Number five on our Hibees advent calendar includes three different cup-winners; Jim Black, Rob Jones and Liam Fontaine!

Jim Black (1969 – 74)

Nicknamed “Cilla”, Jim joined the Club from Airdrie in 1969 and was a key part of a strong defence that went on to win the Scottish League Cup in 1972 and the Drybrough Cup in 1972 and 1973.

He was a regular name on the teamsheet for Eddie Turnbull’s Tornadoes and started all 58 matches (all competitions) during the famous 1972/73 season.

In over 200 games for the Club, his only goal came against Keflavik in the UEFA Cup.

Jim (pictured below right) left the Club to rejoin Airdrie in 1974 before moving on to finish his playing career at Stenhousemuir – a club where he later managed.

Rob Jones (2006 – 09)

A colossal defender and a born leader, Rob Jones was a player for the big games who also had an eye for goal.

A Hibees fan favourite; Rob Jones captained the Club to their first piece of silverware in 16 years – winning the League Cup in 2007.

Jones was a standout performer in that Hibs cup-winning team, scoring in three out of the five rounds – including the opening goal in the 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the final.

The Hibs centre-half went on to make 118 appearances in green and white scoring 13 times before joining Scunthorpe United in 2009.

Liam Fontaine (2014 – 18)

Fontaine joined the Hibees in August 2014 on a permanent transfer from English Championship side Bristol City.

The strong centre-half made 100 appearances during his time with the Club and captained the Hibees on nine occasions.

The Hibs no.5 enjoyed a successful spell at the Club, winning the Scottish Cup Final in 2016 – starting at centre-back alongside Paul Hanlon and Darren McGregor.

The following season, Fontaine helped the Club secure promotion back to the Scottish top flight in 2017 before suffering an injury in July 2017 which turned out to be his last game for the Hibees, joining Ross County in January 2018.

Cilla was probably the least 'glamorous' of the Tornadoes, I doubt he was anyone's favourite, but don't dare say that to any of the Tornadoes who to a man appreciated his crucial role in that team.

Remember he caused a sensation on Sportsnight With Coleman with his marauding runs from his own box through the centre of the Leeds United defence at Elland Road and was hailed as the first overlapping Centre Half
