Was on transfermarket last night looking through the old hibs teams and where are they now. Clicked john mcginn and said we paid 1.1 million for him to st mirren

Our previous transfer record was 900 thousand for de la cruz.

Possibly if you include their sell on %, but given he was out of contract and we only paid training compensation, I'd be amazed if it was anywhere near what we paid for de la cruz.

I think that will include a decent sell on clause from when he joined Villa.

Pretty sure he’s now the record fee received by St Mirren, beating the £850k they received for Ian Ferguson from Rangers. Decent trivia answer as nobody really expects Hibs to have paid St Mirren their record fee but it’s true.

I’m sure the touted figure for McGinn was £200k, with all parties happy that St Mirren had a decent sell on clause:

£700k was always the figure that was made public for Ulises de la Cruz.

Alex McLeish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_McLeish), the manager of Scottish Premier League (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Premier_League) club Hibernian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernian_F.C.), watched de la Cruz play in international matches for Ecuador, and then signed him in June 2001 for a club record fee of £700,000

Transfer market is as factual as Hibs.net

He'd no long been speared by thingy Thompson. You wouldnae pay that much for a boy with a javelin in his leg.

I think what you need to take from this is that transfermarket is a very unreliable source.

That’s a good point.

I'm not convinced that what we paid for McGinn should include what Hibs subsequently passed on from Aston Villa, but even if you did include that, you have to consider inflation when comparing it to previous transfer fees.

For instance, if Hibs paid £900k in 2001 for De La Cruz, that's actually the equivalent of £1.35M in 2015, when we signed McGinn (and is roughly £1.8M today).

On that theme, we paid Celtc £420k to re-sign Pat McGinley in 1994, the equivalent of which would be paying £1M in 2023.

For some reason £160,000 for McGinn rings bells (did someone work this out from the 2016 Annual Accounts maybe?) with "significant" add-ons reported at the time.

He was out of contract but no real interest from elsewhere and his proposed move to MLS had fallen through.

Our transfer record isn't £900k. About 200k short of that.

St Mirren accepted a lower development fee than they initially wanted due to McGinn dropping legal action against the club over loss of earnings in relation to their club captain stabbing him in the leg with a training pole.
