Sharing an email from a colleague, which might be of interest or use to some. I've highlighted the point of concern.

We have recently been alerted to the new emergency alert service the UK government is launching to warn the public about events such as fires and extreme weather.

On Sunday 23rd April 2023, there will be a test of this new service. This will send an alert to all phones. The alert will be a short text message on screen plus a sound and vibration for approximately 10 seconds. This alert will sound even if the phone is on silent or not connected to mobile data/WiFi.

Please share with any and all of your networks as this could be really important for a service user, friend or colleague who has a secret or secondary mobile phone hidden from an abusive partner.

People can take actions to ensure that the emergency alert will not show up or sound on their phones. They will NOT receive an emergency alert if their phone is switched off or on airplane mode. The charity Refuge have also shared a video showing how to turn off the emergency alerts on Android phones and iPhones. More information about the alert service is available here.

Interesting that it will play a sound even if on silent. The fact that the government have the technology to basically override your own settings on your mobile is rather odd IMO.

The number of people who have second phones hidden from their partner, but not necessarily in abusive relationships, is probably not an insignificant number.

I can imagine a few people and relationships getting a shock on Sunday. Although, if they all go off at literally the same second, it might not be noticeable.

I think secondary SIMS rather than phones is more likely and therefore not affected. (Speaking from experience, not my own I might add)

Not sure why they'd bother telling us about a nuclear strike....

"Arthur Seat is on fire, stay away" is about the only emergency alert which I can think of being applicable to us Edinburgh citizens in the height of a scorching summer.

I have not read any of the arguments against this emergency alert, but I could well see emergency alerts having the opposite effect, and actually attract rubberneckers to the area. I know on the night of the Manchester Arena Bombing I was driving back from London up the M6 and I had a drop to make in Rochdale. All the way along the motorway there was flashing yellow warning lights with wording: "Manchester closed, stay away". I had this burning desire to drive in to Manchester just to prove how brave I am. I resisted and waited until I got back to Edinburgh and I googled what had happened.

But I suppose overall, I can understand how it could have its advantages.

I hope you also have a good few fully charged Lead Crystal Batteries with you to make up for the fact that there is likely to be an electric power outage.

After a nuclear detonation, there is the potential for cascading effects along transmission lines in this area. This could mean electrical, phone, and Internet outages. These cascading effects may extend for hundreds of miles from the detonation site.

Access to the internet in such an event also appears unlikely.

I remember reading that someone whose kid had been murdered now had to put up with tourists visiting trying to work out what happened etc.

I'm struggling to see how it will be useful. Most weather events are known about in time for decisions to be made by householders. None of the big weather alerts we have had came as a surprise in recent years and usually the advice is to stay home. Even Arthur Seat being on fire would only be a big issue for those up there and I expect they will know before the alert. There are a multitude of channels to communicate on already and I think this is just another intrusion into my personal space and a way of stoking up more fear. If there is a nuclear warhead coming my way I think I would rather be blissfully unaware than lose the last wee while worrying about it. If someone was invading our shores I suspect I would have a wee hint of that before it happened and what am I going to do anyway. I'll be interested to see the cost and who got the contract. My guess is expensive and someone in Governments mate.

You would have to be more specific. I dare say there would be for some and it would give the opportunity to say goodbye to love ones etc. For me if you are telling loved ones a few minutes before you die that you are sorry or you love them etc it would have been better said long before that. There may be an instance where I could see benefit but I can't think of one. Even then I would like it to be a sign up to service rather than forced on citizens.

There are plenty of circumstances in which the capability to do this could be important and useful without it bein an 'end of the world' scenario.

A nuclear threat doesn't have to be either an incoming full scale strike or indeed an incoming strike at all. It could be a limited strike or it could be a terrorist bomb. It could be a one-off dirty bomb.

It could relate to the limited and illustrative use of a Russian hypersonic missile.

It could be geology related - a tsunami or earthquake, or a consequence of an Icelandic volcanic eruption.

It could be flooding related.

It could be very extreme weather related.

It could be epidemic related.

It could be space strike related - eg a late detected incoming asteroid impact.

It could be loss of internet/web related should someone decide to go for sub-sea cable destruction.

It could be energy shortage related.

It could be - my favourite - zombie apocalypse related.

And finally it could of course be telly related - 'Eurovision is about to start, get on it.'

Or a chemical spill, freak weather event etc. I would like warnings when Eurovision is about to come on - for different reasons.

Nah, it wouldn't need to. By the time the chips become a thing here, it will be sold to people as "convenience" and they'll queue up like lambs to the slaughter. If you don't believe that will happen, you should know that it's already occurring in other countries. Sweden started doing it years ago.

Who cares if it only starts out with a few thousand people? Everything starts off that way until the convenience appears to outweigh the consequences. People spend hours upon hours staring at their iphone and android screens every day looking for their next dopamine fix. It wasn't always that way, it takes hold so gradually that we don't even see it coming. This will be no different.

The dead centre's NWO

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_world_order_(politics)

The term "new world order" refers to a new period of history evidencing dramatic change in world political thought and the balance of power in international relations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_power_in_international_relations). Despite varied interpretations of this term, it is primarily associated with the ideological notion of world governance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_governance) only in the sense of new collective efforts to identify, understand, or address global problems that go beyond the capacity of individual nation-states (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation-states) to solve.

Versus the far left or right's NWO

The New World Order (NWO) is a conspiracy theory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_theory) that hypothesizes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothesis) a secretly emerging totalitarian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totalitarianism) world government (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_government).[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Order_(conspiracy_theory)#cite_note-Camp_1997-3)[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Order_(conspiracy_theory)#cite_note-Berlet_and_Lyons_2000-4)[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Order_(conspiracy_theory)#cite_note-Goldberg_2001-5)[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Order_(conspiracy_theory)#cite_note-Barkun_2003-6)[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Order_(conspiracy_theory)#cite_note-Fenster_2008-7)

Anyone know how to personalise it in Settings? I was looking to have it as Chimes.

Maybe one for the Technical Help forum, admins feel free to move.

I’d love to know as well. I’d want Frazer from Dads Army saying ‘We’re doomed.’

If we can use downloads then I want the sound, followed by “This Is The Voice Of The Mysterons!”

Nothing on my phone, turned my work phone on and nothing on that either.

Not to worry as I have already built a makeshift bomb shelter out of old Amazon boxes at the bottom of the garden,

In pub, heard it all around.. then again for a few minutes after (different phones)... guess its down to how good a connection your phone has to the mast?

(Pub's a bit of a concrete bunker so signal always been patchy)

Edit.. on reflection this is maybe a GOOD place to get this sort of message!

Sounds like a ploy to round up the riff raff in one shelter and lock the door behind them.

Seems a lot of people on Three (including me) didn't get it: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/apr/23/uk-emergency-alert-test-three-looking-into-why-users-failed-to-get-text

Quiet as a mouse for me but probably just enough to set off the DNA altering mini bots injected with my covid jags and boosters.

I was really surprised to read today that the contract for this service had went to Rishi’s wife’s family business.
