View Full Version : Handball Rule , Is it spoiling football ?

One the big issue I have with football this season beside referee's and VAR is the handball Rule , Some of the penalties that have been given are imo totally accidental and very harsh . England's penalty against Italy was one were I don't think the Italian player deliberately handled the ball and was harsh . Joe Newell against Livingston when the ball hit his knee and then his hand is another very harsh decision
Last night one of the Spanish players was screaming for a penalty after blasting the ball at the Norwegian player , it did actually hit him on the hand though it wasn't given which was the right decision , they are imo getting given though, I suppose that's why more and more in games we see defender's keeping both arms behind there backs, would doing this effect a defenders movement or balance and give the attacker a slight advantage? . It use to be hand to ball now if you fire the ball at a defender you have a good chance of a penalty. Does anyone else think this or are you quite happy with the Rules on it ?

I think some of the decisions made in England this season have been absurd. We listen to eejit co-commentators yapping about natural hand positions while watching defenders having to run with their hands behind their backs for fear of giving away a penalty. A more un-natural position would be hard to find.

You must be a referee :)

The old handball rules were fine so no idea why they changed to the stupid rules we have now. Sometimes it feels like there are people working for FIFA/UEFA who are just bored, with nothing to do, so decide to come up with changes to the game just for the sake of it.

I think when you see some of the handballs like Newell's that are immediately given and yet one like we should have had at Ibrox not given it does tend to have even the most knowledgeable football fans baffled on the rules  . Anyhow I watched this on it .

That was one of my main concerns when the rules changed, I'm sure I mentioned it on here at the time.

I've said that for years and would add that they need to have something to fix next year so that they keep their jobs.

Looks like you were right , there's a lot of games now were I'm seeing the ball being blasted at a defender and a lot of howling for a penalty afterwards . It even looks ridiculous watching a defender marking a striker with his arms behind his back in fear now , surely common sense can be used in wither a handball is deliberate or accidental ?

Looks like someone needed something to do, see the penalty rule change thread now on the board

Italy's and Netherlands' handballs were ridiculous. Maybe just me but seeing that given in such high profile games just reinforces how rubbish the rule is.

Missed the Netherlands handball though the Italy one imo the player knows nothing about it and is totally unintentional, very harsh penalty . Defender's are now having to defend against strikers with there arms in a unnatural position behind there backs instead of just defending normally like it's been for decades. I think it's going to be a very beneficial rule to Celtic and sevco when other teams travel to parkhead and Ibrox as there fans will be howling ' penalty ' everytime the balls fired of some part of the defender. It's a awful rule that's not improving the beautiful game but making it harder and less enjoyable.

Thought the England penalty against Italy was a stonewaller myself regardless of what the current rule is. The guys arm was miles out from his body and he gained an advantage from using it whether it was accidental or not.
Agree with the general point though.

Joe Newall decision wasn't harsh, it was wrong.

Whole thing has now become a farce.
May as well go the whole hog from now on that any outfield player touching the ball with his hand whether by accident/deliberate/not even getting an advantage should be deemed a foul.
This would clear up any debate. So every hand ball in the box is now a penalty.
It would negate all the inconsistencies that currently occur.
Much as I don't think this is right, VAR is highlighting every hand ball. The problems occur when the muppets (particularly in Scotland) overseeing VAR make ridiculous and often inconsistent decisions.

I just don't get this "unnatural position" thing in the context of a game of football. I want to see defenders showing off their defensive skills not standing off attackers with their hands behind their back. Totally degrades the quality of the game and was never the way football was intended.

Going by the current rules on handball it's not actually wrong, doesn't matter if it's accidental and Newell knows nothing about it ( like the Italy player) , them's the rules that are in place now. It basically means from now on if a defender doesn't have his arms behind his back or tight on his sides and a striker fires or chips the ball of the defender's hand or arm a penalty will be given wither it's unintentional or not .
In the Spain game a Spanish player did fire the ball at a defender and was howling for a penalty and last night in the Ireland game it happened again ,not only did the Irish players howl for it but the whole stadium as well . It's a really stupid rule that's spoiling football, the ball to hand rule was far better
