In all my time of watching Hibs I don't think I can remember a significant period of consistency, it usually hovers between average and worse, this time it is not different.

I was told when I was young that the only consistent thing is our inconsistency.

Can Hibs ever be consistent, we can't hold on to a manager or players even if they are decent, we seem to replace like for like, we don't have the spending power to be much better than the rest.

This is kind of where its at now. Long gone are the days when you could hold onto a decent team and build on it and that goes for 90% of clubs in the world, not just us.

That doesn't mean we can't aim for a period of years where we are challenging for cups and top 4 on a regular basis, we still have the potential to sign better players than most of the league, but in order to do that we need to be smart in the transfer market and that's something we have generally failed to do. Our young teams are showing real promise, but bitter experience does not support any theory that we will see another 'golden generation' like we did in the 2000's.

We live in hope though :greengrin

In any sport , golf, horse racing, football.... consistency is always the big dividing factor between the great and the rest. Anybody can have a good day

Hibs are in an unfortunate position. We are not big enough to compete with the Twin Freaks for the league and CL places (and most of the cups). This means we are invariably trying to "win" 3rd place and a spot in the Europa/Conf league. That's not a huge incentive for an ambitious player or manager.

On the flip side, all those so called "smaller clubs" with less money (Motherwell, St J, DUFC etc) are able to shoot for the same prizes from time to time on much smaller budgets. Beating Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen to Euro spots or top 6 is a huge deal for them.

In summary, the nature of the SPFL puts Hibs in the worst position of being unable to beat the OF for the league (ever) but left with lots of other snapping at our heels for the lesser prizes.

Or flip that and say we are one of the biggest clubs in the country and should be challenging for cups and European spots every single season.

I'd not call that a negative situation, quite the opposite infact, we've just pretty much never took advantage of that situation.
