What team did Allan carry?
Pretty Boy
27-02-2023, 08:14 PM
I would say the Leighton and Jackson from late 1995 through us surviving the play off in 97 was the most notable in my lifetime. They moved on and we were immediately relegated the following year. A good team had really started to break up and they were the biggest difference between mediocrity and dross. Between them they were worth 15+ points a season to us, both match winners in their own way.
Griffiths in that season under Fenlon is a close second.
Sauzee and Latapy were huge players to get us out the 1st Division but the likes of Mixu was always transformative for us that season and carried it on into the next. I suppose we did see how much we missed Sauzee when he was unavailable for selection for himself mind you......

Jackson and Griffiths definitely. Also Michael O'Neill prior to Newcastle offering £1 million for him.

Boyle but also I would say Jackie McNamara for Hibs

Jim Leighton and Darren Jackson for about 18 months up to and including the Airdrie play off saved an awful team from relegation.

Yes, Jackie was our stand out player during the dire years of Auld and Stanton.
Des Bremner springs to mind. Relegated the season after Des left.

I'd never heard of Irvine to be honest! Seems he scored a lot of goals in a relatively short period for us.
Not sure Allan ever carried us. Griffiths most certainly did. I'd add Jim Leighton too.

If you are talking about one man bands carrying a bad team on their backs, I would say Jackson, Goram, Leighton and Griffiths. Probably in that order too.

Did not realise how good he was until after he left big holes started to appear all over the park
Always left everything out on the pitch his jersey always covered in sweat
At least we got Joe Ward out of the deal ?

Joe Ward! Jesus what are you trying to me man?
I was young then and used to watch guys like Ali Scott, Joe Ward, Stuart Turnbull, Gary Murray etc and used to convince myself they were going to come good in the end. The really tragic thing is I still feel like that about some players.

Benny Brazil and Super Joe Tortolano - did the Joe Newell role of plugging away and taking all the flack to let everyone else get on with just playing.

All of the above, but Alan Rough would get it for me in his first season at Hibs.

That play off in Cumbernauld in ‘97 was massive
You could almost touch the tension in the air
I looked behind me and there sat Joe Baker Lawrie Reilly and Pat Stanton
In true Hibs style we fell behind after only 90 seconds for Airdrie to square the tie on the night
Darren Jackson and Jim Leighton both showed the courage and experience required to hold their nerve and keep us in the top flight

Yes I remember it well. Jackson took the game by the throat and kept us up
Lex Gold decided to cash in and sold Jackson and we were relegated the following season. Must rank as one of the worst decisions ever made by the board.

Given how well he was playing at the time I'd be amazed if the primary driver of the move wasn't Jackson, and that there was little Gold could do other than to hold out for as much as he could get.
Losing Geebsie, Jackson and Leighton that summer and failing to replace them undoubtedly relegated us but I'd be amazed if there was more Hibs could have done to keep Jackson. Anyone could see how important he was to us.

Dunno about that. He was good but Ben Williams, Claros and Doyle all had very decent seasons. Williams saved half a dozen penalties.

Wotherspoon played well and got a few goals that season too.
Losing Griffiths, Doyle and Wotherspoon that summer was a disaster, even if Griffiths was the biggest loss by a distance.

Agree with most on here but one out of left field...... we would have been relegated in 2011/12 if it wasn't for James McPake IMO. Wasn't until 12/23 that Griffiths was incredible for us.

As much as his career hasn't went the way I expected. Griffiths was amazing for us, for Celtic too tbh. But one of the times for us he pretty much carried that team. There were other good players but if he wasn't in the team we struggled to get a win by hardly scoring at all.
