40th anniversary of Aberdeen winning the Cup Winners Cup final against Real Madrid. The last time Real Madrid lost a European final.
No sign of the Old Firm.
At the same time Dundee United got to the European Cup semi final when they were cheated by a corrupt referee and reached the UEFA cup final as well.
I doubt we will ever see the likes again but I wish we could.

We will never see it again. The football world has changed dramatically/financially over the last 40 years. Also fans of other clubs were (mostly) happy to see other clubs do well in europe, very much doubt it would be the same nowadays.

Hibs, arguably, played their part in that night.

A couple of weeks before the game, Aberdeen had a couple of players struggling with injury (Dougie Bell and, I think, John McMaster). To help their recovery, a full-scale practice match was arranged at ER. It was midweek, in the afternoon, and fans were allowed in for free.

Just think of the many more nights scottosh football could have had if it wasn't for the tv money.

Didn't we play them the game after they won it at Pitoddrie and they gubbed us 5 - 1?

It's really sad. Just before my time Hibs were an actual European contender, which seems surreal tbh. Even in the late 70s/80s, although we were mostly rubbish you felt that it was possible for a club like Hibs to go right to the top of the game. If Aberdeen and United could do it, why not us?

That possibility is long gone now, even for Celtc and the New huns.

I can't believe that it's 40 years since the dandy Dons won the European Cup Winners' Cup. It's maybe hard for your younger fans to understand this but the Aberdeen team were one of the best teams in Europe at the time, with many great results. Winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, the European Super Cup and beaten semi-finalists in 1984. They were a joy to watch with every player a Scot, if I remember correctly.

Another observation is that I recall fans of The Rangers saying that they saved Scottish Football in 1987, when Souness etc arrived at Ibrox. Maybe good for them, but they killed Scottish Football. That was the beginning of the decline of the Scottish National Team, plus multi-team competition in our league.

Before my time. Aberdeen to me are a club that has escaped relegation twice by default and been emptied out the cup by Stenhousmuir and Darvel. Great achievement 40 years ago though. Brilliant period under McKinnes when Hibs, Hearts and the new Rangers were on their knees. Their crowds in a one team city, and basically a one team region, are pathetic. Landed a freak of nature when they appointed Fergie. Lucky bassas.

40 years ago! Did we have mobile phones, laptop's or even the internet? (functioning for society) No. They won a trophy that doesn't even exist anymore. Same as Rangers (not the the's)

40 years previous to 1983 we were still in the 2nd world war.

5-0 My first visit to Aberdeen with my old man. Very small Hibs support in the back corner of the Beach End with the rest of the shed full of home fans.

:hmmm:

Above us in the SPFL and have won more trophies than us - cups more than double our total with the league being won the same number of times, three times each during both teams 'golden' era.

Hibs did have their chance to achieve more in the 70s but ultimately you'd have to say the Tornadoes underachieved.

My first ever visit as well.

Also first time I ever encountered the casuals (all wearing Argyle jumpers) who appeared before the game where our buses were parked... and were quickly chased up the road by some of our own keelies ;)

It was a pretty **** time to be a Hibby. Huns and celtic, then up pop Aberdeen and Dundee Utd. Hearst then joined in mid eighties. We weren't even also rans. We were behind St Mirren. Tough times and those of us still going should get a medal!! Aberdeen and utd were great examples of how Hibs should have been run. We were ahead of them early to mid 70s and threw that advantage away. They just progressively got better and we just dropped off a cliff!!

League reconstruction in the 70s which tipped the balance towards the OF started the decline!

Don't agree - how come Aberdeen and Dundee United won the league in the 80s, both getting to European Finals. Prior to League Reconstruction in 1975, the previous Non-Old Firm winner was Kilmarnock in 1964/65 (with Ha Ha Hertz second), eleven years earlier. After reconstruction, Aberdeen won the league in the 5th year after reconstruction, the start of 4 non-Old Firm winners in 6 years. No, the decline started as soon as Rangers FC started to splash the cash.
