn't getting the Nicklaus Jacklin award anyway! [emoji16]

Never seen many Union Jack's or English flags in the crowds. Seen plenty Saltires.

Never seen many Union Jack's or English flags in the crowds. Seen plenty Saltires.Wasn't aware or concentrating on flags at all. But that wouldn't necessarily surprise me as bringing a Union Flag to an event where Europe is competing as a whole probably wouldn't be the smartest move these days. Sadly it's become a bit of a divisive symbol now.
I thought of saying 'British accents' in my post above, but nobody really says that. I'd be equally, if not more, embarrassed if they were Scottish accents.

Only a matter of time before we get "xxxx you're a wanchor" a la football. For me anyway, it spoils the viewing especially in the afternoon once the beer is in their bellies.

Yep, nothing wrong with the Americans giving a bit back at a golf event which has taken on more of a football-style vibe. McIlroy has lost the plot a bit tonight.
There was no need for the caddie to be on the green and in Rory's way and trying to stare him out prior to a huge putt. Ridiculous behaviour by the caddy imo and deserved to be called out for it. No doubt a reaction to getting their asses handed to them in the first few sessions. Hopefully Europe finish the job off.

He looked a different player after he holed his first real putt.
They've put him out 12th tomorrow but hopefully he'll win a point regardless although I think Clarke will be hard to beat.
It'll be won early.

Thought he was dreadful over the two days to be honest. Was carried to a point and a half by Rose. At least he had that one moment with the bunker shot and putt though to leave some kind of positive mark on the event. That they've hidden him at 12 in the order today, well away from the action, tells it's own story. Unless things go very badly wrong it should be long over before his match finishes up.

I was meaning him having a go at another US caddy in the car park later in the evening.

We came close to that at the Open with some of the stuff being shouted at Harman by moronic Fleetwood fans.
I agree with you that the fans are a turn-off when it comes to watching the Ryder Cup.

Hoping the US can take it to the wire to ramp up the tension. Part of me would also like to see some of the more dorkish European fans made to sweat.

I'll obviously be hoping that Bob McIntyre plays well in the games he plays in but I still can't help feeling that he's the weakest player in the team and I would have selected Meronk before him.
However he is in the team on merit and nobody can deny that that's a fact.
It will be bacon roll and coffee time for me at 6.30am on Friday - I'm really looking forward to the big clash.

Aye he certainly was the weak link [emoji1787] 2.5 points out of 3Tbf it wasn't an unpopular opinion.
Donald obviously had doubts too. Bob looked like a lost boy in the Friday afternoon session and relied heavily on Rose. To his credit, in the Saturday afternoon session he turned a wobbly start around and contributed to Europe's only point.
He won his match impressively on the Sunday.
He'll hopefully go on to show how good a player he is at the next level and be a ryder cup contributor in years to come.
It's about time we had a Scot at the top table again.
