Hugely unsuccessful band but massively influential.

I hear shoe-gaze, grunge, slocore and there's probably a few more micro genres in there too.

Great to learn to play to.

I'm enjoying most of 22, A million. Bon Iver's new album.

It reminds me of the Avalanches "I will always love you" album, but less refined, less tuneful.

Needs a couple of listens.

Talking a trip back to the mid 90s to listen to Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. I completely dismissed this first time round as I was getting a bit carried away with Britpop and all the associated stuff but give or take a few too many out of tune hollers, it's a truly brilliant album.

Also going back through all Elliott Smith's albums, my favourite of which is Figure 8, dark and tormented but beautiful melodies.

New albums from the Alabama 3 and the Filthy Tongues.

Also re-discovering my love of Jacques Brel through Scott Walker.

And likely to get the new album by Hi-fi Sean and David McAlmont.

Oh, also .... in the light of David Lindley's passing.... replaying almost everything he ever did.

I read a biography of Scott last year. Back then good English translations of Brel's lyrics were at a premium. Walker got wind through his tin pan alley connections of a guy who was producing translations which he eventually used. The translator for some reason wanted to stay anonymous but also wanted paid so this led to Walker meeting a middle man on a specified park bench, handing over the cash and getting the lyrics. The middle man was singer Kenny Lynch.

I've been listening to Joe Pass' remastered Virtuoso album. Came across it doing something I seen on Twitter a while back. Basically going to the year you were born and searching through and listening to albums released in that year. I seem to be particularly blessed having 1973 as my birth year!! I'd never hear of Joe Pass and never really got into Jazz, found it on a specific Jazz search for 1973. I have been doing this for well over a year now and I still have loads to go through, in fact it could become a lifelong exercise! I use sites like Rate Your Music and Allmusic.com for the lists and I have Apple music which seems to have most of the albums apart from the very obscure ones. I listen to everything, stuff I have heard before and stuff I have never heard of, I keep the albums I like and delete the ones that don't appeal.

One of my favourite albums of that time was 50 years old last weekend. The Captain and Me by the Doobie Brothers.

And so was Dark Side of the Moon.

Great story :greengrin Thanks.

When I was young, Kenny Lynch was "showbiz", so I had little interest in him. Having read more about him since he died, he was pretty "rock and roll".

I've done a tiny bit digging about the Brel translation, and wonder if it was Mort Schuman, who wrote a lot of early rock & roll hits.

Like most rock fans, I've been listening to a lot of Sleep Token lately. Also been enjoying a lot of Spanish Love Songs (a beautiful, obscure little pop-punk band).

At the heavier end, Invent Animate released a new album on Friday and I can't stop listening to it.

At the extreme end, I've been dipping my toe into deathcore music and Lorna Shore's "Pain Remains" album is phenomenal (but intense, especially if you don't listen to heavy rock).

I'm off to see Death Cab for Cutie at the Usher Hall on Wednesday so their discography and new album, Asphalt Meadows has been getting some good time in my ears.

For a long time, I think he tried not to be his old man. But, once he realised he couldn't outrun genetics, he seemed to be much more comfortable with what he does.

It's a similar formula to Ian. Mix an "uncultured" voice with a band that is a million miles away from that. Worked for Dad, and I think it works for the (51 year old ) boy.

As an aside, I saw the Blockheads last year at the Voodoo Rooms. So good. :not worth

Yeah, dickie was an exceptional guitarist. His style seemed to perfectly compliment Frankie Stubbs guitar as well.

Always felt that with better production Minx would be up there as well, shame it's never been remastered.

Although Andy Laing wasn't with them for the stormy petrel that is another incredible album.

Dickie was excellent in HDQ and Dr Bison as well, worth checking out if you haven't already heard them.

They were signed up to a major label after that album and were expected to be another of the breakout punk bands of the time along with offspring and green day. It all unravelled whilst they were recording their major label debut and it flopped while they split up.

The Beatles Live at the BBC. They were first and foremost a cracking wee rock and roll band. Even the show tunes worked and Lennon was surprisingly just as partial to them as McCartney.

I thought they did the stuff from the crack and in a rut, staring at the rude boys, west one shine on me etc really well. Was really impressed with them.

Kill the pain had the the place rocking. Jah War went down a storm too.

Been listening to a lot of Mayday Parade lately - especially their latest release, 'What It Means to Fall Apart'. I've loved this band for 15 years now, since they released 'A Lesson In Romantics'.

They were the first band I seen live as we came out of lockdown and I was a bit of a wreck seeing them. Hoping they'll be back in the UK later this year/next year.

The Dead South is another new discovery to me, bluegrass/country sort of stuff.

Good Company is the album.

I like Apple Musics play similar function, you hear lots of different stuff but it seems to intersperse songs that you have listened to in the same genre as well. Whether by luck or by design I don't know.

What a great album this is. Been listening to it all weekend.

I keep listening to it and I keep discovering things I never noticed on the previous listens.

Their ability to seemlessly transition from jazz elements, to RnB style flows, the genuinely heavy, metalcore/deathcore breakdowns in places is sheer genius.

The title track and Ascensionism are works of art.

My vynil copy arrived today. Its a decent enough album, but it's not great. Fear that they might have peaked with "Out come..." and "Dominoes " . Still a great live band.

I think it's a pretty solid album and I love new American, although it sounds more like an early swingin utters song than a rancid one

For me it will always be the first 3 rancid albums that are their best work.

I haven't heard of Lars stuff with last resort as I really don't like them so not sure about that. I was pretty impressed with Tim Armstrong's last album, a poets life.

Maybe I’ve been asleep under a rock, but this morning I heard a song called ‘Let The Light Shine Over You’. Turns out it’s from an album, called Far From Saints by a group by the same name. I discovered it was none other than Kelly Jones with a duo, Patty Lynn and Dwight Baker of the American band The Wind and The Wave. The songs are terrific and the vocal harmonies of Jones and Lynn are awesome in my opinion. If this is old hat, fine, but if you enjoy Country, Folk, Rock I think you’ll love it.

Ren Gill's new album Sick Boi is looking like it will chart at No2 or No1 this week quite stunning for a totally independent artist who has been in Canada for the last year getting treatment for Lymes disease and therefore not able to promote it. His online following keeps growing and this album is brilliant. A lot of his known stuff on it but some of the new tracks are mind blowing. I preordered the album, got it this week and have only listened to it, nothing else. The album is basically a Hiphop album which harks back to the massive genre defining artists of the 90s with lots of references and homages made. It still has it's own voice and highlights the skills of Ren as an artist. He produces his own beats and his lyrics are simply stunning, check out "Seven Sins" for a masterclass on lyrical weaving. There are a few bangers in there too with Lost all Faith, Masochist and Down on the Beat. Weirdly he is fighting it our with Rick Astley for No1 spot in the charts. This week is the first time I have paid attention to the charts for about 40 years and I am genuinely excited for this guy and hope he gets the top spot.

Enjoyed it too. More than I expected. Stones been my favourite band for many years.

There’s almost wee shades of some of their 70s and 80s work. Like you say, you’re not sitting listening to it picturing pensioners.

I came on here to post about Ren, been listening to the guy constantly since Hi Ren earlier in the year, the boy is special, he can do it all, he is changing the game, and with said Illnesses as well, hell of an achievement. So happy he got the number 1 album, not been bothered about the charts for about 25 years, but was really hoping he would get it.

I implore everyone to check out his song and video, 'Hi Ren'.

Picked up the S cumbag Millionaire album, all time low, which came out couple of months back. It's very good indeed and similar to Scandinavian punk from 90s and early 2000s. Think Turbonegro and the hellacopters, more so the former imho.

Also getting a bit of play just now are the classic 80s hardcore ep Pick your King by Poison Idea and wanna smash sensation by Canadian 90s pop punkers BUM.

The YouTube algorithm chucked David Gilmour's new track out at me last night, "Between two points", David on guitar with his daughter Romany singing on it. Really nice relaxing music with a typically great DG solo closing the track off. It is off his new album due out later this year. I am a bit of a fan boy when it comes to DG so you'll only get positive notes from me about any of his music but I think it is worth checking the track out.

I seem to have been going through a Chicago phase recently. Naked Raygun, Pegboy, Dwarves, Sludgeworth and Screeching Weasel getting heavy play just now.I knew Deek Allen for a short while when he lived around Portobello, I hung around that area with a few skinheads and spoke to him regularly as he had not long formed Oi Polloi and we were starting up a band and they wanted us to hook up with them to support in local gigs, unfortunately we got no further than aimlessly thrashing around on **** kit purchased from Bostons second hand shop on Leith Walk. My bass send 240 volts through my arms and the guitarists 100w amp blew up which almost set fire to St Martins church hall.

We called it a day after that 😁 Oi Polloi changed style to a more imo distasteful super charged Anarcho-punk and I think other than Deek they had a revolving door put on their tour bus as I think they went through around 50 or 60 band members, I preferred them as an Oi band but fair play as they still have a core following, not bad for a band who started in the 80s.

I vaguely remember Win with their beer advert song. On a down day I like to blast off some Blitz, particularly Voice of a Generation.
