Best midfielder we have. Never in doubt. Should've been MotM.

Doesn't always impact games enough which is the frustration as he's more than capable.

More of that for the remainder of the season. Lovely jubbly.

I started this thread because i knew he could play like that, and when he does he's majestic the way he carrys the ball and makes things happen.

You must have your eyes painted on if you think he does this every week, he clearly does not.

Now having that insurance behind him obviously works, we must keep him further forward and not have him deeper, we are a poorer side if we do.

Well done Joe. :top marks

:agree: Jeggo is not everyones favorite but we need a decent player performing that role and at our level he is that... and if that allows others to be more on the front foot it benefits whole team

Some posters on here give him loads of stick but he never hides, always looking for the ball and is robust and reliable. He did miss a few games at the start of the year but he is one we can count on.

Just needs better players around him.

Trying far too hard.

He’s not been good all season. Performances like today are why so many get pissed off with him because he has it in his locker to be that imposing on games yet other games can pass him by.

He was outstanding today from minute 1 to being subbed, but we need that level of performance much more often.

To add a note of caution, remember that this was the same midfield our three of a debuting Jeggo, Stevenson and Campbell dominated in the cup derby despite the result.

While I understand the reaction, Hearts are really poor in midfield and look done as a team. If Newell turned in that performance against Celtic then I would definitely be agreeing with the praise.

I think we know that Newell cannot do the holding or box to box role and his positive showing yesterday came as the #10 in front of Jeggo and JDH. The question is can he be creative enough and add the goals and assists which you need from that position over the course of a season?

I think that midfield yesterday would struggle breaking down teams. I still really like JDH as a player and would build the midfield around him and Campbell.

Big test for Hibs next week which will tell us a lot more about the current team.

He does, but he also loves us. His best pals are Hibs fans, his family are all Hibbies now. Last derby when he was in the stand he was going absolutely mental apparently, was kicking and heading every ball from the stands and just as angry as anyone else.

Newell is a great footballer in his prime and would run through a brick wall for this club.

He has games where he's not at his best, as all players worldwide do, but generally he's an excellent player for us and the volume of criticism he receives is baffling.

100%, very good player.

He’s the one player every opposition team player/manager mentions as one of our best players when asked.

He’d get better with better players around him too, hopefully he shows the consistency from yesterday more often.

We need the the same performance and mentality against st Johnstone next week

I actually don’t think he realises how good a player he is /could be. It’s all about mentality to keep progressing.

hibee-boys

We need him further up the park influencing games, he’s too much skill to be pxxxxxx about with the ball sitting in front of our centre half’s. He’s a far more effective 8 or 10 than 6 yet has been deployed in that role quite often by a number of managers. Jeggo arriving has certainly helped.

Four Managers in a row have made him a first pick for a reason (well Hecky did once he realised he was not a winger).
He is one of the few in our squad who can pick the right pass and play with a level of composure. He showed on Saturday what a great asset he can be against our direct rivals, when playing at the top of his game.

Hibees1973

We don't half have a load of dross in our squad.

Just my guess but we have 60% dross, 30% average and 10% above average.

Of this 10% above average, there is no doubt that one of them is Joe. He is one of the few players we have able to control a ball in tight spaces, look for a Hibs player and pick him out with a pass. Not a mind blowing skill to have but, most of our players cannot do this. Joe sticks out a mile in this Hibs team.

I know Joe does have his critics on here, which I cannot understand. One of the main issues some posters have is that he goes missing at times. Fair enough, he may do this but if he had no faults he wouldn't be at Hibs.

When Joe came on this afternoon he was not afraid to look for the ball, take responsibility and try to get us moving forward.

There was interest in Joe from other clubs in this window. Hope he doesn't leave.

Good post, long been a critic of him as I genuinely believe he plays within himself at times, but certainly cannot fault him and if it were me, given his commitment to Hibs, I'd be making him captain before Hanlon. Still needs to drive the side forward more, needs more energy (consistently), but agreed, a good player and played the right way is an asset. Just very infuriating (for me) that he doesn't seem to have the belief in his ability at times.

I’m coming round to the idea he’s our best midfielder and also coming round to the idea he’s worthy of a starting slot in a Hibs team.

That being said, I think the fact he’s our best midfielder without much question is telling in itself. We need significantly better players in there beside him.
