Used to love the Boxing Day sales back in the 90s, see if you could get some cheap designer gear.

Would I be a cynic to suggest a tad convenient?

Not a cheap building to maintain with no income coming from it. I hope and trust it was started accidentally.

Thank goodness it's empty. Not the easiest building to navigate your way in or out. Liked it as a store for the odd bargain, but shocking layout for able bodied people, can't imagine how anyone physically disabled shopped in there. Hope they get the fire out quick and everyone assisting keeps safe.

Fire engines and ambulances still arriving on scene, there must be a worry that there is squatters in the building for the amount of ambulances parked along Princess Street, or that the fire is spreading to other buildings.

Isn't it Ashley that owns it? Suspiciously convenient

He only every rented the building for HOF. Building is going through a lot of works and redevelopment for the hotel and shops that are planned for it

Seemingly there’s been an explosion and there is casualties 😢

Edit: unsure of explosion, but definitely casualties

Think the owners are Danish, brothers that were converting it into a hotel.

Its not been empty, has been quite a bit of work going on within.

Someone said they were taking glue off a wooden floor and its been part of that process thats caused the fire.

Was undergoing a huge rip out and renovation, some of the uncovered gems of original architecture were magnificent as have seen some photos. I worked for Jenners for ten happy years, hope they can save the building. It doesn’t look good BBC video shows it well alight inside.

It was easy when you knew how, disabled entrance on Rose Street and then lifts could get you everywhere even in a wheelchair.

I could never get past the perfume section without having a minor asthma attack.

As fantastic as these old building are they are such warrens that they must be a nightmare to navigate when there is a fire.

It reminds me of the Cowgate fire all those years ago. It took a not inconsiderable amount of time to establish that there was one big fire and for the extent of the blaze to become apparent because there were differing reports from various different buildings quite a bit apart. Iirc it was when a door to an old lift shaft was opened that firefighters realised just what they were dealing with.

When it traded it had fire shutters throughout the building to compartmentalise in the event of a fire. There was a dedicated lock up team that closed these shutters and doors after closing time. It certainly was a rabbit Warren but to me and other who worked there for a long time it was just a corner shop 😀

Hope everyone makes a full recovery. I saw something that said a heat gun was being used to remove decades old glue and the place just went up.
