I was looking up some names of players who represented Hibernian during the war years.

I came across an incredible article about the, also incredible,New Years Day derby game played at the Holy Ground in 1940
I will let the article explain the thread title. A superb, fascinating, comical read of a very bizarre game.
Suffice to say, Hibs and hertz did their bit for the war effort :greengrin

It was Willie in particular i was looking up, when a came acroos the article on the ne'erday game.

The post script in the article is worth noting of the bombs dropped on Leith and sadly the author of the article lost family during that.

The article, linked below, about Hibs "one appearance" players includes a photo of Hibs team 1939 with players you mention.
Hardy looking bunch they look as well !
Arthur Milne ,up untill he passed away, lived round the corner from where i stay .Lovely man.
He got one international cap during war time .

During lockdown did somebody not start a thread for a game that could not go ahead. Could start one for the The Rangers game.
1st minute Hibs denied a stonewall penalty when Goldson on the line dived and fisted the ball away from goal.
2nd minute Lundstram goes down in the box no Hibs player near him penalty to Rangers VAR concur.

What is that saying ?"every day is a school day"
That 1940 game must have stuck in the mind of those that saw it or rather ,with the fog, did not, for years.
Some older fans will remember a game in 1975/76 season at Celtic Park in the fog.....
and Celtic fans loved the ref that day.
Story here
https://thecelticstar.com/foggy-dew-rescue/
We wuz most certainly and emphatically robbed.:grr:
Oldco won that season's title,denying Jock Stein's Celtic 10 in a row.
We finished 3rd .

Yes DH
I should have guessed some would pick up on my thread title. :greengrin
I saw the Clancy's and Tommy a few times when i was a teenager.
They played the Usher Hall in Lothian Road annually in the 60s.
Met them twice back stage.
Hibs toured the USA twice in the sixties.
My brother brought back loads of albums/LPs
Mostly country for our ma.Some Patsy Cline with a bit of Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee :greengrin
One Clancy LP was not available here at that time.

Interesting read once again Mick 👍 . Clancy's and Tommy were excellent as were the Dubliners and the fureys also .Must admit I'm a big fan of Finbar Furey myself and this wee girl who I is extremely talented . Two songs here " Danny boy" and the " The Irish Rover " .

Like that
Somewhere between The Pogues and the Sex Pistols !!

My thread went from Misty Holy Ground to the Foggy River Liffey.

Its a well written ballad.
Whatever your views on the events it is about.
Its a true classic Irish folk ballad of its time written by an academic priest.
This one is dedicated to men of the sea .But they all seem to be Hibs fans !

Me to ,she is a real trouper .Such confidence also.
Brilliant voice.

Reminds me of The Clancy's concert all those years ago at the Usher Hall, singing The Wild Rover.

:singing:"I'll go home to my parents, confess what i've done.
and i'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son:singing:

Only at the line ,pardon their "prodigal son"
Someone from the gods above shouting in tune... Protestant Son !!
The group kept a nearly straight face an carried on !!

Tommy Makem was a music and poetic genius
He wrote Four Green Fields
https://omniglot.com/songs/english/fourgreenfields.php
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsaQPobUZiM&list=RDZCMDBqSb5kM&index=12

In the US town of Dover,New Hampshire, where he lived and died, they named a bridge after him and his wife Mary.
Tommy sang and played with the legendary folk/protest singers of the 1960s in America.
They played at the Carnegie Hall, but alas, they never played the Holy Ground before an old rAngers game.
That would have been fun !!

It is truly incredible though.
The BBC ...The War Office ..
Troops overseas awaiting a live.ish footbal match commentary to go with their tinned turkey and prunes !
Oh No..... do not cancel the game cos of fog.... No Nol!
The Fuhrer will find out and the Luftwaffe will have a field day dropping bombs in the fog.
Truly incredible ! To use that oft said quote .
"You could not make it up"

Its straight out of a John Buchan novel.
Or even better, and funnier...an episode of Michael Palin's Rippin Yarns .
A film should be made about it.
Get Dougray Scott and Irving Welsh on the case !:greengrin

The article from "oldcastlerock"states the game was turned into a stage play aired on BBC 4 on New Years Day 2002 .
Play was called "Playing a Blinder"
If anyone can find that or how to get it,be great to hear it.
Must be a tape/recording of it still, BBC Archives ?

How popular our club was in those dark days, followed by the Famous Five era ,getting invites to Europe and South America.
All this before Euro trophies and mass media and quick communication we take for granted today.
Yet The Hibees were known far and wide !!
Must have been "The best brand of football" they all wanted to see !:agree::greengrin
And those iconic strips !
