Strange sad story I was unaware of. On this day in 1918, was what became known as the Battle of May Island.
A series of naval accidents around the Isle of May led to the deaths of 105 British sailors and the sinking of two WWI submarines.

This book was published about it a number of years ago. I remember flicking through in a charity shop and being quite shocked as, like you, I'd not been aware of it. IIRC those culpable got off quite lightly but I might be wrong. Seems to be worth a bit of money now:
