Read today that ex- french striker ' Just Fontaine ' had passed away at the age of 89 and to be honest I had never heard of him though when I checked up on him he certainly seemed a really good striker and will be best remembered for his 1958 FIFA world cup performance when he scored 13 goals in just 6 matches - a feat that included him putting 4 past defending champions west Germany. It's a record that still stands today and probably won't be beaten either imo .

The 1958 World Cup was the first one I took an interest in so he was etched into this wee boy's memory. Averaged nearly a goal a game in his career and way more than that for France.
I hadn't realised he joined Reims the season after we played them in the European Cup. Retired early due to injury, but what a career.

I was aware of him for the World Cup record (such a stalwart of sports trivia questions back in the day!) but I didn’t know until reading the obituary today that he was Moroccan. Such a rich seam of French national team talent from that diaspora; Fontaine through Zidane and Benzema.

Didn't realize that so it could have been 15 . He was once asked would anyone break his record? ,. He simply reply no that it would be to much a task for any player needing to average 2 goals in each of the 7 matches.I think Gerard Muller has been the closest with 10 .Pele had him in his 125 all time greatest players and his goal scoring record is quite outstanding.
