In the lead-up to Christmas, we are shining a light on Hibs players (past and present) to wear the numbers 1-25! Up next, number three; Erich Schaedler, David Murphy and Liam Henderson!

Erich Schaedler (1969-78 / 1981-85)

Erich, the son of a German prisoner of war, signed for Hibernian from Stirling Albion in 1969.

A fitness fanatic and immensely strong, Erich was adored by Hibernian fans and was part of the infamous Turnbull’s Tornadoes team that won the League Cup in 1972 and beat Hearts 0-7 at Tynecastle on New Year’s Day 1973.

Erich went on to make 434 appearances for Hibs – across two separate spells – and scored five goals from left-back.

Erich was capped for Scotland in a friendly against West Germany and was included in Willie Ormond’s World Cup squad in 1974.

David Murphy (2004-08)

David Murphy signed for Hibs in the Summer of 2004 under Tony Mowbray.

An incredibly consistent full-back with a cool head and a great engine, David Murphy spent three and a half years with the Hibees before leaving to join Birmingham City in January 2008.

He was part of the side that won the Scottish League Cup in 2007 and made 134 appearances in green and white.

During his time with the Club, he scored seven goals – including the winning goal at Ibrox against Rangers in a 1-0 victory to send Hibs top of the table back in October 2007.

Liam Henderson (2015-16)

"It's Liam Henderson to deliver..."

Ian Crocker's famous commentary line will live long in the memory of all Hibernian supporters. After coming on as a second half substitute in the 2016 Scottish Cup Final with 20 minutes to play, Liam Henderson certainly made his impact.

He set up Anthony Stokes' equaliser 10 minutes from time before famously delivering that corner for David Gray to nod home in stoppage time - sparking wild scenes as Hibs went on to lift the Scottish Cup for the first time in 114 years.

Liam only spent a year with the Hibees (on a season-long loan from Celtic) but he was ever present within the squad - making 48 appearances in all competitions and registering six goals and 16 assists.

One of the classiest players not only as a no 3 but as a player was John Parke.

Hibs acquired him from Linfield in 1963 and it was clear from his first appearance that with the qualities he had his stay at ER would not be a long one.It was therefore no surprise that Hibs sold him to Sunderland in 1964.

Up until David Murphy. appeared at ER Parke was in my all time favourite Hibs team as No 3.

Never saw him play but my auld boy spoke highly of John Parke

Special mention for David Murphy’s sublime first touch could pull a ball out of the air and kill it stone dead with his trusty left peg

My all time fav is Erich Schaedler Man of Steel

Not the most gifted player but super fit, hard as nails, fast speedy recovery, immense long throw and would run through a brick wall for the cabbage

I could be wrong but would it be fair to say that left back has not been our strongest position on past Hibernian greats?

Being born in 86 off the top of my head I grew up on super joe, Graham Love? Andy Dow, Jimmy Boco, Paul lovering.

Murphy was a very good player for us and Lewis ended up seeing off many of duds.

Up to you Oscar 😃
