IF the jazz, classical and traditional music programmes that BBC Scotland intends to axe weren’t very good it would be difficult to make a case for saving them. http://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/23268392.bbc-football-analysis-semi-literate-statement-obvious/?ref=appshr

Can't see the article. Possibly behind a pay wall?

Can read the comments though. There aren't half a few special head cases who frequent The Herald these days.

But some of the programmes under threat are very good indeed and meet the corporation’s target to deliver cultural programmes of a high quality across various platforms.
In particular, they might want to look at their dreadful coverage of football on radio. BBC Scotland pays the Scottish football authorities millions for exclusive coverage of the Scottish Professional Football League.
Effectively, it uses its privileged, state-funded position to cut all the independent stations out of the picture. In any other industry this would amount to unfair competition.

What makes this even more regrettable is that what passes for commentary and analysis of football on Radio Scotland is a long, rambling, semi-literate statement of the bloody obvious. It’s devoid of innovation, wit or cold, objective analysis. And it has a record of failing to stand up for its journalists whenever they attempt to speak truth to power.

In the west of Scotland, it’s easily outgunned by Radio Clyde which, with far fewer resources, is everything Radio Scotland’s football coverage is not: witty, intelligent, and no strangers to the English language.

The BBC already commissions programmes from the independent sector. I’d be thinking about outsourcing its expensive and unsatisfying football coverage to Clyde and some of the other independents.

One of the very few areas in life in which an unrestrained free market could only improve the outcome.

Radio Scotland's football 'coverage' is a completely undisguised mixture of the usual dull obsession with the Ugly Sisters combined with fawning over the clubs supported by the presenters and staff (currently mainly Aberdeen and Hearts), ill-informed bias against other clubs and a willingness to massively over-indulge individuals they choose to adopt as their favourites.

Often completely unprofessional and partisan in their reactions during games and utterly unoriginal in their coverage.

They certainly need some new voices on BBC Scotland. Willie Miller and Pat Bonner? Jeez.
Strangely, I don't mind Alan Preston. At least he's genuinely enthusiastic and that's refreshing.

Agree. In shorter order they all sound as thick as a docker’s piece.

Radio Scotlands football coverage is stuck in another era. A bit like Only An Excuse, it has failed to evolve and its definitely an auld pals network.
Time for so many of the presenters and pundits to be put out to grass.
Pat Bonner, Willie Miller...their time has come and gone - not that Bonner ever had much of interest to say.
Preston is not able to contain his bias and he's just a pain.
We're short changed up here in terms of punditry. There's not much strength or depth.

McCoist is head and shoulders above any Scottish pundit. A rare combination of experience, enthusiasm and humour. Never thought I'd see the day I'd say that.

I’ve said for years I have no idea why old Packy got that gig. He does nothing but comment on Celtic games and offers nothing insightful. Nothing. He’s a Celtic fan who gets to watch them for free all over the land. Its a disgrace.

I was nodding my head in agreement with the 1st 3/4 of your post, then I read the last paragraph

Any football player who smashes an opposition player in the face and runs away and hides, is a no mark. A hun cant of the highest order.

It happened 37 years ago for heavens sake. Doesn’t affect his status as the best Scottish pundit.

Crossing the road without waiting for the green man would be enough to cause outrage amongst some on here 🥴

The more and more I hear Richard Forster the less and less I can stand the guy.
What happened to his much heralded move to America?? He’s been seen and heard numerous times since

Was that Kevin Mckenna? Sure I read that on Sunday in the national.

Before the game on Sunday, McCoist was more than happy to pose for selfies with Hibs fans of all ages, despite that bloody overhead kick

He is one of the best pundits around and usually calls it as he sees it. It’s only during OF derbies that he swithers but that is totally understandable,

He is miles ahead of any football reporters/pundits on the Beeb.

Aye it’s a shame there the only people who cover it on the radio in as much detail, it’s also easy to listen to on the app and stuff.

I tune in semi regularly wishfully thinking it might have got better, i actually think it gets worse.

Old dinosaurs shouting over each other with their irrelevant and out if touch opinions.

The weekly terrace podcast is miles better at covering Scottish football imo, even if there are a few jambos on it.

Off the Ball is just as bad, if not worse.
