Three separate incidents early morning. Three dead, four ran over and three stabbed. Driver of a van was shot at by armed police, tasered and arrested on suspicion of murder. Man was described by eye-witness as 'black with dreadlocks', he is 31.
Full tram network stopped, no buses and several roads around city cordoned off. There is a separate incident 3m away of a tram being derailed. There are purple uniformed National Inter-Agency Liaison Officers (for serious crimes) on the streets. Police: 'looks like terrorism' (not confirmed).
Welcome to Nottingham.
Welcome to Nottingham.
Not much of a Welcome to Nottingham!
Sounds horrendous.

Nottingham used to be a great place to live, not so much these days. The city centre has been a bit 'challenged' for years. Thankfully, I don't live there and wouldn't.
The city has always had it's slightly wild side, lots of gangs like you might expect. This seems different though, quite random. The guy was driving at people in the street at something like 5am amidst stabbings, just outside the city centre. He then came right into the centre of the city being pursued and just randomly drove at people going in the street going to work etc.
Nearly always I'd say it was drugs/turf wars but this appears different. It's scattered around different areas. There's also the matter of a city tram being derailed which nobody seems to be talking about at the moment. There's something diffrent about this set of incidents.

Sorry to hear that, mate.

Find that so sad. I've worked at University of Nottingham with many students. The Student Union was to have its Graduation Ball tonight but of course that has been cancelled as the students stand in support of their fellow students. Imagine sending your kids off to uni and then this darkness appears on you.
Sorry to hear that, mate.

It's a shame Keith, a lot of it is poverty and lack of decent employment etc. There's still a lot of outlying nice places to live but the city centre holds little appeal for me these days. Looking at the empty pavements it looks like others feel similar.

I'm not going to judge it by this incident which potentially could happen anywhere in our country. An appalling event for the victims and their friends and family to deal with and they have my sympathy

Devastating to watch the fathers of those murdered kids addressing the vigil today.
It was. Tomorrow there will be a vigil in the Old Market Square too. I think the city of Nottingham shares their complete devastation. I attended a work Zoom meeting today, the only person based in Nottingham in the meeting. I felt too choked to express myself when asked for thoughts about it. I feel totally gutted for those young people and their families and for 65 year-old Ian, the third victim who has been named today. A man who was due to enjoy his retirement in four month’s time. I feel choked for the city of Nottingham and for the future of humanity too. I make no apologies for what may sound melodramatic.
We human beings work tirelessly in making sense of things. For this situation it is a senseless loss of human life. There is little sense to be made.

"He was a die-hard Forest fan and an avid fisherman. He used to take under-privileged kids fishing just to get away from crime. You genuinely couldn't find a nicer guy. If we had to think about [his passing] he'd be lying in a bed, with us holding his hand in 20 or 30 years' time, not dying in the street because some guy decided it's not his day today".
One of Ian Coates' sons expresses the senselessness of what happened.

Was it a terrorist attack? Apparently the suspect turned up at the security service's London HQ last August and 'banged on the door' demanding to be let in.

If that's true, then he should have been detained right there and then and taken in for psychological evaluation.

I’m you know more than me, but ten hours into the investigation the security correspondent on the TV news said it was telling that the local force were leading the investigation and not the anti terrorism officers who were merely assisting. He said that meant they knew then that it was not an act of terrorism.
Horrendous incident, and my heart goes out to all who this has affected including yourself.

That's exactly it SH, that's where my understanding comes from. Thanks for your kind words.
I think people are anxious and curious to know the motives and that's understandable. I'd say though the prevailing mood in the city at the moment is not one of why, but of devastation and sorrow for the people who have died and their loved ones. People are in some shock about events.

On what grounds, knocking on a door…. even if he was unlawfully arrested and detained I doubt that any psych team would have sectioned and hospitalised him.

I was reading reports about the three people killed. I read that Ian Coates was due to reach retirement age in four months which rung a bell as I'm in exactly the same position. I looked again at his surname then it just struck me - we were pals in schooldays. Poor Ian lost his mum when he was very young. In a different time he was the only kid at school who was from a single parent family.
The way people have described him is exactly how I remember he was as a wee lad.
God bless him.

That's awful. A man who should have had 20 or 25 years of well earned retirement ahead of him has it snatched away from him in an act of senseless violence.
I'm not sure if it's possible to rationalise such acts, whatever the motivation and whatever the perpetrator's story the seemingly random nature of such an extreme act is near incomprehensible.

I'm pretty sure that hounding the security services is very much against the law. Not sure where you got the idea that an arrest would be unlawful, considering how easy it is for people to be arrested, merely for holding up blank signs these days. As for saying they wouldn't have sectioned him. How do you know? Clearly the person in question was mentally unstable and they would have came to that conclusion and his potential risk to the public after evaluating him.

Arresting a person under the Mental Health Act requires a threshold that their behaviour will cause injury or harm to others or themselves. Arresting someone for knocking on door would not reach the grounds and therefore an arrest would be unlawful. The mental health teams are so stretched that unless life threatening they do not section and hospitalise.

'This monstrous individual will not define us. I know he will receive the retribution he deserves.'
Powerful words from one of the mums of those murdered. Whatever his motivation it seems safe to say he'll never walk the streets again.

Yes, as you will know from your previous work BH, sectioning is comparitively rare. The criteria for sectioning is as above, behaviour that will cause injury or harm to others or themselves. Nothing outside of that criteria as far as I'm aware.

I did wonder if there was some link to the University. Possibly holding some bizarre grudge? :dunno:
Regardless, it's tragic for everybody involved.

In the latest police update they state they don't regard the uni connection as related to the atrocities. Whatever the reason though it remains hard to come to terms with the mindlessness of what he did.

There is something odd about the way this incident is being reported. I absolutely understand, in fairness, that it is still under investigation. In this story below, it appears that the police have reported themselves regarding (I believe) an unmarked car following the van driven by the culprit.
'The police watchdog has confirmed it is investigating whether the presence of a police car led to a van driver hitting two people in the Nottingham attacks'.
https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/nottingham-news/nottingham-attacks-iopc-investigate-van-8528599
Timeline was:
1/ 4.10am First two stabbings (of the young students) on Ilkeston Road, just outside the city centre to the west side.
2/ 5am After alking across city, accused attempts to enter hostel unsuccessfully in Mapperley Road just outside north-east of city.
3/ 5am Ian Coates found on nearby Magdala Road, his van stolen.
4/ 5.30am having driven into the city, van rams 3 pedestrians on Milton Street.
Unreported on all the incident maps is the next apparent incident a couple of hundred yards from Milton Street where, being followed by police, the van hits two pedestrians before van drives off.
5/ 5.40am Calocane dragged from van and arrested on Bentick Road.
On every map and timeline it does not appear to be being reported that Valdo Calocane hit two pedestrians on Sherwood Street. This was whilst the unmarked police car was following him.
