To be fair, everyone had great strips back then. Simpler times before commercialism was ramped up and took over. I often wonder what the older fans thought of the Tornadoes strip at the time - did they pass it off as modern nonsense and yearn for a return to the rugby style strips of the 40’ & 50’s I wonder?!

Nope not a fan of the heavy rugby type tops like playing football wearing gloves

The 1972/73 strip was a thing of beauty

I was talking to my Uncle, a massive hibby who took me to my first ever hibs game in mid 70s. Sadly he is very poorly with advanced dementia (he is in a care home) but we can always have a good chat about hibs and we were talking about strips and no surprise he loved the old original green with white sleeves such as the strips mentioned in the op

We were discussing purple and he said he liked the purple strip we wore in the 70s too, I have no recollection of us wearing a purple strip in the 70s, I remember 80s onwards, was there one, without sponsors etc ?

Your uncle's memory is good for that recollection.
And i agree with him on his favourite Hibs top.

In Sept 1972 v Sporting Lisbon,European Cup Winners Cup.
Our first, iirc, wearing an all purple kit during the 70s,was for the away game,as Sporting also play in Green and White.
There is a bigger story around the Colour purple (no! not the movie!)
It was said/rumoured at the time,to be our Chairman's (Tom Hart)wish/thoughts that it (purple) could be our primary colour.
But that is another story !!

The Bukta away top.
I agree on the Bukta sponsored purple away kit.
The top against Sporting in 1972 had no sponsors name on the front.
Bukta became our first ever strip sponsor between 1977-80.
Another first for Hibs !!
George Best during 1979 season wore the Bukta sponsored strip.

An avid collector of all iconic football strips would want that one !!
Bukta Hibs top/s that is .... and George's Hibs tops !!!

Mick, was the away game to Sporting an all purple kit?

I thought it was just the same as the home strip but simply replacing green with purple.

Can't say I've seen any pictures o the game in Lisbon.

My recollection was that the purple strip at that time had white sleeves (sure I bought one at Thompson Sports, back then) it was Sheila Hart's (Tom's wife)idea and the official colour was described as 'African Voilet'!

My first Hibs strip. Classic, thing of beauty (as you say) and worn by a Hibs team that time and again destroyed opponents with fast attacking skillful football.

Someone will find clip/photo of the game in Lisbon . But Purple top nonetheless.
I didnt mention it, but you are 100% on Mrs Hart's "influence" on Tom and club colours.
The directors box in the old stand was painted purple .(finished on time!)
Sheila could teach the Budgie a thing or two !!
Sheila also wrote lyrics on the Turnbulls Tornadoes single.(b side)

African Violet :greengrin
The team could have ran out to the tunes of Deep Purple or The Move :greengrin

On Thomson sports shops
Back in the sixties, and maybe even before, if a player needed new boots during the season, he was given a "chitty" for Thomsons to go and pick a pair.Hibs had an account with Thomsons.
True !

Did Holyrood high school not have an all purple kit.
I was given an all purple kit for a Xmas present. Took a bit of stick for wearing purple.

I think they did, also in the early seventies, the then Buchanan Hotel on Leith Links had a team which played in all purple, I know this because my brother played for them, I was a 'ballboy' and my Mum washed the strips! Regarding the Sporting game, never seen a photo, but I'm sure Pat Stanton told me it was purple/white sleeves, also mentioned it was Hibs best European performance in his time.

One of my mates, sadly now deceased, chose to support Hibs solely on the basis of loving that particular strip.

The purple with white sleeves was always my favourite as a kid. I'm surprised the design has never been reused as a 2nd strip since its initial use in the 70's.

Said it on another thread, that purple top was the first Hibs top I ever owned, it was simply a mirror of the home strip and it was beautiful .. if hibs brought out a version of it now I'm willing to bet it would sell like hot cakes.

I understand they have to mess with the strip a bit because you need different versions so its obvious folk have the most up to date strip. But pretty well every year its the socks that do my bloody head in .... The green with white turnovers is simply classic and yet year after year the socks are horrible, not least this years.

All white or all green top

Hibs have become synonymous with the green with white sleeves and IMO we should retain it for our 150th, I'll fight anybody who doesn't agree it's one of the nicest strips in world football :greengrin. The absolute classic 1970s kit in green for home and in purple for away.

We can have a white 3rd strip with simply the harp on it as a nod to our original strip .... I'm sure it would sell very well. In fact that could be the season where more folk than usual buy more than one top.

On that note. On the Hearts podcast I mentioned on another thread they were saying there's a rumour going around that for their 150th the Yams could be bringing out a red white and blue hooped top in a nod to their original colours :faf:
