He's here!

When I first started watching Scottish football (way back in the 70s), if you finished third you were clearly one of the top sides in the country, probably in with a shout of a title bid. Post-Souness/Fergus McCann it became all but impossible for a non Old Firm team to win the title but third place was still the preserve of a team which was a great deal better than those near the foot of the table. These days, though, third has become the reward for the team which proves themselves slightly less mediocre/crap than the other also-rans. Witness not just our own haphazard season but the likes of Hearts and Aberdeen, Livingston, St Mirren and Motherwell. In fact only Dundee United have been pretty consistent in racking up one poor result after another. Basically you can look like you've gone into freefall but then rely on another team's run of dismal form to haul you back in among the pack.
Some folk argue this represents a competitive league but I want to see signs of tangible progress from my team, not this stop-start mix of mundane/dreadful, broken up by brief spells of OK-ish results. I have absolutely no idea where Hibs are going and have given up trying to discern a strategy for improving things. I imagine it's the same for fans of most other clubs.
