Number six on our Hibees advent calendar shines a light on former Hibees; Murdo MacLeod, Marvin Bartley and Ian Murray.

Murdo MacLeod (1990-93)

MacLeod arrived at Easter Road in 1990 at 32 years old to high expectations as the ex-Celtic and Borussia Dortmund midfielder had pedigree at the top level.

It didn’t take long for Murdo to make an impact, captaining Hibernian to League Cup success in 1991. The Scotland international was a firm favourite at Hibs, playing 95 games.

He only scored three goals during his time here, but one of them was of most vital importance: it came in Hibernian’s 3-2 win over Kilmarnock in the 1991 League Cup after Hibs had gone down to ten men.

After leaving Hibernian in 1993, MacLeod went on to become a player coach at Dumbarton.

Ian Murray (1999-05 / 2008-2012)

Over two memorable spells, Ian Murray made 296 appearances in green and white for the Hibees.

Ian joined the Hibees from Dundee United in 1999 as an 18-year-old and made his debut at the turn of the year.

Known for his versatility, Murray began playing as a central defender alongside Gary Caldwell, where he was appointed captain. When he returned to the club in 2008, he found himself more at left-back, but rare cameos in midfield highlighted how useful of a player Ian could be.

After leaving Hibs in 2012, Murray headed to America before returning to trial for Brechin City. He is currently the Manager of Raith Rovers in the Scottish Championship.

Marvin Bartley (2015-2019)

Excellent form at Leyton Orient brought Marvin Bartley to Hibernian in 2015, where the combative midfield player played his part in the lead-up to the Hibees’ 2016 Scottish Cup win.

With 124 appearances to his name, Bartley stayed at the Club when we dropped into the second tier of Scottish football and played a vital role in bouncing back to win the Scottish Championship in 2017.

Since retiring from playing, Bartley has gone on to become the Assistant Manager at fellow Scottish Premiership side Livingston.

Remember listening to the radio Scotland were playing in South America and Sloop was in the squad. The team were doing a warm up and Sloop was running through all his party pieces keepie uppies etc. He received a standing ovation from the South American fans.
He never seemed to break sweat during a game.

Posted on another thread I used to make a point of getting to the ground early to watch Sloop going through his prematch routine keepie uppie holding the ball on his instep and flicking it up onto the back of his heid

He also had a tradition of being last man out with a ball in his hand that he would boot into the empty net

Met him in the bogs at the Tornadoes event at the Festival think he thought I was a mad stalker :greengrin
