The greatest player ever, IMO, nears the end.

My friend who passed with cancer said to me on his deathbed…
‘The only good thing about cancer, is all the morphine they give you’.
Hopefully Pèle is being well looked after and is lying back thinking about his amazing life with a big smile on his face.

A player I truly regret not having an opportunity to see play. From the clips I've seen of him, from the tales I've heard from other players of that era, he definitely merits all of his accolades. Not just his on-field achievements, but his role in expanding football access and reducing corruption in Brazilian football.

Absolutely. I remember Alex Ferguson talking in the documentary made after his brain haemorrhage, about the panic that he felt that he could lose his memories. And what memories to have.

82 is a decent kick of the baw and if Pele is able to peacefully reflect on all of the amazing things that he has achieved in his last days - never mind the amount change in the world he’ll have seen since 1940 - that’s not too bad at all.

Furthermore, the outpouring of concern will also leave him in no doubt as to just how much of a legend he is. That sounds like a decent way to check out.

Really enjoyed that, thanks. Made me realise some of my lazy assumptions. That Pele was ahead of his time but probably not up there with Messi or Maradonna technically, and that defenders weren’t up to much back then. Maybe an element of that, but countered with the heavy balls and pitches. Don’t think I’ve done Pele justice how good he was technically.
