In case of interest, there's an article on the BBC about Pat Nevin's new book, which includes him discussing living with a son with autism (and a mention of his son's love of Hibs): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65820771

Used to sit in front of him and his lad in the East, occasionally his wife when Pat was busy, really nice guy.

Brilliant. Look forward to reading that. I really enjoyed his previous book The Accidental Footballer. A very humble and intelligent man with a braw taste in music. Sounds like a very caring father too

As an autistic myself, engaged to a suspected autistic, and thus likely to be Dad to an autistic daughter in three months, I'm glad neurodiversity is becoming more visible and understood now.

The previous book by Nevin was a great read. A bit different from the other stereotypical football books and all the better for it. I read it last year and remember clearly the bit when Jock Stein tried to psyche Nevin out with a bit of kidology. What an old bugger Stein was.
There were hints in the past regarding his son's condition, which is now out in the open. Look forward to reading this new book and all the best to Nevin and his family.

His first book ‘ The Accidental Footballer ‘ was excellent
Had an amazing record for Celtic Under Age sides 2:1 goals if not better yet they let him go for being too wee despite him being POTY
Played for the last Scotland team to win international competition
Only wanted to play with his mates study politics and listen to music
Loves the Hibs
Boring fact:

I think he enjoys life as is too much, nice balance between punditry and home life.

Still alot of understanding to go, autistic myself and have a autistic son and daughter, hard work to say the least (including me according to the wife 😂)

My daughter is on the spectrum as is her boyfriend, if you didn't know her you'd never know but when she tested a couple of years ago, it explained a lot.

Last Scotland team to win an international tournament was The Kirin Cup, he had long retired by then?!
I’m not meaning to be a smart arse by the way, I just can’t think the tournament you’re talking about?

My son is autistic and a lot of the indications in that regard also apply to me. Never been tested but in a similar vein it would explain a lot if I was also on the spectrum somewhere.

Sounds similar to me, in the past I kept it to myself but more recently found it easier being open and honest that I was slightly different to others.

I've got a mate who has recently been confirmed as autistic.
We have known each other for years so I can get away with a bit more with him than a random would. I said to him recently that since his autism was confirmed he seemed 'more autistic' (I was being light hearted rather than cruel btw). He said basically since it's all been out in the open he's far more comfortable being himself and had basically spent the last 30 odd years masking when out and about. That sounds like hell to have to put that face on every day and he seems so much happier now that everyone knows and he can just be himself.

Yep, little signs over all the years now explained, she's 30 this year, has a very good job and her own flat, no outward signs she's on the spectrum if you met her but we know, little things.

Been there myself, for me I felt that people wouldn't want to know me etc feels far better now that friends know and I'm not treated any differently, did feel like almost a burden or something to be embarrassed about for years, went through councilling with someone trained in autism aswell which also helped put certain things in perspective which helped alot as wad a late diagnosis I got so was pretty much left in the dark about understanding my autism.

It's a scandal how long people have to wait for diagnosis.

I’m glad your mate has had that reaction to his late diagnosis. That sounds very freeing for him, fair play to guy.
My wife was diagnosed about a year ago and she’s said to me on a few occasions that ever since getting the diagnosis she’s worried about “seeming too autistic”. Obviously it’s a bit hurtful for me to hear she thinks like that about herself but I can’t imagine having that internal struggle with yourself, she’s been seeing an autism councillor though so hopefully it’ll make her a bit more comfortable with herself in the long run. It’s a disgrace she’s had to wait until her mid 20s for a diagnosis, I’ve always sort of known she was on the spectrum and she’s always known she was too, but the diagnosis seems to have heightened her insecurities about it.

It's a good read. For anyone who has experience of either parenting children with autism or working with them it's moving to hear his recollections about fearing for his son's future. Great to hear his son has overcome a lot of challenges to live the life he does today - and indeed how great everyone at Hibs has been with him. The autism spectrum is vast and while for some it's a barely perceptible condition there are, sadly, many kids who will simply never be able to make such progress within mainstream society.
