Sad to read this. He was an exceptional keeper in that United side and at St Mirren.

I think he was in goal at Hampden for my first ever Scotland match, World Cup qualifier v Northern Ireland in 1981 (Roughie went off injured, I'm sure).

Great keeper for Utd & St.Mirren, very sad news.

The very sad news indeed!
Billy was a very good keeper, 64 far to young,
condolences to his family and friends.

Was he their keeper in the excellent side of the 1980s?

Took over from Hamish McAlpine if I remember correctly. Very sad news. RIP

Really sad sad news. RIP Billy one of my favourite away goalies as a kid when he came to ER.

That is very sad news. I’m sure he started out as understudy to Roughie at Partick. Very good keeper and I think he was still coaching until fairly recently. RIP Billy.

Primarily remember him at Motherwell and as back up at Rangers.

My memory may be playing tricks but I though he maybe played for Rangers at ER, we might even have won. Could have been Colin Scott or Ally Maxwell though.

He was very we thought off as a goalkeeping coach. Up there with the likes of Jim Stewart and Alan Hodgkinson in that regard which is high praise.

RIP.

Good keeper and yet another whose tally of international caps said more about the competion for his spot than it did about his own abilities.

Sticks in my mind for two reasons - the trackie bottoms which were not very common for British keepers and being part of the team that schooled Barcelona over two legs. Very vague memories of John Clark scoring in the closing minutes tp restore the overall lead at Camp Nou. Barca were a very decent side then, with Lineker and Hughes upfront.

Synonymous with those great UEFA cup matches in 1987 making saves gainst Barca and the likes. RIP

He's here!

Good keeper in a very good St Mirren side of the early 80s. Fell out with Alex Miller IIRC and got sold to United. RIP.

Another sign that we are all getting older, when another player you grew up watching passes away. R.I.P. Billy

A brilliant goalkeeper and shot stopper taken too soon

I was reminded yesterday on Twitter by a former poster on here recalling in tribute a brilliant one handed save from a Gordon Rae header that was almost Gordon Banksesque in it’s execution that was typical Billy Thomson

Deepest sincerest condolences to family and friends

RIP

I remember going to Tannadice as a child for a friend's birthday party. As the players walked off at the end of the match, we started a chant of 'Billy, give us a wave'. Our childish voices somehow reached Billy's ears and he looked up and obliged us with a big wave. A great moment for a bunch of kids! Thanks for the memory Billy.

I went to this game with my son. My memory was that Billy Thomson played a blinder, the highlights here confirmed that my memory is not fading as fast as it might!

As well as his performance, interesting to see....
John Brown conceding a free kick after about 15 seconds, was wearing the wrong blue strip in those days, so didn't get away with it
Bannon and Duffy with hair
Keith W
Some of the tackles made me wince now (I'm becoming a wimp!)
A decent commentary

and having a ref from the top flight who actually was not West of Scotland - though SFA probably picked him only to save travel costs

That St.Mirren game was my first, if it's the same one - finished 1-0 to Hibs with a Tony Higgins goal (we defo had the yellow strip on that day, and it was 1978).

Which means Billy Thomson was in goal for my first Hibs match as well as my first Scotland game! Ach, makes me feel sadder still to hear of Billy's death. 64 isnae an auld man nowadays.

The very same game

Billy Thomson was that good he held the ba rather than claw it round the post

You can see the look of disappointment of big Gogs’ face as he looks up expecting to see the ba in the pokey

Thanks for that. The STV cameras were there, but I've never been able to find the highlights. I won't pretend to recall exactly what the goal was like, but pretty sure it took a goal of the season contender from big Higgins to beat Billy that day.
