Don't know if anyone knew Paul, but got some terribly sad news earlier today that he had died suddenly from late diagnosed pancreatic cancer.
Paul and my dad were mates for 50+ years and I got to know Paul standing on the corner of the old east terrace and covered 'cave' end. He was a season ticket holder in the west stand from day one and sat next to my dad there ever since.
Paul was one of Europe's finest Sanskrit scholars and retired from Edinburgh University a few years ago. I was honoured to be with him on that day in 2016 when we finally beat that hoodoo. He was one of the kindest and knowledgeable people you could ever meet.
Rest in peace Paul.
