For years I've been shaving with a Gillette Mach 3 and found it very good though last year and a half I've found the blades really not as good as they were .( Maybe it's just me ) I've tried electric shavers but can't take to them . Was just wondering if anyone was using a different Razor that they thought was good ? Any advice as always appreciated 👍

Appreciate you and the other posters advice , can you tell me what razor and blades cost ? And how long your using it for ?

£8 to buy the razor and £8 for a pack of 4 replacement blades, the blades last at least 6 shaves for me (although I prefer to always be clean shaven so that probably reduces the likeliness of it going blunt) before it starts to feel like I could be doing with a replacement. Hope this helps

I also like to be clean shaven too , Gillette Mach 3 imo was very good but as I said over the last year and a half it hasn't really given me a decent shave ! I'm certainly going to check out your recommendation and appreciate your advice 👍

I think I might be able to find a code mate to order online and get some kind of discount I think it gets you the starter set for something like £3:99 cost of postage, I'll try to look it out.

Buy a double edge safety razor. You won't regret it.
The razor itself is a bit more pricey than a cartridge razor, a good one probably starts at about £25-30, but the replacement blades are far cheaper.

Grow a beard instead. You will save money and time, can join the craft beer supping hipster fraternity and if you grow it bushy enough you can not only keep small mammals as pets in there, but can ‘be’ Zander Clark during kickabouts with the kids and make deliberate mistakes to keep your family entertained.

Harry's give a really close shave due to the multiple blades but I find them a bit unwieldy around the nose due to their size/flatness.
The smaller Gillette Sensors I find better for the more awkward angles.

Rockwell safety razor with adjustable settings. I had a Harry's but grew to hate it. You get a closer shave, the blades cost almost nothing, the razor itself will last you the rest of your life and its more sustainable all round. Only downside is the initial purchase price would be higher than a normal razor but it works out far cheaper in the long run.
Razor price on amazon is £44
Pack of 100 safety razor blades on amazon £4.99

That's a great price. A tenner buys a hundred Astra blades which are a good match for this razor. Three shaves from each blade saves a fortune.

In every retail job I've had, men's razor's/replacement heads are the most stolen item. They sometimes remove the security cases/tags or just take them too. Are people not getting offered them in the pub at half the price?? I was offered sirloin steak once at a bus stop in G. It really doesn't have to be.
I bought a razor for £30 10 years ago and it will last me for at least another decade yet. A pack of 100 blades costs me about £16 and lasts me the best part of 18 months.
I couldn't go back to a cartridge razor now. Firstly because I don't like the shave you get from one and secondly because the pricing is scandalous.

Depending on what you're looking for really. Cost? Double edged safety razor, a good one can be had for £20-£30, I bought one around 10 years ago and it's still like new (although I'm a bit OCD with it, I clean it well after every use), 100 astra blades cost me less than a tenner 2 years ago and I've still got about 20 of them. I only shave once or twice a week though. Tend to find myself just trimming these days.
Best shave I ever had was after I got a straight razor, bought and sent over from Germany. It's a helluva ride though when you're just learning. I dropped it one day and went to catch it, nearly lost a finger!

Really appreciate all the advice apart from the grow a beard one , sorry H , I can't even go a day without shaving and the thought of having a GUINNESS and IRISH STEW beard doesn't appeal to me much 😂. Really fed up with the Gillette Mach 3 it's became very poor imo . Thanks to you all I've 3 choices now Harry's razors , Double edge safety razor and Wilkinson sword extreme 3 . I will do abit of research on these and hopefully pick one that I think is the best for me while contemplating H's beard choice 😳. Thanks again 👍

Before you make a decision on a razor, please confirm you don't use any shaving cream that comes out of a can and instead use a brush and a decent product?
If not the razor will always be below average.

Doesn't even get stolen by shop lifters. Can't even remember ever selling one either. Maybe a convenience thing as a more time consuming shave?

I disagree having tired it with both on several occasions to test.
Guess you must be lucky and have some soft hair growth.
I remember using the tinned stuff a few months back and it was zero protection for my face. Absolutely awful stuff IMO.

Shop lifters wouldn't be bright enough to understand what it was used for so would go for cigarettes and booze.

Brush and a proper shaving cream, stick etc is definitely better. The canned stuff is meant to mimic the lather of a proper shaving cream but without having to put in the work. The oil content is too low though so if you have a medium to hard stubble then it won't soften and lift the hair.
It's one of those areas in which convenience has usurped a proper skill that would have been past from father to son in days gone by. Much like 'smart casual' is eliminating the ability to tie a tie, polish shoes or wear a suit properly. That's a whole other discussion though and I'm often in the minority when it comes up so I'll leave it there.

There's no comparison IMO but alluding to PB's last post shaving "properly " takes time rather than a five minute job in the morning. A Palmolive shaving stick used to cost around 90p and do you for ages.

I’ve used both brush and cans ..and both can be great quality imho..the key (for me ) is to leave the lather on your face at least one minute , before starting the shave …

It's the contactless cards that are stolen and used to purchase cigs and booze. Before chip and pin days this was the red flag purchase for a stolen card. We would get a £50 incentive payment for stopping the transaction and removing the card. I once made £150 doing this in a 3 hour shift. One wee guy holding a football under his arm asked for a litre of smirnoff and 200 B&H "please". He looked underage but it was his unusually good manners that alerted my suscpicions.

Shoplifters are not employees, they are independent thieves who enter retail premises and steal goods on display and then sell said item at rule of thumb third of said ticketed price. Hope that clears it up 😀

How often do folk on here shave? I've worked in jobs where I needed to shave every day but currently I just shave once at the start of the week. Didn't shave during the Covid lockdowns so ended up having to buy a beard trimmer before going back to work. I also tend not to shave during school (ie work) holidays. I don't particularly like a full beard but nor do I like shaving every day.

3 times a week for me. Sunday before going back to work on a Monday then a Tuesday and Thursday. Will shave at the weekend if I'm going to a wedding, funeral, birthday party etc but not just for a couple of pints or whatever.
I have a weird growth though. It's not thick but it grows quickly. I shaved on Thursday morning and today I'm sporting something resembling a full (short) beard.

It is the speed of growth that’s the issue for me, though it is worse for me… if I shave in the morning, I could easily shave again at night. I used to shave every day prior to WfH. I’ll generally do every second day unless I have something on, or my wife complains about my facial hair irritating her face… which is generally every night even on shave days.
My head hair grows ridiculously fast too. I got a #2 back and sides on Boxing Day. It was starting to grow over my ears by NYD.

I have a few double edge razors and a mac 3.
Think my favourite is a merkur 38C
Having got a free pack of mac 3's so using them too they are way way better now I use a brush and decent cream.
So the actual razor is no longer an issue for me, infact I used a 50p throw away and managed to get a clean shave which was unheard of a few years back. My stubble/hair is really hard so takes a bit of work.

Started with a brush and cream years ago when I was taught to shave by my Dad. Moved over to a can eventually and have never been disappointed, different for everyone though depending on type of hair.

I think there's a difference between the canned foams and the canned shave gels. I do have a brush but sometimes the creams/soaps cause my skin to break out. At which point I go to a sensitive canned gel for a few days. I think that works fine as you do have to work it in somewhat to get it to foam. I also take it when I'm away or on holiday as well (with a Gillette Fusion razor) rather than packing the brush and DE and it is fine too. I accidentally bought a foam rather than a gel last time and I hate it.
Out of interest what creams/soaps do folk use? I generally use Proraso Sensitive soap or the Body Shop Maca Root cream if I want a bit of luxury. Either Feather or Derby blades
