A lot of his analysis about the things that are wrong in America; lack of genuine debate, power concentrated in small unaccountable hands, economic stagnation for all but the very top of society, are sadly accurate. And the Democratic Partys abandonment of the working class in the Clinton era carries a lot of the blame for that. But this man’s solutions (you KNOW what he means when he talks about the ‘threat of demographics’ -he’s talking replacement theory- pure jackboots and black and gold Fred Perry shirts) are pure poison.
Sadly, a lot of blue collar America listens to him at the moment.

He speaks to a constituency that feels ignored. Also, their fears have been weaponised by the US right. Happens here too.

Pretty harmless little vid. He didn’t say anything controversial at all.

Nah, it doesn’t sound too appealing.

The problem with guys like him is that when they're on their path to a diagnosis, they appear credible. Much of what he says is reasonable.
It's the proposed treatment that is objectionable, and that comes next.
Profitable for him too, when he gets his little (well, possibly huge) tribe buying into his ideas.

I don't actually disagree with a lot of what he says in the video, much of it is applicable to the UK and indeed a whole host of other countries as well.
The issue is that the problems he is describing are largely understood. Carlson and those like him, be it in the media or positions of power, are offering supposedly easy solutions to complex problems. The worry is that as it stands they seem to be more able to engage with many of the people they are targeting than those seeking to counter them.

The reason my thread title describes him as a disingenuous ****bag is because in that video he is politically cross-dressing as a concerned citizen/journalist/commentator on the very real issues he narrates, knowing full well that his 'remedies' for these matters are a series of dishonest, divisive, malignant and wildly conspiracy theory driven rants aimed purely at monetising the reaction from those who are hurting and those who are glorying in it.

I'm not sure that stacks up, particularly since economic polarisation in the States has been accelerating since the 1970s.
Firstly his economic record is regarded as being at worst mixed and at best quite good. Secondly, if I was going to rank factors responsible for lack of genuine debate, concentrated power and economic stagnation for all but the rich I think the Clinton administration would come a good bit behind eg the Reagan and two Bush administrations, globalisation, the rise of the corporate semi-monopolies, the decline of both Union power and efficacy of their educational system and - in some ways perhaps most importantly now - the hijacking of the Republican Party by the Tea Party and its successors from 2009 onwards. I suppose I'm saying I think it is unfair to single his administration out against the backdrop of everything else that's been going on.

The Republicans have indeed been more damaging to the genuine interests of the poor than the Democrats, when in power. But that’s not the wider public perception, is it? As Robert Reich (no Bernie Sanders loving socialist he) said after Trumps victory:
‘The Democratic party once represented the working class. But over the last three decades the party has been taken over by Washington-based fundraisers, bundlers, analysts, and pollsters who have focused instead on raising campaign money from corporate and Wall Street executives and getting votes from upper middle-class households in “swing” suburbs.’

I’d posit that this isn’t a new phenomenon, or a phenomenon unique to the US, it’s already happened in many other countries (look at the total collapse in traditional party allegiance in France). The traditional centre left party moves to the centre right and abandons its core demographic, nasty things tend to happen to them. And extremely nasty politics comes in from behind to fill the void.

Completely agree. He’s very good at it too.

I get that. I think we are coming at it from broadly the same angle.

There's quite a divide in levels of education and voting patterns. That’s not to say that that republican voters are stupid, but maybe the Democrat messaging cuts through to more educated groups? That, BTW, is a criticism of the Democrats. It leaves a vacuum that people like Carlson and whoever follows him will gladly fill.
