Just saw this.

Sad news. I knew he had been struggling for a while but he looked in relatively good nick at ER recently.

Up there as one of Scotland's greatest sports stars.

Had his health issues, plus his own demons but was a genuinely lovely man. I got to know his fairly well 40 odd years ago when he used to drink in the pub I worked in. RIP Ken, a true champion.

Rip Ken

I used to work in the branch of the Bank where he held his belts in safe keeping and one day when he had them out he asked if I wanted to try them on.

As a 17-year-old boy of course I did!

One of my claims to fame is that I have held World Championship Boxing belts :-)

One of Scotland's greatest sportsmen and a really nice man.

Oh no, one of my first real heroes who boxed in a division that was full of seriously good boxers and he was a prince amongst them.

A true Scottish sporting legend. RIP champ.

Sad news. One of my Boxing heroes.

Never met him but knew his dad, he once stood in a queue to get Cup Final tickets for me and a few others, and he was no spring chicken at the time!

a real character, and happy to talk about Ken all day.

RIP Champ. :boo hoo:

Really sad news. I got to know Kenny over the last few years. One of his carers is a friend and he’d bring him to my pub for a coffee or half shandy. He loved that his picture is in the walk, amongst some other Scottish legends and really enjoyed recounting his stories from his days at the very top of his sport. Despite his dementia, he always seemed in decent physical health and was happy. Really pleased he got to see his statue finally being unveiled a few months ago.

Sad news about a great World Champion when it was a top sport full of fine boxers.

Mind going down to the City Chambers when they held a reception for him after he'd won the World Title and there was some crowd out.

R.I.P. Champ.

Met Ken Buchanan a few times at the Maybury Roadhouse. He came in after he returned from a fight I think was a fight in Paris. He had his gloves with him and I asked if I could put them on which he said no problem. He asked if I wanted to keep them stupidly I said no,big mistake by me. I was a starstruck 13 year old. There was an interview with Roberto Duran and he was asked who was his toughest opponent to which he replied Buchanan.
RIP

I attended a match up in the tartan club, where young boxers got the chance to spar with the champ. They got the opportunity to be in the ring with a world champion and to see if they could get close and touch his tourso. Needless to say nobody came close. Ken was an immense character in and out of the ring, and will be sorely missed.

Rip Champ.

Buchanan came from Bingham not Leith and wasn't partrticulary interested in football but he was one of Scotland's and the worlds greatest ever boxers if such horrible sport like that floats your boat.

As a man he was on a different level to that coward from the Pans who craves respect and recognition but doesn't even come close.

Scottish sporting legend. There is an excellent BBC documentary about him on iplayer which is well worth a watch. Did seem to be more regarded and respected in the US rather than in his own country however represented Scotland heroically on the world stage. RIP Champ.

Very sad news, Ken was another who defined the word "legend" Pity his own country never held him in the regard that the rest of the boxing world did at the time.
A great son of Edinburgh, R.I.P.

Met Ken 3 times once in the Alhambra for 5 minutes ,he had just received his World Champions Hall Of Fame ring ,the other time outside McDonald Road Library again just for 5 minutes really nice guy nothing was to much of a problem .
The first time I met him was with my Uncle Charlie who was doing some work in his hotel years ago, I was about 8-9 he told me to go and look at he big picture on the wall in the other room and not to touch anything he would only be a minute or 2 , I was standing looking at it and Kenny appeared at the other end of the ballroom I guess you`d call it , he was walking towards me ,I looked up at him ," All right son , yer Uncle Charlie wants you ".
I was in awe , I couldnt speak nothing would come out "Hello Mr Buchanan was my best effort" , I do remember he had a huge keeker tho, he just laughed ruffled my hair gave me a wink and walked past .I was starstruck it was like the world had stopped,I remember it like it was yesterday.

RIP Ken , a true Scottish legend .

It is beyond belief the lack of recognition of Kenny from the Embra Establishment back when he was top of the world .

I sometimes saw Kenny on the 26 bus when he lived near us in Clerry :greengrin
Well posher Drum Brae Hill for Ken.
I recall a windae cleaner, who was never out the Clerry Inn, left his ladder in Kenny's garden when Kenny was away fighting.
Not a happy Ken,i was told later.
The last time i spoke to him,i was in Junction Street, had just missed ma bus, so popped into Tam O Shanter for a swift one.
Well i was there a good while chatting with The Champ.

Nice article/interview with Ken on this link

Not to detract from a great champ and Scottish sporting legend but I think you will find that Cholo said it was his toughest FIGHT, not that KB was his toughest opponent. He was well on top on the scorecards when delivering the low blow that crushed KB’s nuts and effectively ended the bout.

You're right, but he did say beating Ken was the most important night of his career.
