If anyone was wondering why we signed him then today is why. Thought he was terrific and credit to him for coming back after a long injury and producing that type of performance at his age. Made a big difference today.

Even those of us who questioned his signing did so because we thought he would hardly play due to injury. At the moment we were right but I hope in the next few months we get to be proved wrong. He has always been a clever player and delivered results. We also don't have enough different characters and experience and he provides both of those ingredients, a very experienced moaner. McGeady, if fit, is a decent signing but he was unlikely to play all season imo and so that has come to pass. He may have another year or two at this level given how poor Scottish football is at the moment.

Been some strange criticisms about him not wanting to be here and things like that. The way he applied himself in the game today show those comments up for what they are IMO.

He played very well today, but if we're being honest that was his first meaningful contribution in a Hibs shirt and we're in January. So far this signing has been a disaster.
Hopefully he can stay fit, because if he does it looks like he'll contribute a lot (more than I had imagined last summer) as he still drifts past players like they're not there at times, he has a surprisingly good burst of pace for a player his age and his quality and calmness on the ball when others around him are panicking is invaluable. More of the same please, Aiden!

He wasn’t livid until Henderson bizarrely started moaning at him for not being 5 yards further ahead, which would have made him offside.

Henderson needs a hand. He needs the older guys to cajole him. Ironically, a younger McGeady would have been on that ball in a flash.
I’m hoping McGeady could be the character that brings the best out of Henderson.

A fair point, and you would think we’d have been talking about looking up not down had all 3 been fit all season. Although it’s also offset by the amount of square pegs we have to put in round holes like Campbell & Stevenson both playing at RB today or Porteous having to move into midfield.
Not a fan of McGeady, and he’s been terrible value so far due to injury. However based on today still looks quality if we can only keep him fit.

I wasn’t that enthusiastic about the signing either, it felt like a signing that wasn’t going to work…but he was doing things with the ball today in wide positions that I haven’t seen for a long time from a Hibs player. Could help Melkerson and Youans development working with someone like that in training.

Think he's just that type of character. He knows anything he says will be ran with as a headline, him and Lee are pretty close I've heard so I think it's more a case of say nothing and nothing can get twisted/used against him later on from the media as he's always had a target on his back up here with the media.

Agree I just think that’s what McGeady is like with the press. I think if anyone is demanding higher standards and telling players it’s not good enough McGeady would be one of the first to air his voice.
Delighted he’s back though, quality and composure in abundance and still incredibly sharp and fast for his age.
I’ve no idea what he done to the two Motherwell players in the first half on the left wing (neither did they) but it was brilliant.

Aren’t they more likely to run a headline and twist his words when he doesn’t back him, like that?
I couldn’t really care what he does or doesn’t say if he keeps putting in performances but I don’t see how if he’d given the usual “we’re all behind the manager” type line it would have caused him any problems with the media.

Thought McGeady was class yesterday, plenty of graft to go with the guile. He showed a lot of hunger without the ball too. Was also surprised with the turn of pace he showed at 36.

There’s no doubting from what we’ve seen recently that he’s looked a quality player but I don’t think it’s that unreasonable to suggest he had to prove he still was.
He missed a huge amount of last season, didn’t get a new contract at Sunderland, came to us and got another long term injury. At his age it could well have finished him. Thankfully it doesn’t look like he has, but at 36 I’m not sure you can use the fact he was a quality player as evidence that he’ll still be a quality player. Shefki Kuqi and Johannson are evidence of that.

It’s not forgotten. We should be a top 4 side in this division but take away 3 or 4 players and we look garbage. If goals are hard to come by because attacking players are injured you expect at least to be organised and hard to break down… we are very far from being a good side right now.

Absolutely. He's a leader in the dressing room and on the park and having him back is massive. He'll be driving the rest on and demanding high standards. Tend to agree to an extent we should be more organised and harder to beat ironically defensively we were ok in the earlier part of the season. Yesterday kind of showed us we we could have had injuries aside attacking wise. No team will not be impacted by their most creative players missing for significant periods. I do think some of the more negative views do not at all appear to have much context just mostly overly personalised rants.

I also liked the way that he made himself accountable for laying on goals and scoring goals which is something we’ve had trouble with for a long time. Some think he’s awkward but I just think he makes a decision on what’s important and sticks to it, then giving zero F’s about that which he finds extraneous.

Didnt have any issue in him saying that. He is absolutely right that talking from players doesnt mean much. I do worry he will not get much protection from the refs in this country who definitely allow more clogger play than other leagues.

Yeah i watched that. He didnt reveal much about the whole episode to be honest. It was interesting how bitter he clearly is towards Strachan. Clearly hates him and not a big Neil Lennon fan either. What a career hes had, must have been one of the most dangerous wide players in Europe in 2007/8. it was quite funny what he was saying about celebrating in Novos face just before the post match scrap in the OF derby :greengrin Also id forgotten Marshall was a teammate of his for 4 years.

McCarthy was the one who explicitly chose to play for Ireland from a young age because he supported Celtic. McGeady's was more circumstantial than anything, but I won't lie and say it's impacted my attitude towards him - that and the "Hibs are just like Celtic" stuff when he first signed.
Regardless, he's clearly a talented player and one that I'm glad to have at the club.

He was on Celtic's books, they wouldn't allow signings to play for their school. The National School team couldn't pick him as he didn't play for a school. Ireland made a move and he accepted, probs due to their rules being a wee bit less annoying. :greengrin

That’s right. Celtc claimed the fixture times clashed which meant he couldn’t play schools as well, which is probably true. I think it had a lot to do with the pro youth vs boys clubs tension which if you’re involved in boys football you’ll be all too familiar with :greengrin Plus the usual west coast mafia SFA inflexibility.

He was on Celtic's books, they wouldn't allow signings to play for their school. The National School team couldn't pick him as he didn't play for a school. Ireland made a move and he accepted, probs due to their rules being a wee bit less annoying. :greengrin
Thanks. I knew it was something to do with him as a youngster.

Added to that , by the time he got to full call up level, he then had had 5 years of playing at all sorts of age group levels for Ireland and he felt a connected part of their teams …can completely understand why he made that decision

What surprised me was Mcgeady not coming out backing the manager in the interview.
Sure there was a poster on here claimed that mcgeady told the players when he signed that johnson is a snake so might not be much love there

McGeady is class and still has that pace over a few yards to get past players. Going to be a huge player for us if he can stay fit and I'd be talking to him about adding another year on to his contract.

Hi
Aye I was surprised thought he was like 5ft7!
You are right, that quickness over 5-10 yards is what sets him apart.
No it’s the speed between the ears that’s most important.

More likely a combination of the two.

That was it. He was willing to play for Scotland but it was the schools ruling.

Long time ago so could be memory failing me but I recall him saying pretty clear and adamantly when asked at the time, in an interview, that he had chosen to play for Ireland and referenced his grandmother in his reasoning.
Have I made that up/dreamed it?

He's on record as saying it was because he couldn't play for Scotland schoolboys when he was 14.

Sounds like sheite again. Just someone stoking the anti LJ fires.
Why would he have signed for him if that was the cas? He'd have plenty alternatives.

He is hardly likely to say anything else is he? FWIW, I think he is genuine and I’m glad he is fit and raring to go, a quality player who will make a difference,

Really good interview there and i agree with everything he says.
Regardless of what you think of the manager he has had no luck whatsoever with injuries and it could be argued he deserves a bit of time with a more settled squad hopefully augmented with a couple of new signings this month.

Yip. As long as we start to pick up a reasonable amount of points, let’s judge him at the end of the season in a more controlled way .
Our injuries have almost been exclusively long term losses of our best players Magennis, McGeady, Nisbet, Boyle . Most teams would be seriously impacted by the loss of their four star players . That’s tough for any manager to handle. Not saying he has done well enough, but it’s a major factor to be recognised.

At least you’ve had the balls to admit you are calling me a liar. I’ve already explained my views on him and why I have them, but the idea that I’d make things up to justify my stance to hundreds of Hibs fans I’ve never met is laughable. Rather than accuse me of making things up, flip it round and consider part of the reason I dislike him is down to the things I have heard, most of which I’ve never posted.

So again you dislike someone you don't know(and post your feelings constantly about the person on a message board) based on things you have heard from someone else, bit weird but each to their own

That’s not how I explained my stance, but you go on making your assumptions about my thoughts. We will never agree on this so let’s leave it there.

Sometimes they say you don’t appreciate someone until they’re gone…
But we’re now starting to see the sort of difference McGeady, Nisbet and Magennis can make. McGeady especially we’re only able to appreciate now he’s back.
It’s unlikely to be one of our best and most memorable seasons but providing we can keep these guys fit it should be far from the disaster that many feared it was going to turn into.

Such a shame we have lost Boyle from the mix. All of a sudden we'd have some real quality in the team. We still do to an extent.

When you look at our forwards it to me is as good as anyone's in the league (outside the old firm) if not even better , problems been they've all been out injured Boyle now , Nisbet, Mcgeady, Mykola . Still think we aren't to far away from having a good team , couple of quality midfielders , centre half and maybe a right back away ?

I agree. Squad, or at least the starting 11, doesn't need major surgery just a couple of quality additions. I know they are hard to come by.
