Final ten stadiums now confirmed. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65245224) Six are in England and us, Wales, NI and Ireland get one each.

You’d have to think the UK and Ireland will win the bid.

Should also mention that the final decision will be made in September (between us and Turkey) and all hosts have been confirmed to qualify automatically.

Ah I guess awarding 5 automatic places could be problematic. Would still think UK should get it though

Hampden? Murrayfield or Celtic Park would have been a better choice. Belfast stadium should be dropped.

There's no way there would be a UK and Ireland bid without a stadium in Northern Ireland.

Hampden will have got the nod because it's a 5 star UEFA stadium. All the required stadium infrastructure is in place and it's been modernised for both the Europa League final a few years back, the Commonwealth games and Euro 2020 to remain compliant. I think Ibrox is 5 star as well but it's a smaller capacity than Hampden. Celtic Park isn't, no idea about Murrayfield as it's not (primarily) a football stadium so not sure if UEFA have graded it.

I was hearing on the news that there might be £14M available for further upgrading at Hampden if successful

If it gets behind the goals moved forward ala Stuttgart then that'll be perfect.

I would have strong doubts that it will be built in time.

It's taken years to get any sort of permission granted (not sure whether it has been finalized). There is no government here currently.

Largely true here also.

Can Everton afford to build their stadium?

It needs a lot more than that, a new stadium would be preferable.

Belfast should absolutely be a host city (if they can get the stadium built in time)

That was the rumour of what would be happening if we win the bid, would be great if so

It's the Euros 2028, not the Subbuteo 2028 championship.

apart from having the Euros partly here which would be good as has been mentioned it a chance (probably the only one) that the flaws in Hampden can be rectified with investment that would not otherwise be available... rail seating / safe standing at each end brought closer to goals would be awsome

Both ends at Hampden hold around 12,000 each, near enough half the capacity of the stadium. You don;t have to be an expert on stadium building to figure that to demolish both ends and rebuild them would cost a hell of a lot more than 14 million quid.

You could actually see England's bid go through unapposed as Turkey are hedging their bets and putting their bid forward to cover both 2028 and 2032 and it depends whether they think they might have a better chance against the Italians.

It's surprising the North of Ireland are being allowed to proceed with a stadium that isn't even built yet and still has to overcome hurdles from a government that doesn't exist.

Easily dropped if push comes to shove though and Ireland are amptly recognised already through Dublin and hopefully the bid progreses well as England is a fine nation with such a depth of football heritage.

Not sure that there will be 5 automatic places for this bid. UEFA have allowed both joint hosts to qualify automatically. However 5 auto-qualifiers would be unprecidented and I'm not sure there has been confirmation of how that will be handled.

Doubt I'd be too enthused by a Scandanavian or Balkan tournament that auto-qualified several nations if that made it harder for Scotland to qualify.

I wonder if they’ll award 2-3 host places but have us all try and qualify anyway, with those host places shared among any of the home nations that don’t make it?

As others have said, 5 host spots seems very unlikely…

I think that may well be the case. England are as good as certain to qualify anyway and with the expanded format it's not unreasonable to think 1 of the other 4 could make it as well. 3 'gifted' places rather than 5 will likely be more palatable to other nations and UEFA themselves.

If there's no automatic qualification then I'd rather we just didn't bid. No point.

The whispers are that this will be expanded to a 32 team tournament soon and with it I'd expect automatic qualification based on Nations League places anyway.

Maximum of 2 according to an article I just read. Would probably come down to the two highest ranked nations if that was the case I expect. I’m sure there will be plenty of communication to get all 5 in though somehow.

What I’m not understanding about the choices of stadiums is why it couldn’t be more spread out between the countries? If the GAA are willing to allow Casement Park to be used then surely they’d allow Croke Park to be used as well? Why not use Celtic Park/Ibrox/Murrayfield? It’s England’s tournament and the rest of us get the scraps from the table.

Norn Irn really is a weird and wonderful place, Windsor Park is nowhere near big enough to hold European Championship matches. So what’s their REAL problem with Casement Park being used?[emoji102]
