As buzzing as I am with the result, I can't help but feel a little bit of sadness that it wasn't on free TV. Games like tonight are the exact games you want kids watching. Show them what it means to do well for Scotland, get them invested young, but the crooks at the SFA having it on Viaplay rather than BBC is an own goal of massive proportions.

Not looking to turn tonight into a negative one, just leaving a bitter taste thinking about how many kids missed out on that match tonight, and how many longtime supporting fans have had to persist with dodgy streams or radio commentary for a game that really, really should have been on free TV.

Spot on, England, Wales and I think NI all have their matches on free view TV.

Crooks? Because they agreed a TV deal with the highest bidder?

But free TV will not offer enough money to show our games. The SFA has to take the best offer.

Is it not the case that it’s UEFA that negotiate and decide who gets the broadcasting rights? I’m not sure this one is on the SFA.

Premise of the OP is right though. Scotland games should be on free to air.

Short term gain, long term loss. It’s games like tonight’s that cause young fans to fall in love with the Scotland national team which can last a lifetime and get older fans who have maybe lost interest back into things. If I’d watched a game like that when I was younger the first thing out my mouth would be asking to go to Hamden for the next game.

Instead many people couldn’t watch it.

We pay a TV licence despite half of us never watching anything on BBC. The least we should get is our national sports teams covered.

Yep. Frankly don't think it matters how much who bids, it should always be on free TV otherwise half the nation don't get to watch the national team. The other home nations are on free TV, as usual we are the odd ones out.

Football has been taken away from the working class, in order to watch SPL, CL and cup games, you need to pay for Sky, BT and Viaplay. Most families can't afford one if those three never mind all 3.

Not to worry, we get to watch endless epl women’s football and fa cup games live whilst only those paying for the privilege get to watch SPFL premiership and Scottish international football. We all know it makes sense… or something

... all of the above

I watched it on a 'dodgy' (but HD) stream, even though I could have watched it on Spanish TV... Wouldn't have been the same. BIG disappointment I couldn't get it on satellite

The government could force them. The world cup and euros finals have to be shown free-to-air in the UK but not the qualifiers as things stand.

It's not the SFA who sell the rights to the Euros or World Cup qualifiers it is UEFA.
Blame the London government for not adding these games to the list of sports that must be shown on council telly.
If England were the same you can guarantee things would change.

It really is something that needs to be looked at.

I was in the pub watching the game last night and it was pretty quiet, passed another couple of pubs on the way out and back home and they were the same.

Not many people will be paying for Viaplay and even though a lot of people have dodgy firesticks there is still going to be a hell of a lot of people who were unable to watch a famous Scotland victory last night.

The qualifiers really should be on the BBC imo but for whatever reason they don't seem interested in or are unable to do a deal for such games, including those involving England and Wales alongside Scotland.

You'd have thought with few people having it that pubs showing it would have been busier.

I know it's not what you're getting at, but I'd go as far to say people who can't afford £3 extra a week wont be able to afford a pint to go watch it at the pub. Not punching down saying that either as I'm one

Had someone tell me yesterday that all it was was £3 a week/£12 a month and most can pay that, had to explain to him that's just not true right now. I don't think those at the top of the SFA realise some don't even have £1 to spare in this financial climate never mind £12, and I don't have a family to feed. Imagine people with families will be even worse off

I might be wrong but it's not really just £3 a week, dont you need a sky box or virgin box that needs a subscription?

I dont know what they cost, but i'm guessing it's into the £30-£40 range for the basic package with whatever you have added on?

Is it any wonder folk have IPTV, where you get everything and more for a fraction of that price.

I dont know the answer here, apart from tv companies making it much more affordable, surely their profits must be plummeting, they must be worried.

This, the crooks are the TV executives of council telly who won’t pay market value for Scottish football so allow a paywall to be in place, ironically via play put money back into the game here via sponsorship of the league cup.

Yeah it's more than that a month, I'm just repeating what someone was trying to tell me on twitter

They can get their money from me from free-to-air advertising/the TV license or they can get no money from me and I'll find a way to watch it anyway, and imagine plenty will be in the same boat. Pretty clear cut choice for them really.

I'm done paying stupid sums of money for sport over like 3 packages. There's a cost of living crisis on and I'm going to be a father.

Fully agree.

Im lucky enough to have got tickets for all the euro matches as well as the England game. It's really sparked my grandsons love of the National team. Those who can't afford to go should at least be able to see it on the telly without having a subscription.

The reason Scottish football is not on National TV is because the English bosses of our TV networks don't think it's worth spending money on.

BBC Scotlands budget is controlled by London and its minuscule. eg Linkers Wages V Sportscene costs etc.

Channel 4 bid a large amount for ENGLISH games not Scottish

Stv - a regional offshoot of ITV dont have a pot to piss in.

Channel 5 - to busy sending Jane Macdonald on a cruise...

You cant blame the SFA for this, they need to maximise every penny they can get.

Blaster

UEFA sell the rights these days not the SFA. So the blame lies with the free to air channels who don’t bid or don’t bid enough.

You don’t have to have Sky etc to get it. You can get it on your laptop etc too. Unfortunately Viaplay have the games for the next few years
