We all know that Hibernian FC are great football pioneers and are the first in many fields, so I don't need to make a list. However I just came across a Wikipedia article named "football chants" which lists Hibernian as being the first team to have a chant recorded in 1887.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_chant#History

Football fans' vocalisations came in the forms of cries, chants and songs in the 19th century. War cries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_cry) were known to have been used by football fans from the 1880s onwards, with the earliest recorded in Scotland after the Scottish Cup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Cup) final of 1887 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1886%E2%80%9387_Scottish_Cup).

According to the source the chant was a war cry called the "Easter Road Whisper".

Just as the company were about to leave the hall someone proposed that before parting they should give the "Hibs" the "Easter Road Whisper" a demonical ear splitting yell instantly followed, compared with which the famous war cry of the cherokees was mildness itself

Has anyone else heard of the Easter Road Whisper? Are there any other references to it anywhere? Has it survived at all into modern times? I do recall on occasion some Hibernian fans going "wooooooooooooooooo". I first heard this during the 1988-89 season at Parkhead during the half-time interval, a game we lost 1-0. However the cry went on for almost the entirety of the half-time break. It sounded a bit like a war cry, though it would not fit the definition of "demonical ear splitting yell".

First I’ve heard of it. I don’t remember Lugton making reference to it in his books either

Was it not a chocolate bar made by Cadburys especially for Hibs that the macaroon sellers sold in the olden days? 🤔

Probably " Whelehan must go" or " Boooo."

I suspect it was something closer to this.

That’s absolutely brilliant. Wish I had the lung power for that these days.
