Genuine talent or not, it’s been of little value given that he’s spent much of the last 3 years watching on from the sidelines. I get some of the fan’s frustration with this guy, it’s driven by the fact that a fit Magennis is exactly what we need in midfield right now. I’ve no doubt the guy is hurting being out and not contributing but pound for pound it’s looking like one of the most uneconomical deals ever given by Hibs. It’ll be interesting to see how his injuries develop as he reaches the end of this 5 year contract, I seem to remember another regular absentee McGeouch’s regular niggles clearing up as he headed towards the end of his Hibs contract🤔

Great player when he’s fit but we can’t afford to have a player in the stand most of the season and only fit to play 5 or 6 times a season.
Constantly injured. No his fault but waste of money if he never plays

The frustration with signing Magennis is that it was our own fault. We signed a player who had been injured for a full season already and had still not recovered. What other teams do this? It’s pretty rare, surely?
In three seasons he has played less than 50 games for us and played well in about 10 of those. The rest have been sub appearances or not fully match fit appearances.
Giving him a 5 year contract has to be up there with the most stupid contracts we have given any player.
And however we’ll he might be playing when he eventually gets fit, we must resist any temptation to renew his deal.
Per game he must be the most expensive player we have had in a long long time.

Said the same previously regarding your last point.
Between paying a fee and giving him a 5 year deal he must have been one of our most expensive signings in terms of fee and the commitment we’ve made to him on the day he signed. It’s been disastrous.

Magennis and Bushiri could both be back for the post split fixtures.
The upside on Magennis this season is that since returning from his summer surgery he has had no more bad injuries.
I appreciate he has still only played 13 league games this season but it's best to look at the positives and hope that next season will finally see him play consistently.

I’d discount those appearances when he came on as a sub on the left wing. He’s clearly not a winger.
His Hibs career has been deeply disappointing so far, but when he’s had a run of games in central midfield he has done well.
He’s a talented player but just cannot get fit.

I don’t think they should be discounted. We watched a guy who wasn’t even doing the basics well in those games. His general play, stuff like his touch, passing etc that should be evident regardless of the position he’s playing were miles off. He was terrible in his first season here.

Good player, an in-form Magennis is a massive benefit to the team. Overall, what a terrible signing though.
This season, when he’s been fit, he’s never really shown top form for us either. I know he got a couple v Livi, but more often than not this season I’ve been disappointed with his performance. Could be that he’s just never got up to match speed.
I’m sure I posted the same thing a year ago, but if we go into next season expecting him to be available, rather than bringing in someone else who can do what he does, then we’re kidding ourselves and setting ourselves up to struggle in midfield (again).

Sorry but don’t see it. He had a pre-season this year and couldn’t manage it. He seems to get injured and we are told he will be 2-3 weeks and he isn’t seen for months. That suggests he keeps breaking down where others wouldn’t.
I am a huge fan of his, I was desperate for him to get fit and kick on, but even I think we should cut ties.

I think he's okay when fit. He certainly isn't the answer to all our issues, though. He does some stupid things when he is fit as well. Red card vs St Johnstone this season, gave away a pen vs Livi ( think) a few years back which was just ridiculous.
I cant see us getting rid, but we probably should.

Think hamstring again.
At the AST night in the Albion Bar, Johnson said Magennis had been in London seeing a specialist, this time it’s a concern with his groins.
I hope we never again sign a player who’s injured at the time he’s signed. Utter madness but par for the course with the incompetence that runs through the club these days.

Whilst I can see the point that a thread like this is perhaps in bad taste I do think it contains a serious point.
Over the last 5 season Magennis has the following number of games:
18/19 -19
19/20 - 27
20/21 - 23
21/22 - 13
22/23 - 13 (so far)
A fair few of them were coming on as a sub as well. Whilst it's obviously devastating for any player to have a chronic injury issue or issues, can we as a club afford to be carrying a squad member who has proven incapable of playing substantial numbers of games in a season for quite some time now?
For a comparison the much mocked 'it's all in his head sick note' Dylan McGeouch managed the following in his time at Hibs:
14/15 -26
15/16 -30
16/17 -23
17/18 - 42
There is of course both contractual issues and a duty of care from the club and whilst Magennis is a good player when fit there must increasingly be questions about whether he can consistently get back to the level he has previosuly reached.
GreenGray

Sometimes I wonder where we would be as a club if he didn't get injured in the 21/22 season. We had started so well and he was a huge part of that. Form fell off a cliff once he got injured.

Signed a 5 year deal in 2020 ,still 2 years left , Henderson 2 years left ,JDH 2 years left not easy to cut our losses with players under contract . Plus you have players returning in the summer like Tait , McKay, melkersen . You are spot on though , our signings have been a disaster . Not easy for any manager dealing with so many issues.

This thread is incredible. I think more than anyone Mcgennis knows how much football he’s missed without ‘supporters’ mocking the situation.
Who knows how is is mentally which I’m not sure many are thinking about when posting trash.
Anyone play football? Fives? Sevens? Anyone went through a period when they keep getting injured? It’s demoralising however the majority of us can just get on with our day jobs but for a footballer there’s no out.
