Unsure which sub-forum to post this so opted for here;
Does anyone here know much about filing information with Companies House, in particular, can a single person hold two roles within a company but be recorded under two similar, but different, names?
I have suspicions about someone potentially taking advantage of a family member in regards to shares, and in doing some digging, I've found they have a few registered companies centred around finance. In one they are both recorded as being secretary & director but their name is recorded first as a full name, then a shortened version (let's say James Smith as Director along with Jim Smith as Secretary).
I know very little about LLPs and suchlike, just wondering if this is of multiple names gives any weight to my concerns?

Happy to help :agree:

CH isn't all that "secure" when it comes to identities. It is entirely possible that some people could be registered as "Jim" with one company and "James" in another.

Sometimes that's just down to preference on the day, or perhaps forgetting that they used a different name last time. I have known people who have done that, entirely innocently.

However, that could also be used for nefarious purposes, which is what you're suggesting. Happy to have a chat on here, or in PM.

A director also being co secretary is permitted.

I'm sure we all love a good bit of intrigue!

..as long as its Mem&Arts allow it.

Recent companies will allow it by default, but perhaps not if it's an older company. (I think, prior to 2006?)

Ah, OK. Would it make a difference if both roles, Director & Secretary were appointed on the same day, by the same person, but with the longhand and shorthand name being used for the different roles?
I'll hold off reaching out to you just now as it's a little delicate, but thanks for the offer 👍🏻
For those looking in and intrigued in the drama, long story short, a Hibs fan & businessman that had a fairly successful career and invested in a lot of companies/shares, has been hit hard with an age related illness so a family member took care of all their financials. After nearly a year, it transpires that he has nowhere near the number of share certificates as expected, even though he was getting decent dividends up until recently.
I'm concerned the family member, who would receive a hefty percentage of any estate via legitimate inheritance, has either lost paperwork, or has "realised" its value.
Financially, we're talking anything between £100K up to £1Mil (the reason for the wide variance is due to the nature of shares, I know for a fact they had at one point £100K invested in a single medical company just before they done very well with a drug released back in '98).
It should be noted I'm not related to either party, not do I have any financial interest here. I just heard the story through an interested party and when I checked out the family member online, I noticed what I thought was a discrepancy.
If it's innocent, then someone has been careless with what was a decent and sizeable portfolio. If there is any foul play, then I don't think we'll know until the estate is wound up.
